Maria had been on pins and needles all day. The woman had said that it'd be two days before the infants appeared, and Maria was unclear whether that meant she was supposed to expect the kids to appear today, on day two, or tomorrow, after day two was over. Well... day two was nearly over, and no infants. No sign of anything out of the unusual, unless one counted that the house smelled of paint from Edward's work on the new children's bedroom.

He'd chosen to go with a green and lavender theme, and Maria had felt it best not to argue with him. They'd built the crib together, and that, at least, had been entertaining.

She was happily tired now, and she had to admit that the spare bedroom looked nice as a kids room. The crib was more than big enough for two infants or toddlers, and the wood was a nice dark oak. The walls... well... maybe she didn't like the colors, but she had to admit that Edward had done a nice job on the pastorial mural he'd done on one of the walls. There was even a toy box, stuffed with soft, squishy animals.

It would do.

But she was exhausted, and so found herself slipping into her pj bottoms and worn black shirt. She flipped on the stereo, pulled back her crisp white sheets, and slipped quickly off to sleep.

As sleep claimed her the woman's soul slipped from her body to float above it, a ghostly version of the relic still hanging from her neck. She was awake and aware this time, and she was not dead-just floating above her body in this dream. And across the room a ghostly door beckoned for her to pass through it-though to where one was not sure.

So, this was how it was going to happen. Like with her previous experiance, Maria had no illusions about what was happening. This was not 'just a dream'. She knew her dreams. There were the good ones, things of abstract complexity, the art and rhythm of numbers, of being part of that pattern. And the bad ones, things of chaotic, painful beauty, dreams that brought her back to the lands of her father, a land she so desperately tried to forget.

This then, this hovering conciousness, was a third path, unlike her usual nights. Perhaps it was a dream, but if it was, it was significant. If not, well, it was still significant.

Movement, then, was a matter of will. She stopped hovering, settling her feet on the ground, because that was where feet should be. Her ghostly wings were oddly suitable in this newly immaterial form, though, of course, she still did her best to ignore them.

The door then. What other true choice was there? And if this was of importance, as it must be, one was wise to follow the logic of the dream.

She passed through the door.

When she had passed through the door it vanished behind her, no surprise to Maria though.

On the other side was a darkened room with a strange black diamond throne and a set of steps. No one was in this room except for two bodies laying upon the stairs. They weren't corpses persay. The two obviously lacked life, and there was a mark on the one's neck and the other's chest to indicate that they had been killed-one by decapitation and the other by impalement-but neither seemed well like an actual dead body. No evidence that they'd bleed, no rot, no decay, no post mordom symphtoms. It was like they were in a state of suspended animation.

The one with a ring around his neck from his decapitation had a blue grey skintone. His hair was a messy spikey cut that in the light looked grey. A slightly rugged looking chest, covered mainly by a black leather vest which bore studs and fangs on it like his leather pants and belt. He seemed to have a rather demonly quality to him and also a messy seeming side. He was practically sprawled on the steps.

Meanwhile, right near him, fallen as gracefully as he had fallen ungracefully, was a girl. Her hair was long and brown with a gentle curl to it. Her skin seemed to have once held a soft warm glow but her skin here was of a sickly nature and rather pale, just as her hair held a slight drabness to it's color. As if something had occuered to scar her soul before her death and left her in a horrid state. Unlike on the male there were scratches and bruises on her arms, legs, neck and face, and her dress was torn. And through her heart was the line that signified she'd been stabbed.

The two seemed to have a glow about them indicating that Maria should touch each. These were the deities she was to care for. Persuasion and Manipulation.

Well, huh. Maria walked cautiously into the room, taking in the scene. Curious by nature, she almost wanted to explore this new dream landscape. At least it was, mostly, tidy. There was strangeness to it, but not illogical strangeness. A set of stairs. A diamond throne. Bodies.

These were symbols she understood.

Bodies.

She had been called many things, in her life time. Frigid b***h. Ice queen. But she was not without her humanity. It was in her face, a sudden saddness as she studied those still forms. Compassion. She moved forward, because she had no choice. In dreams, there were no choices. Not really.

She knelt next to them, not touching them immediately, but looking. The male looked dangerous, the female looked broken. Broken beyond simply lack of life.

They did not look like twins. But genetically, that could make sense. Did gods have genetics?

She reached out, with both hands. Her left brushed along the mark on the man's neck, her right touched the woman's heart, and they lingered there.

The relic around her neck seeemed to surrouned with light as did the bodies when she touched them. Completely encased in a glow so neither was visible, what Maria was able to see was that the glowing relic-as if made of light-shot from her neck into the two bodies. And when it did, the two glowing forms began to shrink. And when the light faded, in their place, were two children. The boy still had the blue grey skin with now more obviously white hair and was chubby. The girl on the other hand was soft and sweet looking with lovely dark brown curls and rosey cheeks-both which bore a sunkist glow even though she'd only just been reborn and it was dark. She no longer had that horrid broken look either-remembering nothing right now. And the boy-he just looked pouty and seemed to be trying to roll over and to to sleep. The girl was looking up at Maria with a big smile on her face.

Maria was tempted to close her eyes, uncomfortable with such intense light in what had not been a bright location. But no, this was important. She saw as the relic seemed to leave her, and enter the glowing brilliance that had been the two bodies.

She blinked a few times as the light faded, chasing away the residual brilliance until the small forms of the children became clear. So here they were. These infants, the servants of an evil god? Strange. So very strange. They seemed so fragile now, had seemed fragile before, laying still and silent on the steps. What pushed one to serve evil? Had they felt themselves justified? And what had gone wrong? Where had they failed?

But for now, it didn't matter. What mattered were the infants themselves, and getting them home to the room that now awaited them.

"Come on, then." Her first words in this dark place.

Reaching down, she picked the boy up first, doing her best not to wake him. He did not seem of the sort to wake up smiling. "Shh..." She murmured softly. "Shh..."

The girl, awake and smiling, was next. Maria touched her cheek gently, remembering the state she'd found her in. When would she remember what had happened? Perhaps she would be better off if she could continue to forget.

"I do not trust you, little one." She whispered, as she picked up the child. It would not be wise to trust either of them, she reminded herself.

"But perhaps you'll prove me wrong."

The little girl snuggled up against Maria's chest, cooing sweetly. When the woman picked up the children-thereby accepting them-the door back to her room and their bodies reappeared, allowing the guardian to now have her two children.

((This is le done))
