My cats keep killing mice mothers, even though we tryed many, humane things to try and limit there killings, but there insticts to kill the mice are too strong. i love mice so i always take in the orphaned babys and i try finding a rehibilitation center that would take mice, but there are none in RI that i have found. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to feed them( a recipe for some sort of mouse formula would be nice), and any information about orpaned mice care would be helpful. Manly feild mice and Woodland Jumping Mice, but any mice info is apreciated. Thanks to all that help... heart

Feeding:

Baby mice are pink and look like little fetuses. (sp?)

If their eyes are open, they are BAR (bright alert responsive) it is best to leave them alone.

Pink babies have transluescent skin. You can acctually see their stomachs, which appear as a little white blotch when their bellies are full (milk bellies).

If the babies have a milk belly, they should be left by the nest. If they do not then you should intervien.

Tools:
Eyedropper
powdered mothers milk replacer
tepid water

Make a weaker concoction of the mothers milk replacer, (you don't want it too strong) and carefully feed the baby mouse till they get a milk belly. Feeding should happen every two hours to 1/2 hour. Or until you see the milk belly receading.

Urinating and Deficating

Baby mice cannot urinate of deficate on their own.

Tools:
Baby oil (sensitive)
your finger, if you're smart a towel if your afraid of alittle mouse pee

Carefuilly take a Q-tip and rub the baby oil on the genitalia. This will make the rubbing easier on the baby and creat less chafing. Take your finger and rub the genitalia and a**s until they urinate and deficate. They may squeak, but thats only natural.
Repeat every 1/2 hour to hour.

Also:

Keep the babies nearby. They need your warmth.

When I say every 1/2 hour to two hours, I mean all through the night. Do not be upset if your efforts to save the baby are futile. And remember that the baby, once raised by you will never be able to go back in the wild. They will have wild traits, like hissing and aggressive behavior.

Good Luck.

Wow, extremely useful information, silver. Do you happen to take care of mice often or run a wildlife rehab of sorts?

>< Oh, er I raised rats and mice when I was 13 and 14.

I also worked at a vet office and nature center, while my mom worked at the mystic aquarium. So I had a broad range of books that I dove into before all my oppotunities left (ie. my mom doesn't work anymore and I haven't returned to the nature center.)

I also go to an Agricultural School so I'm constantly asked questions like that~ Mainly I thank the books.
