In the year 2528, humanity had reached a point where robots had taken over most functions that humans previously needed to. Humanity was looking into populating the other planets and the moon colony had expanded to a point where there was no more viable room. To compensate, humans had started digging down, creating whole cities under cities, expanding and building under what couldn't be built on. There were even massive underwater colonies.
Then the robot war happened. The AI technology brought out by the worlds leaders, the then Americans, expanded to such a point where the robots broke their programming. They started destroying everything, forcing humanity underground.
Abandoning the cities which the robots had taken over, humans learnt to survive in smaller communities, scattered over many levels of the underground.
A small group of people, freedom fighters, formed in one of these many communities. Their vision was to defeat the enemy robots.

Ray aimed his rifle down the firing range.
"I'll give you a case of grog if you can land the next shot on the dummies right index finger."
The speaker grinned at Ray as the 5 foot 10 man turned his head and stared at him for a moment with his grey-brown eyes. His dark brown hair was cropped short with one ponytail sprouting from the base of his skull. His battered ballistic armour was a perfect fit over the trim body.
"Two cases and I'll shoot both index fingers off."
The other man laughed. "If you fail you owe me two."
"Deal, " Ray said as he turned back to the target. He took a quick aim, fired, adjusted and fired again. The other man glanced past him and started laughing.
"I guess I owe you two cases of hooch."
Ray grinned at the man, patted him on the shoulder and left the shooting range, leaning his rifle against his shoulder. He tapped a small button on one of his two gauntlets.
"Base, anything happening?"

"Absolutely nothing, Rayray. It looks to be a boring day."
Mustang grinned, removing his forefinger from the intercom button. He stuffed a sandwich into his mouth, a twinkle of amusement in his blue eyes. He shrugged his shoulders, relieving built up tension in the back of his neck, and flexed his fingers before taking his magnums ((*Eats icecream*)) out to clean them. Moments later he returned the pistols to their holsters at his hips, taking the time to shout a few choice words at the sight of grease on his red coat. "Damnit! This is my favourite one too!" Mustang stood up, taking off his floorlength coat to reveal a blue vest and black jeans.

ooc~ -is forced to join- No, I won't!! ^^ bic~ Azure was stretched out on a couch in the lounge, polishing the staff like weapon on her lap. It was a dark ebony color with curved blades at either end. On either end there was also a firing hole where laser shots could be fired when a certain pressure point was touched. It was a weapon of her own invention, something she called a Lazstaff. It was about 7 feet tall and heavy, but she could wield it as if it was merely a stick. Azure threw down the polishing rag to watch the news, running a hand through her black hair, the same color as the Lazstaff. Most of the news these days was about celebrities dying underground, or hidden cameras watching as the robots destroyed whole cities and wildlife. Finally, Azure had to turn it off, dark eyes closing. She wore a black, skintight jumpsuit that was fireproof and prevented most bullets from entering her skin, except for at close range and black boots to match. Her only other weapon besides the Lazstaff was a small black gun tucked into the holster at her hip. I was small, but very effective. She was one of the only woman on the freedom fighters squad here, for there weren't many woman who could wield a gun affectively or any other weapon, and sometimes the presence of constant men eyeing her up and down got aggravating. She was pretty, not overwhelmingly so, but with a beautiful smile that hardly ever showed up nowadays. Restless, she got up and paced the room with the staff still laying on the couch. There hadn't been much action from the robots which could only mean one thing: They were planning something.

Meanwhile, a mass attack on the newest-dug city was coming to an end. Having destroyed everything and everyone in sight, the relentless robots moved up through the upper cities to head back to their base of command. As the loud, deep thuds of their gigantic steps starting fading away, the girl new it was safe to crawl out from the library remains that she had been taking refuge in. This library had been attacked last week, the robots weren’t going to attack it again. All they had left of it last time was a wall, some big piles of bricks and lots of ashes and remains of books. She stood up, trembling and looked in the direction of the robots; they were almost completely out of sight. She started running through the city to where her home used to stand. She didn’t know what she’d find there, if her family was alive. As she ran, she hoped that her mum and younger sister had made it to the shelter that the freedom fighters had constructed to help protect the lives they were fighting for. At the end of this street she’d have to turn left, and when she did the sight that greeted her made her stop dead in her tracks.

"I'm heading on my scouting run Mustang. Send anyone else along who's not too busy with anything."
Ray shouldered his rifle and started jogging towards the nearest ladder up towards the surface.

Mustang nodded to the disembodied voice, then flicked a switch to broadcast to all frequencies in the area. "Rayray is going scouting. Anybody bored enough to put up with his small talk is invited for the fun." Smiling quietly to himself, Mustang went to a supply closet behind his transmission desk, taking out a red coat duplicate to the one he'd stained, throwing the old one in a green basket nearby. It would be obvious to any observer that Mustang spilled substances on his clothing regularly.

Azure almost jumped when her radio frequency picked up Mustang. "Rayray is going scouting. Anybody bored enough to put up with his small talk is invited for the fun." She sighed. Ray's talking was better than doing nothing. Then she snickered. Rayray? She would tease him about that. She shouldered her Lazstaff and climbed carefully up to the surface, closing the hatch behind her. She glanced around, but the only moving thing she saw was Ray, so she relaxed...somewhat. "They're up to something," she whispered, just loud enough so he could hear as she walked towards him.

"That's because they're always up to something," Ray replied in a normal voice. They were well underground and past too many solid walls to care too much about voices carrying. For the moment.
"Lets get to Gamma quadrant. We can replace whoever is on there. And remember your heat displacers." Ray pointed to a button on one of his gauntlets before pressing it and fast walking down a corridor.

