Yay! First thread! whee

Recently, the media and the world have taken the responsibility to encouraging being thin, just as long as every bone in your body isn't showing. I'm not sure what happened when I wasn't watching, but apparently if you're fat, you're nothing. You're automatically ugly, you're automatically social outcast.

I mean, even clothing stores are promoting being thin, like Abercrombie and such as. I'm just wondering, what happened to the world? I mean, you can't even have a beautiful face just because you're overweight. How does that stop you from being beautiful?

I've been teased for being fat all my life, and lately it's just gotten worse. These girls at school have decided to tease me because I'm fat calling me "thunder thighs" and such. I never even spoken to them before and didn't even know their names till then. rolleyes They stopped once I got them all detention. But I still feel like I'm 'thunder thighs'.

What are your experinces? Have you become a victim of this ideal of beauty? Have you noticed that it's just getting worse, or does it seem the same to you?

congrats on the first thread ^_^

all i can say about those girls is ******** them.

i've been in the same boat as you. i was taunted and teased my entire life because i've always been the "chubby" kid. as we got older, the teasing got worse, and so did my eating habits. i went from "chubby" to "fat" in no time flat. i spent nearly 5 years of my school life like this; getting teased and reaching to food for comfort.

once i hit sixth grade though, i just became mean. after all those years of being teased, i was the one doing the teasing. i was (and still am) a b***h. i've always been an observer. when most think i'm not paying attention, i'm watching and listening to whats going on. i always had so much dirt on them, and i knew how to use it to my advantage. they'd say something about me and i'd retort with something much worse.

i've reduced a girl to tears on more than one occasion. i've never hit anyone who hadnt hit me first. i've never started anything. i've just defended myself my entire life; sheilding myself from being hurt.

so i may now have the reputation of "b***h" under my belt... but it helps with the taunting. people are careful around me. they know that i fly off the handle easily when they begin talking about my weight. because really... none of those bitches took the time to get to know me, to find out my flaws to use against me. i know i'm gorgeous, and they know i'm gorgeous. theres really nothing they can say about me any more.

and as for the media? ******** that too. you're pretty, and dont let anyone tell you otherwise. dont let the media control how you veiw yourself either.

the media is not gonna change whats "hot" and whats "not" anytime soon. fat is a "not" right now, and it probably will be for a long time. the most us big girls can do to feel good about ourselves is to stop veiwing everything about us so badly, and join things like this, where we are appreciated.

I've seen LOTS of pretty girls who are larger than the norm.

I think the problem is that alot of girls think that they're ugly because of it, and that reflects in the way they look and it actually DOES make them less attractive.

Confidence is always sexy, and if you wear clothes that compliment your size and show off the good parts, then you look great. But if you stick with not trying and just having a pity party, then yeah, you might not look your best.

And my boyfriend is pretty chubby and he somehow can get stuff at stores like AE and Areopostale, so I know larger sizes at that store do exist, at least in the guy's department.

Yeah, some girls probably do have their feelings of self-hated and feeling ugly rub off in their appearance, but it doesn't necessarily help if they're always being name called and picked on for majority of their life. That sure doesn't boost self confidence.

I can fit into some of AE and definitely Aeropostale. But for males, everything is bigger usually for their body type so I've heard. Still some of the clothing lines related to that promote being thin.

How old is everybody else here? Am I just the old woman of the group?

Honestly, this is nothing new... this has been going on for years. I actually notice more that the media is trying to show how hard it is to be an overweight person in our society.

Clothing stores have always been too small. I can't wear Victoria's Secret 'cause they don't make 40Ds except in one bra... I want the Pink bras, damnit! Not that they'd offer me enough support, anyways. I can't even dream of wearing Abercrombie or Holister or anything like that. More and more companies are putting out larger sizes for juniors, or having whole sections devoted to plus-sized juniors.

Elementary through Highschool are just generally more unpleasant times for fat people, although I noticed when I was in Highschool it wasn't so bad for me anymore... But it's when I realized I'm actually attractive (circa around college... year 2004) that I started getting boyfriends, nobody insults me for my weight anymore, nobody says I'm ugly unless they're jealous.

So yeah, I don't really see it getting worse, only better.

Also, yeah... stores make larger sizes for guys because it's more acceptable to be an overweight male than it is to be an overweight female...

