It was a dreary sort of afternoon, the sort of which depressed the mood of anyone who was sensitive by nature. The sky was a uniform gray in color, and the air just seemed to hang in place, cold and stale. That was exactly the reason why Kari had decided to make today her shopping day. She had no desire to be out in the weather, and this shopping had to get done at some point. Evie was growing and needed a few new clothes.
"Eeeeeddddd!" Evie declared suddenly, tugging on her mother's sleeve. The infant was propped up on her mother's hip and clutching tightly to Kari's shoulder. Every now and then, she would point at something she found to her liking. Usually, the outfit in question was too small, but Kari would indulge Evie by taking it off the rack to show it to her.
The article of clothing that Evie was staring at now was a red T-shirt with a giant sunburst on the front of it. Kari chuckled. "Yeah, that's red, all right. I don't know how well it'd match you, though," she added, tapping one of the girl's three-fingered hands. She doubted Evie cared; she just liked the bright pattern.

She was cranky. Oh, she was cranky. It didn't help that she had to waddle helplessly through the aisles with a hand on her growing stomach. She scowled as she scanned along the shelves that she passed, brow furrowed when she saw particularily bright things. Yes, Genevieve Aranel was quite unhappy indeed. Perhaps I wouldn't be so if Wes had come with me. But, of course, he wouldn't. That deadbeat psi-vampire...no doubt he would fail to contribute anything of value to this pregnancy that he caused. Gen raked a hand through her dark hair, moving it away from her face. She couldn't wait to see him again in order to give him a piece of her mind.
She paused when she came to a collection of clothes for infants, reaching forward to run her hands across a pair of black overalls. Oh, what was she here for anyway? It wasn't like she could buy anything without knowing what gender her child was to be. She supposed that she should go back for a check-up, where she might be able to find what her baby was going to be, but at the time, she felt much too busy. "Busy, busy, always busy..." she muttered to herself, pulling a pair of tiny blue jeans from one of the shelves and unfolding them to better examine them.

After having to extract a bright green shirt from Evie's unbelievably strong grip, Kari had to chuckle at the girl's persistence. The girl certainly knew what she wanted, even if what she wanted wasn't in the right size. Maybe they would find something halfway appealing down the next aisle.
No sooner had she turned down the aisle, though, when she spied someone else. The other female was a vampiress of some sort. Kari worked with them; she knew their kind. The poor vampiress also appeared to be heavily pregnant, which aroused some sympathy on Kari's part. Intrigued, the hellhound Ancient stepped toward the other female. "I'm guessing you're doing pre-emptive shopping?"
Evie, still clinging to her mother, gave a curious burble and then went back to glancing around for clothing, trying to grab onto something especially bright-looking. Oooh... colors!

The sound of the woman's voice made Genevieve's head snap to look at her with slightly narrowed, untrusting eyes. After growing up in a coven with her blood-sucking 'family', Genevieve had learned to be wary of people she didn't know very well. Growing up in a coven also, however, kept her from seeing all the different sort of races that this world held, and this was a new one. Her eyes scanned across her horns and fur before settling on the child in her arms. She had to admit, the child was quite cute.
"...I suppose you could say that." she said softly, tucking a lock of her hair behind one of her ears before looking at the jeans in her hands again. She lightly ran her thumb over them before folding them and placing them back. "As much as I might not like to admit it, I believe my baby is due quite soon." She let out a deep sigh, downcasting her eyes for only a moment before turning to face the woman and looking down at her child again. "How old is your little one?" Gen tilted her head a little to the side, her eyes following to where the little child was reaching out towards. Ack, bright colors! Eww.

Kari was not in the least bit surprised to see the mistrustful look in the vampiress' eyes. After a self-recriminating thought for having startled the other, she smiled in a friendly fashion, not bothering to hide her own overlong fangs. It had been a long-ago lesson that taught her that trying to hide the fangs made her look twice as dangerous and very cranky. That was not an impression she liked to leave on people.
"I remember those days. It was a little scary to realize at first how close her arrival was," Kari admitted readily, glancing at the jeans. As soon as Evie was slightly more mobile, she had a feeling the little girl would need some of those: flexible enough to get around in but tough enough to withstand anything the child went through. Considering the mischief Evie got into now, Kari was almost afraid to think of what she'd get into in the future.
Brought back to reality by the question, Kari tilted her horned head to one side to think, yellow eyes narrowing slightly in concentration. How old was Evie?! "Nearly five months. She is growing awfully quickly, though," she confessed, watching as the infant stared intently at a blue and yellow striped shirt. "Evie, that's going to clash with your hair and skin something awful. Don't even think about it."
Evie just giggled in response, waving her twin tails about.

