History: Marlene has had a happy childhood and a good life. She was a bit of a trouble-maker while she was in Highschool but has now learned to focus on her studies in College and has calmed down a bit. Ever since she was little she has had a strange fear of masks. Whenever she see's them she freaks out.

-Current amount of fear towards masks- small

Insert from Childhood
Marlene sat beside the warm fire watching as it flickered and sparked. She enjoyed sitting her in the evenings as her dad read her a story. Unfortunately today her dad was not here though. She sat with her legs crossed wondering what had kept him. Mommy said that he had a meating that he had to go to.

Marlene sighed, there really wasn't much she could do about it. She had tried to get mommy to read to her but she had just said 'I'm sorry hunny but mommy's tired right now'.

She looked up at the clock. It was seven-thirty and she would have to go to bed soon. She slowly got up and walked down the hall and into her room.

The small room was a pale blue and had posters of baby animals plastered all over it. There was a small bed and a dresser with a rat cage sitting on top of it. At the foot of the bed lay a small trunk that her daddy had carved for her for her fifth birthday. That was two years ago. She enjoyed playing dress-up and kept her costumes in there.

As she entered the room Marlene flipped on the light and made her way to the small chest. If her daddy wasn't here to read for her, she thought, then she would just act it out. The lid to the chest opened with a small squeek. She started looking through the jumble of clothing when she felt something hard. Had she put anything like that in here? Carefully she dug around a little more until she found it again and pulled it out. It was a small Mask just perfect for her face.

She looked around. Where had this come from? Had Mommy and Daddy hidden this in here for her? It was beautiful and glittered in the light. Slowly she put it up to her face. It was a perfect fit. Careful not to trip on anything that she had tossed out of the chest, Marlene got up and walked to the mirror. It was beautifuly made and looked good on her.

Not wanting to break the mask she reached up to take it off. The mask stayed put and wouldn't move. She pulled harder and harder but still it would not budge. It seemed that the harder she pulled the tighter it became. She started to panick and with panic came less air. Trying to tug it off she screamed over and over again. Her mother had heard the screams and came rushing in imediately. With a few words she managed to calm her daughter down and was able to carefully slip the mask off.

Marlene hugged her mom and sobbed. She was shaking from shock and fear. Why had the mask not come off and where had it come from.

"What's wrong?" Her mother asked her.

"T-t-the mask-k-k it w-w-woul-d-dn't co-m-me off-f-f" she stuttered.

Her mother looked down at the mask that she now held in her hands. "Where did you get this?" she asked

"I thought-t y-you g-gave it too m-me?" She replied

Marlene Role Play

The cool air rushed through the trees causing Marlene to shiver. It was unusually cold outside, even for February. She really did hope that the weather warmed soon. The cold really did not suit her and she wasn't sure how much more of it she could take.

Her boots left imprints in the mud as she crossed the field to go check on her horse Socrates. Unlike her, Socrates had a nice soft and warm fur coat to help keep out the cold. As she walked she could feel the sucking of mud and boot pulling free of each other. Oh god how she hated that sound. Mud and rain made everything so imposible. She couldn't ride. Not in this weather, and definately not with the added chores. Even she didn't know how she managed to get it all done. Mucking the stalls, feeding and watering, grooming, training, barn work.. it was all so much to do, and then to add work on top of it... Marlene sighed. There really just wasn't anything that she could do about it. She couldn't stay at the stable all day and she needed money. At least she did have the weekends off.

As she neared the barn she heard the whinny of horses. She looked up at the sky. The sun had set and it was getting harder to see. She carefully dug out a small flashlight from her purse and turned it on with a click. The light flickered a moment and died. Great, she thought, just great. What was she supposed to do now? She thumped it a few times and when it would not turn back on she tossed it back into her purse and hurried to the barn with what little light was left.

The barn was warm inside and smelled of leather and horses. This was definately her favorite place to be. She flipped the lights on and walked into the tack room to grab a spare flashlight. As she felt around for the light as her hand bumped something warm. She let out a high pitched shriek and stepped back her heart pounding in her throat. Gathering her courage she looked at what she had touched. She let out a sigh when she saw the small kitten. She shook her head and grabbed the flashlight before heading back into the barn to start her chores.

After the main chores were done she walked over and brought Socrates out of his stall. With gentle care she groomed and tacked him up in preperation for a small ride in the arena.

As she led Socrates into the arena the small pit-pat of the rain hitting the roof of the barn could be heard. With a pocket full of treats she carefully mounted and began a light trot around the arena. Once she had his full attention she urged him into a canter keeping her balance and making sure he was doing as he should.

