 Such a strange place....
Gray ears perked up while soft, silver eyes glanced about. Hard, dead rock lay underneath a hyena pup's feet, dead plants all around, and bones, scattered everywhere. The skies that were once a spring blue were now dark, evil seeming to fill the air surrounding this place. It was also rather quiet, so quiet that it was scary.
With gray ears falling back and a gray tail quivering in between two gray hind legs, this small and frightened animal padded about, not knowing which direction to go, or even which direction she had come from. This small, female hyena pup, who wasn't much of a pup, but more of a juvenile, had somehow lost her way.... Into the most feared place throughout the lands that she lived in.
The Elephant Graveyard.... A place that was once used for exiles and death... And was now the home of many, vicious hyenas, seeking out revenge for all their lost ancestors, killed off and shunned by lions. While this particular hyena pup did not know of this place's terrorizing past or the hyenas that roamed throughout it, she did know that she was not welcomed here. After all, she lived around lions, and accepted them with open paws. Once these beasts found out about her kind nature towards lions, she was sure she'd be killed.... No matter what she said or did... Or even if she was a hyena herself.

Neus stalked carefully through the bare skeletons and dead plants, his pawfalls silent on the hard ground. He had to learn to be silent, no matter how much his back leg refused to cooperate. He HAD to help the pack and learn to hunt, scout, and defend. How to defeat the enemy.
His hackles rose at the thought of lions. Instinctively he lifted his nose to the air and sniffed. Rather than catching the scent of big cat, he picked up the scent of a hyena. One he'd never smelled before.
Along with it, he caught the scent of fear.
Strange. Maybe this newling was in trouble! Maybe a lion was chasing this hyena, and (she? he?) needed help! Maybe HE could help. Neus forgot about the need to be quiet and began to stumble clumsily forwards. His back leg dragged painfully over bones and across rocks - he swore and continued forwards.
Damn lions. They would pay!

Whimpering, the female juve stalked around some more, her silver eyes looking left and right continuously. Her ears were still flat to her head and her tail was still quivering in between in hind legs. As she stepped on a bone and heard it crack beneath her paws, she jumped suddenly, starting to run now. Tons of bones snapped and popped as she eagerly ran, her eyes filled with fear and her breath trembling.
"Oh.. Where do I go..? Where am I..? Where's home...? Someone... Help me....", she whined, tears starting to form in her eyes.

Something grey and white streaked past him, tail tucked and grey eyes wide. Whaaa? Neus spun and set off after the other as fast as he could. He kept one ear pinned back, listening for anything approaching from behind.
"... Is someone after you, or are you just lost?" Neus shook his head. As far as HE could tell, she was alone. So she was just lost then. Nothing to get all freaked out about! Man, he should offer to be a guide for the graveyard.
"I can help, you know!" He shouted after her.

Stopping suddenly as she heard the voice call out to her, her silver eyes looked around, eager to find who is was. After all, they had just offered help to her, and she was more than happy to take any help that she could get in this awful place!
"Who's there? I want help.. But I don't want to go with someone that I can't see.. Please.. Come out to where I can see you...", she whined some more, not as scared as she was just a second ago.

"Tss, princess, turn around! I'm right here."
A hyena, and a young female at that. He snorted and stepped out into the light. Unconsciously he held his backleg stiff, trying to hide the crippled limp. Neus cocked an eyebrow and canted his head, eyeing the female.
"What's wrong? I don't smell anyone else around here. No lions."
What else was there to be afraid of here, anyways? She was, after all, another hyena. No one was gonna hurt her! ... well, not at first, anyways.

Turning her head slightly and seeing a young, male hyena step out from the shadows, the female almost yelped with both fear and joy. His sudden appearance had startled her, but at the same time, she was overjoyed to finally see who had been talking to her.
"What's wrong? Well.. I don't know where I am... And I don't know anyone around here. I'm scared... And lost... And away from the comfort of my home....."

That was IT? That was nothing. Neus snorted and sat back on his haunches. One paw raised to scratch lazily at at his neck. Geesh. Where was she from, anyways? The comfort of home, HA!
The only comfort he found at home was a slight sense of safety. Even that was in question at times though...
"So you're lost. Alright. Which way did you come from? Just go back." Neus shrugged one shoulder and watched her out of narrowed grey-green eyes. Silly child. He ignored the fact that she looked to be about the same age as him.
"If you're lost, get UN-lost."
He didn't elaborate; it was simple enough!