((x_x I hate having to go on hiatus.))
Genevieve nodded gently, her eyes still on the child in her arms. Evie... It was a nice name. Not one that she would choose for her child, but nice anyway. Perhaps it was a nickname? She resisted the urge to shake her head. Whether it was a nickname or not, parents were certainly naming their children odd things these days. Apple. Pilot. Those were common nouns, for crying out loud. Nouns should not be names.
Shaking herself out of her thoughts, Genevieve looked back up at the woman. Whoa. Those fangs rivaled her own. What was this woman? It was a shame that her manners prevented her from asking straight out...she really was quite curious. After tracing the woman's fangs, Gen looked over her shoulder at the racks of shirts again, lightly tugging one down that was dark green, with stripes of light green across it. ...Ugh, what am I thinking?! She hated green. Without another moment to lose, she tossed it back onto the shelf like it had the plague.
She looked back at the woman, lightly resting her hands on her belly. "I'm terrified, myself. I don't think I'm ready for it." Whoa, that was unexpected. Had she just confided in a total stranger? Surely this was a simple side effect of those mood swings and hormone shifts she had been having, the ones that made her resemble a watermelon. Yes, that was it. She cleared her throat, looking down at the little girl again. "She does look big for five months. She'll grow to be quite tall, I think."

((Happens to us all, my dear. -snug- If you need time away, then take the time. 3nodding And before I forget, a picture of Kari, though she is dressed a tad immodestly in the pic... -facepalm-: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v200/Dragonita007/_Lone_Hellhound__by_Deafblood.jpg ))
Judging by the look that she got when she smiled, Kari surmised that the vampiress didn't know quite what to think of her. She wasn't surprised; most others didn't. For that matter, Kari herself wasn't really sure exactly what she was. Shrugging it off, she watched the other woman take a green shirt down and then toss it back. Green... her favorite color. Granted, most shades of green clashed with her skin, for obvious reasons, but it was still quite a lovely color.
"I don't think you're really ready for it until it happens. I hadn't even settled on a name before Evie decided it was time to be born," Kari chuckled, tilting her horned head to one side to watch the other woman. Poor thing. If she was going at this alone as well, she probably had no idea what to expect. Kari, at least, had had her mother's experience and her family's help with the whole ordeal. "But when it happens, you'll know what to do." At the thought of Evie growing to be large, though, she made a small face. "I do hope not. It'll be hard to discipline her as a teen if she is taller!"
Evie seemed to understand that she was being looked at, and she trilled happily, waving a chubby hand at the unfamiliar female. "Hihihi!"

"Somehow, I don't think you'll have much problems with disciplining her." Genevieve mused, seeing how likeable the little girl seemed to be at the moment. Of course, she was only 5 months old, so that could change, but still...it was worth hoping for. The corners of her lips quirked into a tiny smile at Evie's enthusiastic greeting, and couldn't resist lifting her hand to give her a tiny wave of her own. "She seems to be very sweet-tempered at the moment, at least, unlike most children I come across these days." Indeed, the young ones at the coven always seemed to be a bit bitter and disobedient, though she chalked that off to the other vampires and psi-vampires teaching them to be that way by their own actions.
She hesitated before looking back up at the woman. "I hope I'll be ready for it, when the day comes. I was expecting a bit of help, but that's apparently not going to happen either." There she went again. Those blasted hormones were going to ruin her, completely and fully. Sure, sharing her thoughts was better than curling up in a corner and writing emo poems, but she still wasn't quite used to it at the moment.
After brushing a lock of hair away from her pale face, Genevieve extended one of her hands. "I'm Genevieve, by the way." It seemed rude not to introduce herself after she just finished complaining a bit to her.

"I hope I don't. I think that she just doesn't realize how much gray hair she gives me when she disappears," Kari confessed readily, grinning at her child's enthusiasm. "But my mum said that she'll probably calm down as she gets older." She didn't quite know what to say about the vampiress' comments concerning children. Then again, the few vampiric children she had met had all been... well, freaky, to say the least. Ugh. What a nightmare.
Shifting Evie's weight a bit on her hip, Kari extended a green three-fingered hand to meet Genevieve's, smiling widely. "Nice to meet you, Genevieve. I'm Kari, and this is Evie."
She had to suppress a wince of sympathy at the vampiress' plaint, though. Maybe one of her vampiric friends had gotten her pregnant and then bailed out on her. That was never a fun situation to be in. "Do you have any family around that can help you out or at least give you advice and moral support?"
Evie giggled at both adults, patting her mother's hair and continuing to wave energetically at Genevieve. "Hihihi!" she chirped again.

Genevieve gave a little half shrug to the woman's first comment, her expression still appearing to be completely apathetic, but nodded as well. "At least the gray will provide a pleasant contrast with the green instead of clashing dreadfully." she stated dryly. Not too many people seemed to get her sense of humor, and she didn't expect this woman to either, but she refused to conceal any part of herself just for the woman's behalf.
She firmly shook Kari's hand, pleased to have learned how to give a proper handshake a few weeks ago from Wes before he stopped returning her phone calls and letters and the like. Jerk. she thought, frowning a bit for only a moment before looking down at Evie. "It's nice to meet you, Evie." she said, a little lilt of kindness providing her voice with a nice sort of inflection. She even managed to give the little girl a tiny half-smile of sorts. When she released Kari's hand and looked back up at her, her question about family made her mentally wince.
"Tell me...have you sought information from blood or psionic vampires lately?" she asked rhetorically. She let only a moment pass before she shook her head. "They're not the best people to lay on a couch in front of and tell your problems to." A hand raked through her hair, pulling it away from her face. For the life of her, she still couldn't pinpoint why she felt comfortable around this woman. Perhaps it was because she was rather odd, like Genevieve, though her oddness was on the outside while Gen's lay in her bloodstream.