Dollface, I too have been in the GD for too long. I hate it when almost every single thread turns into a rag on larger people. xp As for the style of clothes with the "thin" encouragement, I feel your pain and also express my distaste. ESPECIALLY if the alleged size of the average woman is 16...(I think. or is it 14?) Yeah...I have been a victim...heh. Not anymore, though..thanks to stores like Cato, Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug and bum bum bummmmm even Wal-Mart.
Taunting and teasing? You betcha. I've been fat since the age of 7. When WASN'T I the butt of a joke or a prank? Funny...didn't really have too much said to my face until I got around OLDER people. eek
I do in fact feel like things are getting far worse. People ragging on bigger people for whining, society being very two-faced (accepting us, then turning around and saying thin is in)..just...ugh. It's almost like we need a safe haven and heavy armor to face the world. I find this to be ESPECIALLY true when it comes to teenagers. (not all of teenagers, however.) I see it a lot in the GD and on other message boards too...

The world is basically full of insecure people. And sadly, to feel good they pick on others...or exclude certain folk...

as far as those girls go just tell them that their opinion doesn't matter and that they are just jealous of your natural beauty..where as they spend hours in the bathroom before school just to look the part of a himan being...and there is nothing wrong with having big legs...it just means that its harder for you to get knocked to the ground in a fight...you just have to keep in mind that no matter what anyone else says your opinion is the one that TRUELY matters and no one can take that away from you...
as far as society goes thats just their basis becasue for centuries women had to be small if they were to be acceptable...and now that still lives (for some odd reason) but luckly we were born into a society that is free to determine its own actions and decisions. but thats all i have to say otherwise i'll be thrown into a tangent and i'll never get out it...just remember that its your body not theirs and what you think of yourself is totally up to you....your opion is the only one that matters when it comes to you body.

sweatdrop Actually, for centuries larger women were sexier...

You can still see this sentiment in some african countries, but it used to be that way in european cultures, too.

I've always thought of the term "thunder thighs" as a complement. >.>

People wouldn't bother to call anyone "fat and ugly" if they weren't two different things.

Society promotes an inconvenient standard of beauty as a way to stimulate economic growth. I personally tend to find asthetic/objective physical beauty in a range of sizes, from petite to gargantuan. The term "whale" is used as an insult, yet people don't go on expensive cruises to watch goldfish.

I'm kinda rambling here, but basically, being big means you're more, not less, likely to be pretty and almost guarentees that you are sexy. =3

I don't know how I'd react if somebody called me thunder thighs. I don't really consider it a compliment, though...because I personally hate having otherwise skinny, muscular legs and then fat inner thighs. I wear through pants right there first, and it's embarassing. Plus because they wear out so fast right there, I have to keep buying new work pants which I can't afford.... that's a touchy subject for a lot of girls for various reasons.

I would actually think that promoting people to be a normal, healthy weight or even overweight would be just as economically sound as pushing people to be unaturally skinny and suffer from eating disorders. Other than the jobs lost in the weight loss industry... but the consumers are the ones that buy into it, if we would just stop then the industry wouldn't thrive... it's what we want. Plus sized clothing costs more, it's true that more overweight people are unhealthy (I'm healthy as a horse, but much of my weight is just natural...I have always been fat, and unless I take drastic measures instead of living like a normal person I will always be larger than the norm... I've known multiple overweight people who it was obvious were unhealthy, and their weight wasn't helping), if people were taught to enjoy their food more, resturants and such would do better.

And I dunno, I have to say that being sexy garuntees you're sexy. Being confident garuntees you're sexy. I've seen skinny girls I thought were totally unappealing, or that extra weight would look better on. I realize it's your opinion that they are, and more power to you. I saw Drew Barrymore's new movie, and even though she's already skinny, she looked so much better a few pounds skinnier for that role... I've seen fat girls that are totally disgusting, but part of it is that they obviously have no pride in their appearance and don't bother to care for themselves (which I've seen skinny girls like that, too) and then I've seen fat and skinny girls that are totally beautiful, and it's because they have confidence and realize that they have to put some effort into being attractive. Yes, being born with beautiful features helps... I come from a very attractive family, I got lucky with that, even if I am larger than most of them. But it's also in the way you carry yourself, in the way you care for yourself... it's not all about your genes. I saw a very skinny, attractive faced lady who had on bright pink blush and it looked like a (straight) man with no previous make up experience did her eyemakeup... I wanted to ask her if she really thought the clown look was in, and that she could be so pretty if she'd just look at what's popular and acceptable makeup wise and if she'd just actually use colors that compliment her.

Ok, now I just went on a rant... but I can't say it enough in here... confidence is key!

I agree with the ridiculousness of society, and its too bad that those girls tease you, but in relation to "thunder thighs" I just thought of something. To me, thunder itself is a powerful, strong, awesome thing. So if you look at it that way, they may have given you a term of empowerment, if you choose to reclaim it.
