Mike Awesome passes away Written: February 19, 2007WWE is saddened by news of the passing of Mike Alfonso, better known to wrestling fans as Mike Awesome. He was 42.
Mike Awesome's first major exposure came overseas, where he became one of the Japan's top stars. Awesome would eventually become a star and champion in America while wrestling for Extreme Championship Wrestling. Following his successful run in ECW, Awesome spent time working in WCW and later WWE before retiring to his native Tampa, Fla.
While in ECW, Awesome was a two-time World Champion and Tag Team Champion. His matches with Masato Tanaka, including a show-stealer at One Night Stand in 2005 were among the most memorable in ECW history.
Seems like WWE doesn't want to say what killed Awesome..
He was WAY too young to go! sad

I bet Hulk Hogan is PISSED OFF about all this
I mean Big guys that could fly always (to me) were the coolest thing in the world (at least some of them...Samoa Joe aggravates me). I mean I always thought that since Big Mike (I used to call him) could do some of the stuff he could do then it'd be WAY easy for me. But what really disappoints me is HOW he went, he didn't have to do that, he could have worked indy, since there are more of those out, but f**k man! I won't get mad about it though, I'll miss him though and I bet a lot of the ECW original fans will too.

Yea, I do miss him, and I honestly feel that the WWE missed the boat when it came to keeping him around. He was a strong powerhouse, and could make anyone look damn good.
Favorite matches he had where the on and off again series he had with Masato Tanaka. Good God. The first One Night Stand, they stole the show.
Yes, he had the stigma that he was a defector in the world of wrestling because of the way he left ECW, but he was justified in that he wasn't getting paid. Also, if you think about that, he has a share of history in the annals of wrestling. Himself, a WCW guy, wrestling Tazz, a WWE guy for the ECW heavyweight title?