Kari had to admit that Genevieve had a point. Gray and green did mesh well, or, at least, they matched better than green and red. "That's true. But I like brown better for now," she said, rolling her eyes affectionately at the way Evie continued to pet her hair.
Evie cooed at Genevieve and gave her the almost too-cheerful smile that only the very young can get away with. Then the infant promptly went back to stroking her mother's hair, warbling away in her odd little voice.
Surprised, though pleased, by the firm handshake, Kari's smile widened as her hand was released, and she put her newly freed hand to good use, shifting Evie's weight on her hip again. Gosh, the girl was getting big! She had the good grace to cringe, though, when Genevieve reminded her of the vampires. "Ah. Well, I can see how that'd be a problem."

"Ah, brown..." Genevieve tilted her head up slightly and transferred her eyes to a point far off, seeming to consider this color. A few moments later, she winced slightly and shook her head. "Not my color. It looks rather odd on me, with my skin and hair and eyes and the like." She rubbed the back of her neck in a rather sheepish manner, moving her eyes back to Kari. "I've noticed I prefer blue over anything else. Not sure what relevance that has...but your hair does indeed go along rather well with your skin tone..." She trailed off a bit, rubbing her neck a little more before finally dropping her hand back to her side.
As Evie went back to her little chatterings, Gen looked back down at her. One corner of her mouth fully twitched into a half-smile, one that would perhaps look frightening if she had fangs like her blood-sucking cousins, but managed to not be too terrifying on her. "She's adorable. I can only hope that my child will be the same way." Her eyes became rather contemplative as she watched Evie stroke her mother's hair, Gen's own hand resting lightly on her bulging stomach. What rests in here? A male? A female? Blood-sucking vampire or psionic? Will it even be a vampire? She paused her musings when Kari remarked about her previous statement.
Genevieve looked back up at Kari, shrugging nonchalantly and managing to look rather unaffected. "You learn to deal with being alone in time. If anything, it helps your own identity grow instead of it being based around your parents and their beliefs." Her expression, which had reverted to being as apathetic as when she had first come across Kari, gave no indication on whether she planned to parent her child in this way or not.

"I'm sure you could pull it off somehow," Kari said, flashing her fangs in another friendly smile. She flushed a darker shade of green and said a polite, if somewhat quiet, 'thank you' to the vampiress' comment. She didn't often get complimented on her appearance. Actually, most living beings with half a brain gave her a very wide berth. She knew for a fact, though, that she looked more dangerous than she was.
Usually.
Watching Evie babble made Kari's expression soften immediately. She couldn't help that she adored the little girl; Evie's enthusiasm was very infectious, besides the fact that she was a sweetheart... if a bit of a mischeviously-inclined one. "I wouldn't worry too much about your child. If you try your hardest to raise them right, I think they'll turn out fine. My siblings have... minus the one whom we adopted when she was older," Kari added, cringing slightly at that thought and at Genevieve's comment concerning vampires. Oi. She'd forgotten that small portion of vampiric culture. "I'd imagine it would get rather lonesome after awhile, though."

Genevieve brushed a bit of her hair away from her face, nodding to Kari's comments as she began to mull them over in her brain. Lonesome was an understatement when it came to a vampire, blood-sucking or not. She imagined that was why so many of them nabbed blood dolls at a young vampiric age, or stuck close to their covens as they grew. It was why she had gotten close to Wes, was it not? Yes...she still recalled the first moment she had seen him in the coven, his smiling face, his strong physique, the way he didn't even hesitate as he plunged his fangs into hil slave's neck...she gave a visibly shudder. Why had she been so attracted that in the beginning again?
Realizing that she was staring into space in silence as she often did, she seemed to physically snap out of it, and looked towards Kari again. "You act like you aren't complimented very much." She tilted her head slightly towards the other woman. "Or, at least, that you are incredibly modest." She paused, thinking for a moment, before finishing her thought. "You shouldn't seem so surprised. Really, even if people do not consider you beautiful on the outside, which you are, they should notice that you are amazingly gorgeous on the inside." Dear Goddess, why was she complimenting the lady like this? She never did this. It had to be that little girl in her arms or something.
Her eyes flickered down to the girl again, once again giving her partial smile. "I guess I'm simply afraid of raising my child alone. I don't trust my coven around children anymore." She left it at that, giving a shrug. "Regardless, I suppose I'll be able to do it."
