Sometimes I get these overwhelming urges to cut myself. The thing is, I take medication and mostly over my depression. It comes in little doses, usually at night when I think about my dad and how he didn't really treat me right. I know it's a horrible habit, but I heard it makes you feel secure and/or calm, and that's all I want to feel sometimes. Help?

If you ever have like hair-ties or those funny stretchy bracelets to put around your wrists snap those. Even if you can find a hair tie or something, rubber bands work as well. Hurts a good bit, and even in the middle of class if you feel kind of nervy you can do it since its not as obvious. My girlfriend said she did it for awhile. Hasnt cut at all. I did it to a while before, but I completely forgot ^.^;;

Ah yes, my friends new year resolution last year was to stop cutting, and that's how she did it. With those rubber band thingies, very good idea. Now she is better, she still gets down on those bad weekdays, but doesnt everyone?

the reason I used to cut (and it took me years to figure this out) was that I hurt on the inside but I couln't rationalize that pain, so I brought it to the outside. course I ended up focusing my anger on that insted and it only hurt more and in the end the original pain that started me cutting came back. so it didn't solve anything. it provides a distraction, so finding a list of things that helps you distract yourself in that sort of time works. If it's at night and I can't take it I try for a sleep aid and then let that put me to sleep. if it's during the day I might try to hang out with my friends, watch a movie, or do somthing else. then I also find someone to talk to. I've had some of the best counclaers anyone could ever ask for.