After about half an hour of riding it was starting to get late and she needed to head home soon. She brought Socrates to a halt and prepared to dismount. She had just released her feet from the stirups when he suddenly reared into the air. Caught off guard Marlene lost her balance and hit the floor of the arena with the wind knocked out of her. As she regained her breath she tried to calm the frightened horse, while at the same time trying to figure out the cause for all of this. As she looked around she spotted a mask floating in midair only a foot away from her horse. She let out a scream, only succeeding in frightening her poor horse more. He threw up his head and yanked free of her and knocked her back onto the ground. This time he accidently trampled her and knocked her out.

Marlene awoke to the sound of a faint beeping. Slowly she opened her eyes and blinked at the white light. Where was she? What had happened? The last thing she remembered was falling to the ground. As her eyes began to adjust to the light she saw a machine to her left and a small tv atatched to the wall. Looking down she noticed she was laying in a bed and had an IV tube in her arm. Her eyes widened as she realized where she was.

The hospital had a sterile and clean feel to it and it had a stale aroma. Great, she just loved hospitals. Turning her head she noticed a figure to her right. It was her room mate Jessica. The older girl had fallen asleep in her chair and clutched a blanket to her chest. How long had she been there?

There was a knock on the door and Marlene looked up. The woman standing in the doorway was small and plump. In one hand she carried a small chart and the other held a glass of water. The nurse handed Marlene the glass and began to make notations on her chart. Everynow and then she would ask her how she felt, or if this or that hurt. She then handed Marlene some pills and left the room.

Marlene examined the pills for a few moments unsure of what they would do. Eventually she sighed and took them. One of them touched her tongue on the way down and she nearly threw-up. They definately didn't taste very good. She quickly downed the rest of the glass and then lay in silence for a moment.

She had begun to start to get drowsy when she saw a flicker of movement out of the corner of her eye. Quickly she snapped awake and looked, but saw nothing. Asuming that her mind was as tired as she felt she thought nothing of it. A few moments later she was nearly asleep when her machine went wild. She tried to wake up but couldn't she was tired, oh so tired. As she drifted off to unconsciousness she heard the doctors rush in and a faint laughter somewhere inside her mind.

Tuesday, March 6

Well, this is my first Journal entry. I guess that one was probably obvious... I just went through a near fatal riding accident and have just been discharged from the hospital. I have noticed some wierd things lately and so my room mate told me seeing a shrink might help. Which leads me to this journal. I'm not much of one for writing journals but aparently this is supposed to help me get my 'feelings' out there.. I guess we'll just have to see how well I keep this thing up.

Outside dusk had settled and darkness was begining to take over the land. Marlene sat beside a small table surrounded by books and documents. She sighed as she set down the heavy tome she was reading and rubbed her eyes. It was starting to get late and she wanted to go to bed but this essay was taking forever and due the next morning. She had searched book after book and yet it seemed the more she look the less she was able to write. Her eyelids by this time were heavy and sleep finaly took over and relief came setting in.

[enter into dream]

The world around her turned about. She couldn't seem to keep her balance. Marlene took a step forward only to find herself falling. As she fell she lost her breath. She clutched her throat silently screaming. She couldn't make a sound, couldn't breath. She hit the ground and was little again. Beside her was a small wooden chest that her father had made for her. The lid was off and clothes strewn about. Marlene stood up and walked to the mirror. On her face was a small, beautifully made mask. Her eyes turned green and she screamed. The mask came to life smothering her, makeing it impossible for her to draw air into her lungs.

She woke up screaming beside her desk. Her roommate Jessica opened the door and flipped on the light. "You ok? She asked

Marlene looked at the room around her. She was still a little disoriented but everything apeared to be fine. She sighed in relief. She had been dreaming. That was all. "Yeah I'm fine, Just a nightmare I guess."

"You want me to leave the light on?" Jessica asked her carefully, not wanting to upset or offend the girl.

"Yeah, that would be great thanks, I need to finish up this essay anyways." Jessica nodded and left the room.

Marlene rubbed her eyes and went back to looking at her books. Somewhere there had to be information in here. Ever since the night of her accident strange things had been hapening. The mask she had seen as a child was appearing again. What could this mean? It had to be psychological right? Just something that she was imagining? That's what her shrink had said. Her psychology professor just said it was a childhood trauma and something in her accident had triggered it and brought it back.

In her frustration the young girl had taken no notice of the creature that had been watching her from the shadows.

Marlene sighed as she crawled into bed. It was early in the morning but she had managed to somehow finish her essay. It was time to regain the little sleep that she had left before the sun rose and the world awoke.