"What do you think I am, a new recruit?" she asked with a raised eyebrow before rolling his eyes and jogging slowly after him, keeping a good watch for anything unusual. "And what I meant was that this time...it's really big. No activity for almost a week? Too weird to just let go."

Seating himself once more, Mustang crossed his legs and rested them on his desk. A bell rang quietly a moment later, signalling the passing of another hour. "Oh goody, something to do. Time for the hourly status reports." He flicked several switches on his communications switchboard and sent the 'info update' request code to each quadrant. Mustang then pivoted in his chair, stopping to look at a display monitor now directly in front of him.
For several seconds, the screen remained blank, but sections of the screen soon lit up, indicating the area's status. Frowning at Epsilon Quadrant's yellow status light, Mustang touched that section of the screen, bringing up a report. "Oh, how interesting. Selma found a fluffy white rabbit. Not worth a yellow status light, but nice all the same." He went back to the prior screen, and noticed something out of place. "Wait. Where's Gamma Quadrant's status? It's blank." Mustang sent the request code once more to Gamma Quadrant, and immediately swore as he rushed to activate all broadc ast frequencies. "No status response from Gamma Quadrant. My guess is the machines aren't trying to be quiet anymore. Anyone who can should go investigate or at least keep a very cautious lookout for suspicious activity. Oh, and Rayray?" he continued, still broadcasting on all frequencies, "I'll rendezvous with you in a few minutes, if you'd be kind enough to slow down just a little." Ensuring that he had spare ammunition, Mustang activated his remote network radio, allowing him to retain his communications uplink to anyone in need, and ran out the door. He wasn't as strong or as good a shot as Ray, but he could definitely boast about his better agility, and agility was all Mustang needed to be efficient in battle.

Azure listened intently to the broadcast from Mustang and flicked on her Lazstaff. It seemed to blaze with light for a moment, then dimmed back to normal. "I'll go check out Gamma Quadrant. Remain in touch in case I need backup," she said to Ray and into her microphone before disappearing off between the buildings. A few minutes later, she was in the Gamma Quadrant, hiding behind a rather large building and listening for any activity. The only sound she heard was a faint moaning, and when she peeked around the side of the building a bloody scene laid itself out before her. Pieces of robots or robots that were shut off now lay, silent and unmoving among a pool a blood that didn't come from them, but five humans strewn around the courtyard. Azure looked away, then stepped out, sending out a scanner for movement or life. All the humans were dead, she knew that now. They had died like fighters though, although they were hopelessly mangled and almost inrecognizable. She picked her way among the graveyard, questions running through her mind. Why hadn't anyone been alerted when these five were attacked? Where were the robots now? Suddenly, her scanner gave a faint beep and she looked down to see the pale face of her good friend Liz among a mess of blood and mangled body parts. She bit back tears and bile and knelt down. Liz was breathing faintly, but Azure knew it was too late. The fighter's eyes suddenly snapped open and she gripped Azure's arm before she could react. "They...are getting...stronger," Liz whispered fiercely, her eyes seeming to dim. She coughed up blood, then continued faintly. "They...disabled our...radios before they attacked...so we couldn't call...for help. It was a mas...massacre...They...attacked without warning and fiercely. We...fought as...best we could...but without contact...we knew we just had...to take out as many ....as we could...before we left. Azure...warn...everyone that...the robots are..." she paused to cough, more violently this time as Azure held her and tears fell from her face. "massing...for an attack..." Suddenly, Liz gave a great heaving sigh and her body when limp. The scanner went silent and Azure howled her grief, not caring if anyone heard. For awhile she sat and held the corpse of her friend, tears running down her face. Then her resolve hardened and she stood, covered in her friend's blood and picking up her equipment. "Mustang, there's been...there's been..." Azure started speaking into the microphone, but found she couldn't say it. The tears fell silently. "You'd better come down here...but if blood makes you queasy then don't."

Ray ran after Azure after a moment and caught up to her as she finished talking to Mustang. He hauled her to her feet and moved into the closest building, dragging her with him.
"Keep it down," he hissed through his teeth. "There might be more robots out there. And you are like a rookie running off. Don't do it again. You could have gotten us both killed."
He fell silent has he heard something crash in the distance. He quickly pressed two buttons on his gauntlets. The first was his heat dispersers and the second was a limited energy shield, good for only a couple of hits. Slipping the rifle off his shoulder, he poked his head round the corner of the door and looked towards the noise.
"Base, we have a small squad of hunter robots, bearing down on my position, gamma quadrant, section 4. Advise all available weapons to sections 3, 5, 9 and 12 asap. Repeat, a group of hunters. Out."
Now, normally robots were fairly easy to take out. That was, except the hunters. Gently placing his rifle against the wall, he pushed another button on his right gauntlet and a small barrel came out the side. Pulling an odd shaped pistol from his belt, he held it in his left hand and pressed a small button on the side of it. A series of small, dull lights appeared on the side, all green before fading away.
"Azure, get your plasma pistol out and get ready to over-charge it. We'll use it like a grenade. Hopefully we can take out a few of them."
Ray started praying under his breath.

Azure was so numb with pain and shock that she could only obey. She'd tell them later what Liz had said. Right now, those hunters were going down. "I've got a better idea," she said, taking a small coin-sized object from her pocket, though her voice was flat and monotone. Her tears were gone, replaced by a hard resolve and anger. "This is much more effective. My own invention. Right before you throw it, squeeze the center. You'll see what happens." Azure pressed the shiny object into his hand, her eyes cold and steely. "But you can't goddamn well tell me that you feel nothing right now about the scene out there."
