Story: Nearly every year of Louis’s life was filled with grief and heartache. After a half-dozen failed attempts at suicide, he is taken to a mental health ward where he can be taken care of and watched over by psychiatrists. While he is there, he meets a nurse of sorts who works there as a summer job, making sure the patients are comfortable and fairly happy. Will love finally bring him emotional and mental peace, or will it push him over the edge to bring the sweet relief he had been striving for-death?

Elyssa stretched as she walked in the door of the hospital. It was her first day on the job and she was looking forward to it. School had ended, and now she just had a few classes at a local community college to worry about. In her hand was a blue grocery store bag containing the shirt she was given as uniform, a hair-tie with a brush to bull her long brown locks away from her eyes, and a book she needed for classes to read if she got the chance. Other wise, she was simply dressed in a floor-length plain black skirt and a green long-sleeved shirt.
The receptionist pointed out the bathrooms and when she returned, Elyssa had changed into the new crisp white shirt and her hair was piled into a bun, a few stray whisps of hair hanging slightly in her eyes.

One of the older nurses approached her. "You'll be looking after that guy," she said pointing over towards Louis's room. "Name is Louis Pascow. He doesn't talk and only knows one thing in sign language. He's been known to bite people, but don't worry he had his shots. If he gives you any trouble, page me or one of the doctors. Got it?"

Elyssa nodded and opened her mouth to speak but the nurse turned around before she could ask her question. What did he know in sign language? She sighed and shook her head before turning and taking a deep breath. "Here goes nothing..." She whispered to herself before approaching the door. She knocked a few times to warn him that she was coming in before opening the door and stepping inside. "Louis? I'm Elyssa."

Louis looked over at her and gave a gruff snort before he continued to stare out the window. He figured she would be like all of the other nurses that worked here. best just to ignore her, he thought to himself. Maybe she'll go away like the others do.

She shifted uncomfortably. What should she do? The room was a little bit of a mess, but she wasn't sure if she should clean it. "I'll just do a little cleaning, if you get hungry, let me know. You don't have to tell me what you want, you can write it down or something. I understand that you don't want to speak." She did understand but Elyssa wasn't ready to share too much about herself yet. Silently, she left him to his thoughts and began making his bed.
((What is his room like? Obviously bed and a bathroom, anything else?))

((Television, closet, a bed stand, and a couple chairs.))
Louis rolled his eyes at her and watched her make the bed. He was going to that before she came in and now he had nothing to do but stare out the window or watch her. He grabbed his notebook off the bed stand and pulled out a pen form the pocket. "Why are you here?" he wrote. "This is the worst place in the world." He showed her the notebook and waited for a response.

Elyssa read the message and thought about it for a moment, choosing her words carefully. "I think that my time should be spent helping other people, or doing what I can. I don't know why I'm specifically in this room, but I know why I'm here at this hospital, I don't like seeing people get hurt, but I'm also a bit of a coward so instead of stopping people from getting hurt I decided I want to help them get better." Her face and her tone was sincere, she was not saying this because it seemed like an answer to win his favor, she said it because it was true. "Why are you here? Especially if you hate it so much."

"I have no choice," Louis wrote in his careful, yet sloppy hand writing. "Unless the doctor clears me as 'mentally and emotional stable' I'm not allowed to leave the building. Well, not supervised anyway. I've request to be moved to a new building, but they won't move me."

Elyssa shook her head. "That's not what I meant. I already knew that. What I mean is, if you hate this so much, why aren't you trying to get better. I doubt that sitting by a window staring into space is anyway to make progress and get out. If you hate this place so much, then why aren't you trying to get out?" She hoped she made sence, in her mind what she was saying comprehended. But she wasn't sure if her words were clear to others, sometimes she had that problem. "I don't think any other building will be any better, honestly."

"It doesn't work, really," he wrote slowly. "They know nothing about me and thus do not know how to 'treat' me. It's a horrible, vicious cycle that I don't wish to repeat. That is why I won't talk."

What he said made some sence but she still didn't get it completely. "But if you want out, then get yourself out. I understand why you don't want to talk, but if its the only way to help yourself get out, then isn't it just worth it? For a little bit?" Elyssa brushed some stray hair out of her eyes and adjusted her position in the seat to be more comfortable.

"Okay then, let's just say I try and I do eventually get out," Louis wrote, now on a fresh page of notebook paper. "Then what? I have no family to live with, no source of income, and my resume(Sp?) for a job would fall a bit short of most places' criteria. The Army, etc. is out of the picture too. I've already tried before I even got into this place."