As she lay in bed the darkness closed around her. The sound of her heart beating was the only noise to break the silence. It was really quite eerie in a way.

The thumping of feat outside her door made her heart race. It sounded as if someone paced the hall. She listened intently, and then it was gone. It must have just been Jessica for a glass of water, she thought as she lay back down once more.

In the waking of the night and the sleeping of the day
You can garantee nothing shall chase your feers away.

Marlene bolted upright. Where had that come from? Was she dreaming? She figured it must be another trick of the dark. Sighing she once again lay down trying for another moment or two of sleep.

You cannot pass me for a dream.
I know you.
I see you.
Every fear, every thought,
they are mine as they are yours

"Who are you? Why must you bother me so?" Marlene's voice cracked. She was scared by now. This was was really starting to creep her out. "Jessica, if you're doing this is really not very funny."

What's wrong Marlene? Scared?
You should know me well by now.
We are friends you and I
Friends since childhood.
We know one another you and I.

"This really isn't funny anymore.. Please stop!" She was begining to shake from fear. "Show yourself!"

You shall know me in time...

The room was quiet for a few minutes. Marlene listened in silence fearing that the voice would come back. Great, just great, she was going insane now. Imagining seeing things and now voices. She sighed and pulled the covers over. She reached for her stuffed bear who, just recently, she had begun to sleep with. Yes it was childish but it did offer her some comfort. In grabbing for the bear she grabbed something hard and cool to the touch. Quickly she turned on the bedside lamp in order to more closely examine it. In her hands she held a small mask.

Marlene yawned as she pulled her robe tighter around her. She walked over to the large table and sat down. A gallon of milk and a box of cookie crisp sat on the table. A few feet away Jessica busied herself in the kitchen, pouring two glasses of orange juice. She then made her way over to the table and set them down as Marlene began to pour herself a bowl of cereal.

The two of them sat in silence for a few minutes before Marlene spoke. "You know, you really shouldn't play tricks on me like that at night."

Jessica looked at her, confusian plain on her face. "What are you talking about? I slept all night long."

Marlene set her spoon in her bowl and stopped eating for a moment. "What do mean you slept all night long? You were pacing outside my door for a while and then you made creepy noises and started talking to me."

"Are you sure you weren't dreaming? Maybe you should get something for that.." Jessica replied. She was becoming rather concerned for her friend. Lately she had seemed rather odd and had been losing sleep.

"I was awake, I know I was. So if it wasn't you then who was it?" Marlene snapped. She hated being told when she was lying. No, what had happened last night wasn't a dream. She had definately been awake, and then there was the mask. Oh, the mask! "I can prove it to you," She said to Jessica. "I'll be right back."

Breakfast completely forgotten, she ran upstairs to her room. Marlene rushed over to her nightstand and opened the drawer. The mask was not there. Where was it? Last night she had placed it right in this drawer so that she would not have to look at it. She sighed, maybe Jessica was right and it had all just been a dream.Marlene closed the drawer and sat on the edge of her bed. Everything had seemed so real. The mask had been hard and cool to the touch and she had sweated from fear.

As she began to stand up and head back to breakfast, she heard a faint laughter. Oh no, not again. Maybe she should get some pills. She stood up and walked to the door but as she turned the knob it would not open. Once again she heard the faint cackling of another nearby. No, this was not her imagination. "Who are you?" She cried. "Why won't you leave me alone."

Namless I am and Nameless shall I remain
Are you scared yet?
Or are you insane?

The voice cackled again and Marlene could now tell that it was female. She tried even harder to open the door but it was locked as if from the outside and it would not budge. She did not like this. She tried shouting for Jessica, hoping that the other girl would hear her and come up to help.

She cannot hear you
You and I alone exist here
Only we can enter this realm
Call as you like
Cry as you will
Come, she never will

Marlene collapsed to the floor sobbing. "Why won't you leave me alone?" She sobbed. "Why must you torment me so?"

You created me Marlene
I can only exist within your mind

There was silence and then she could hear faint footsteps on the stairs. Marlene continued sobbing as Jessica opened the door. "Are you ok?" She asked. "I thought I heard voices so I came to check on you."

She tried to speak but nothing could come out but more sobbs. Jessica rushed over and hugged her. After a few moments Marlene was able to calm down a little. "I'm ok, really." She said. "I just, oh I don't know, I guess I've just been overwhelmed lately. Mabye a late morning nap will do me some good."

Jessica looked at her, unsure if she should believe her. "Are you sure?" She asked. "Do you want to finish breakfast first?"

Marlene shook her head no and climbed into bed as Jessica walked out and shut the door behind her. As she drifted off to sleep she could once again hear laughter.
