This isn't exactly POPculture, but it's Japanese culture. I think.

What does it mean when a Japanese man, whether soldier or not is buried with a katana (whether it is his or not) before, during or after WWII until present? emo

Well, here's the situation. The man is not cremated (I don't know why) and TWO swords are buried with him (I just found this out) and put it in the coffin with him. The first was a katana, scabbard and everything, like that of WWII Japanese Officer's swords, and the other was smaller...I don't know, but I think it was a mamori-gatana. I mean, it looked like a samurai sword to me, but I thought it was too short. eek

I appreciate all the input 4laugh

Well im guessing if that man was buried with his daisho (most common set of just a Katana and Wakizashi) was most likely from a family who was still devoted deeply in the old ways. Or maybe he was last in the family line.im not too sure....

oorrr..he asked to be buried with it?

Last family in line? Wow. Very interesting! This only applies to pure Japanese, right? Arigato! This has been very intriguing indeed...