"But... But.. I don't know HOW to get UN-lost! I don't even know which way I came from. Every direction I turn, everything looks the same! How in the world am I supposed to get back home to my family, my friends, and all the lions? I don't know where to go."
She had only continued to whine, which really wasn't her style. However, she had to get the point across to him somehow, and if making a complete idiot of herself was the only way, then she'd do it.
"What's your name, anyhow? You're quite rude to poor little hyenas who can't find their way anymore... So grumpy. Why can't you be happy and free-spirited, like other hyenas?", she snorted, trying to get him to talk, not being so worried anymore.

"Tss, princess, you just turn around. You came from -that- way, right?" The pup waved one paw carelessly. "The go BACK that way."
Duh. He eyed her and flicked his tail. Lions, huh? She was one of -those- hyenas! He would never deal with them. She might be his own kind, and he would point her in the right direction because of it. But anything else...
Forget it. He could practically smell the reek of lion on her fur.
"Neus, not that it matters." He grinned at her. "And I'm not 'grumpy', and I have no requirement to help you either. If you don't want to get lost, you shouldn't wander. And I've never met free-spirited hyenas, girl."
Free-spirited? That was just another word for weak.

Wait.. Was he making fun of her? Sure, she lived around lions, and she liked a lot of them, especially the lion cubs, but that was no reason to shun her away, was it? Of course, with her not knowing of this place's horrible past, she didn't know just what type of trouble she was bound to get in.
"Hmmm.. Neus.. I like that name. Still though, you are grumpy. And what do you mean you've never met a free-spirited hyena? They're everywhere! Aren't -you- one? I know I am!"
She was quite proud of it too. Now, she was determined to make this hyena juve understand her. Forget about going home. Someone needed her help with becoming a free-spirited hyena!
"So... Since you seem to not like me.. How can I like you? What are you like?"

"I don't really care if you like me -or- my name."
Ugh. The more he stood here next to her, the stronger the smell of lion seemed to grow. Maybe if he humored her... just maybe she would leave him alone and in peace.
"What am I like?" He barked out a harsh laugh, but his eyes remained cold. "You could tell me better than I can tell you, girl." What kind of question was that anyways? Psh.
Neus leveled a stare at her, a warning or a challenge, and then turned and started picking his way back through the bones. Lion-lovers could take care of themselves. "The borders are that way, along this path. Follow it quickly and get out of here while you can. No one will bother you."
Well, he didn't think they would. And if they did... that was their perrogative. And HER problem, not his. Neus didn't glance back to see if she was following or not.

Instantly, her black-toed paws began to follow his white-toed ones, not understanding why he was begin so rude, crude, and just plain mean to her in general. What had she done to him to deserve this sort of treatment? Nothing. Nothing at all. Right?
"I don't want to go home now.. I want to stay, here, in this... Very.. Weird.. Place. Please, don't leave me behind. I don't think the other hyenas here would be so kind to just let me walk through...."
She knew it was probably true too. If this one hyena was grumpy and snarly, then all the others around here probably were too, unfortunately. It was so... Harsh.. To be so mean.
"Neus! Please?", she whined, jumping when she stepped on a bone and it snapped beneath her paws. She definitely hadn't been prepared for that.

Neus scowled. He was supposed to be hunting. Mafa wouldn't appreciate him dragging home a lion-loving tag-a-long. But she was a hyena, after all. He couldn't just abandon her out here.
"Fine." He cast a half amused, half irritated glance over his shoulder. "If this place is so weird, why'd you wanna stay, anyways?"
He didn't think it was weird. It was the only place he'd ever belong! Probably the only place he'd ever survive, with THIS leg. The hyena snorted and flicked his ears forwards, ignoring Kia's annoying whining.
"'Sides, no one likes a Hyena who lives with lions." Neus sneered at the thought.

Kai quickly growled at the bone that had snapped under her foot, and then ran to catch back up to Neus. Since when did bones just jump out in front of you anyhow and scare you like that?
"Hey... I don't exactly live with lions. I just know a few, and they're pretty nice, except this one that keeps trying to eat me every time I go to see her with Mother.." She shuddered at the thought of a lime green lioness with her mouth open, full of pearly white teeth, just wanting to snap her in two. "Plus, I want to stay here because you're here! You seem.. Well.. Kinda nice.. And if I want to make a friend with someone, I have to stay around them for awhile. Of course, I have to go before it gets dark, but I can always come back to play!"
This little female had no idea that she could of very well just offended the little male pup. She didn't realize what a hard life it seemed he led, and fro her own experiences, everything was fun and like a big game. When would she ever grow up out of her childish state?
