Now, this was poking at me for a while..... many people complain they'd like to do and say more on Gaia, but due to the PG-13 thing, it kinda limits the opions. Now, yeah, the age cap thing is a good idea, but, ummm.... there are so many dorky kids who wind up breaking the rulings here though, and I havne't really seen any older people do so (as older folk know how to READ TOS RULES)...
My questing is, now, Gaia MUST get a large sum of money with the donations and such..... Why don't they draw up a separate server? Second Life did that, they have a teens one and a more mature one for adults. They could put harder caps on the youth server accounts and ease up a bit on the adult ones. I don't know.... it was just a though....

Gaia actually runs on several servers, over which all the facets of the site are spread. So it wouldn't just be an issue of getting one more server... They do that all the time, just to handle the growing traffic. It would probably mean having to get a second set of servers and making a complete mirror of the site, just for the older people. Factoring the amount of extra expense and work, along with the whole new can of legal worms you open up just by making a, say, 18 and over site, I doubt it's really within the admins' interests to make a mature users version.

I agree that your theory has merit, however, I have met some "leet, dorky, what-the-hell" users and ones who don't know basic spelling and grammar who are over 18 and some positively thoughtful and articulate users who are well under that. One thing that I've always enjoyed about the internet is it's ability to break down barriers. Even back in the days before web browsers (now I'm dating myself) BBS message boards and the like. Participants were judged solely on his or her ability to express themselves in an articulate manner. Besides, how would it be regulated, people could just lie about their age.
Our guild here was basically designed to segregate us from the less mature users. We could made our own ED or GD here. It would be interesting to read a discussion from strictly adult users.
I personally don't feel limited by the PG 13 rating. There is nothing I'd want to say to a group of strangers that would need a higher rating than that.
If I do feel I want to converse in private with a particular user in a rated R manner I'll move the conversation to MSN

I agree it would be a good idea, but I know kids would always lie their way into the adult area, no matter what kind of hardcore restrictions they put on it. I know on IMVU (sort of like Second Life), MySpace, and other similar sites, kids CONSTANTLY lie about their age, and many of them have been able to access adult areas, despite everything the companies do to prevent it. Heck, just look at all the nastiness that happens on Gaia anyway, despite the TOS rules.. people still get away with stuff. Not to mention, if there were a "Kidz only" site, or "teens only" site, that pervy adults would definitely be lying about THEIR age, in order to hang out with the kiddos and whatnot.
I don't think Gaia wants to put themselves at that kind of risk, so a "no tolerance" policy is the best way to go, for the safety of everyone. I can bet you if it did have an adult area, it would have to be a monthly fee or something, it wouldn't be free. (Since credit card = more likely to be adult) The chance of a lawsuit is really more trouble than it's worth.
Not that kids couldn't still get tangled up with more than they can handle on the site as it now stands.. but it would be way more likely if they were catering specifically to "adult" interests.
You just can't trust kids to behave these days.. no matter what kind of restrictions, someone would get around it. Unless there is some crazy new technology that can 100% keep the kiddos out, and vice versa, I don't see it happening anytime soon. sweatdrop
