Complete and utter exhaustion had finally claimed the little pup. He didn't remember how long he'd been wandering for, didn't remember the last time he'd eaten properly. He remembered, though, the morning he'd woken to find his mother gone; hard to forget that particular day. The days since had bled together until he couldn't separate them, each one a test of survival, hiding from the bigger predators and often competing with the buzzards for a few scraps of meat and the skeletons they left behind. He hadn't been finding living that way easy; he was underweight, and undersized.

His little body was curled up in some longish dry grass in the shade of a large rock. Well... to an adult, it wouldn't be a large rock, but to the small pup it was plenty enough to shelter his thin body from the glare of the afternoon sun. He was rolled into a ball, the grass around him a little flattened to make a sort of nest, and his little black nose was buried in his fluffy white tail - the only part of him, like the the tuft of white on his head, that actually looked healthy, if a little dirty. He had a leaf stuck in his tail, for example. Despite his tiredness, though, his sleep was light. He'd learned the hard way not to go into a deep sleep. The slightest noise could wake him up...

There was a rather large noise from behind the puppies bed as a large white hyena crashed through the grasses and smashed into the rock with a loud thud, followed by muttered vurses and then a rather random giggle.

Pulling herself up, the small adult female shook the dirt and leaves from her white coat, though she figured she'd have to give it a good wash later that day. She examined the rock she had smashed into, then noticed the small pup behind it. "Why hello there!" She said happily, her bright green eyes watching him with kindness. he was ditzy, but even she could tell he was underweight and exhausted. And alone.

Toma smiled kindly down at him, her head tilted to the side and her multi-colored mohawk mane blowing around in the small breeze that tickled her face. "I'm Toma." She said, sitting down and keeping her smile intact, "Who're you?"

Naturally, the crash into the rock he was sleeping against woke him up, as it probably would have anyone. Instantly he was frightened, not knowing who or what had disturbed him, but alas, he was too exhausted to move. His legs ached, and they refused to obey his commands and push him to a stand, let alone run, or even walk. He couldn't have crawled if he'd wanted to. All he could do it curl up even tighter into a ball as his bright blue eyes peered up at Toma through the the fur of his tail. He could only sit there and wait for her to hurt him like the others had.

But she didn't. He received a greeting instead, and it confused him. It made him hopeful, too, though, and his ears rose a bit from where they'd plastered themselves to his skull. She was the first stranger to treat him kindly, and he wasn't quite sure what to do. Giving his name might be a good idea, though; if he was cooperative, she might be nicer to him for longer.

"I-Ilizi. I'm Ilizi."

Toma was no fool, though she did lack quite a lot of common sense. But even she could tell that this skinny little ball of fur was frightened and alone. She gave him a motherly smile, and laid down next to him, though not too close. She didn't want to scare him off.

Folding one leg underneath her, she tilted her head to the side with another kind smile. "It's very nice to meet you, Ilizi. Tell me son, where are your parents?" SHe asked the question carefully, hoping he could tell her he was lost. Perhaps he had wandered far from his parents and she could help him get home. Something inside her told her he had no one, though. It made her heart ahce, and she watched him with a sad smile.

Ilizi looked apprehensive as Toma laid down near him, still a tiny bit suspicious even if this colourful female, who would have bedazzled his eyes if he wasn't so wary of bigger animals, was being nice to him. At least this way, though, she might find it a bit more difficult to scratch or bite him if she suddenly decided to turn on him. And she wasn't so big and intimidating when she was closer to his level.

Toma's carefully spoken words had a predictable reaction, though; Ilizi's dusty white tail lifted to cover his eyes, hiding the tears that immediately welled in them at the thought of his mother. He didn't understand why he had suddenly become alone in this world, but it still hurt him. He had thought his mother loved him; why had she gone away and left her little Ilizi behind?

"I dun know where my mama is," he murmured quietly after a moment, the tone of voice thick with the tears Toma couldn't see.

Toma didn't need to see his tears to hear them in his voice. She looked at him with concern and sympathy. She assumed he was lost, and she gave a small smile to him. "Perhaps I can help you find her?" She asked, putting her head closer to the ground and near him. "Don't be afraid, I won't hurt you." She said softly, a very motherly tone in her voice.

Ilizi shook his head almost violently, the movement dislodging his tail from covering his eyes, revealing their watery look and the damp on his fur. "N-no, she l-left!" He gave a rather pitiful, whimpering sob, looking out through blurry vision toward the distant horizon directly in front of him. "I f-followed her smell, b-but it's gone!"

Toma got a sinking feeling that perhaps this young pups mother had died, but she hoped for the best and that he was merely lost. She gave him another warm smile, inching closer to him and setting her head down in front of him. "How about we make a deal? I'll stay with you tonight and help you find your mother in the morning. And we can go hunting together. Sound good?" She offered in a soft and caring voice.

Ilizi turned his bright, watery eyes up to Toma's face. Was this female serious? She would really stay with him and keep him safe for the night? Ilizi hadn't had a decent night's sleep since his mother left. His sleep patterns were highly irregular, only crawling into the best hiding place he could find when exhaustion wouldn't let him stay awake any longer.

Slowly nodding his head, one of his ears twitching, he managed to say quietly, "Y-yes, please st-stay."

Toma gave him another warm smile and nodded. "Of course I will." She said, inching closer yet again towards him. She curled her body 'round his, almost like a living shield, and set her head down beside him. "I won't let anything bad happen to you, Ilizi." She whispered softly with another smile. "You sleep now, I'll keep watch." She raised her head to the stars, scanning the lands before them with a watchful gaze.

Ilizi tensed involuntarily and instinctively as Toma scooted closer and pressed against him, but after a few moments, when nothing bad happened, he allowed himself to relax. Toma would look after him tonight. He was safe, for the first time in a long time.

The tiny pup let his eyes slide slowly closed. He was exhausted, and now that his fear of Toma was dissipating, his eyelids again felt extremely heavy. He laid his head down once more and curled his tail around himself. As he began to drift off into sleep again, he snuggled closer into Toma's warmth, the first he'd lain beside since his mother disappeared.

Toma watched the little pup fall into the land of dreams, smiling slightly at him as he did. Perhaps he'll meet his mother there. She thought, wondering what happened to her.

Toma pushed the thoughts aside and gazed up at the heavens above, and thanked them for letting her find the small lost pup. She then set her head down on the ground beside him, and closed her eyes, letting herself slip into dreams as well.
