Chapter One
The Girl in the Black Trench Coat

Our story begins in the deep abyss of underground Mezso where things of forgotten lie. Here was one lone girl of about 14 dressed in a midnight black trench coat, her signature clothing item. She was looking for a rare jewel, the Jewel of the Forgotten. The Jewel of the Forgotten is rather interesting. It is not a gem of one color, like most, but a gem of many for it stores the memories of the Forgotten. It is said that the one who holds the Jewel will have the power to unleash these memories on the world and reek havoc, or to guide the world into a better, peaceful future. That, however, depends on the goodness of the person’s heart.
The girl had stopped in the middle of an old town square. The brownish-gray buildings that surrounded her were deteriorating into piles of sewage covered cement chunks. There was something on the ground in front of the girl’s feet that was as black as obsidian. Pulling out a magnify glass, she bent down to inspect. A mischievous smirk played a-crossed her face. “I found it.” she whispered to herself.

Our next characters may be found conversing in the lobby of a gigantic mansion of glorious decoration and furniture. In front of the black haired boy was a man with fraying white hair in a lab coat who was pacing. “Boy!” he barked. “We need to find it before she does.”
“Look, who is she?” The boy asked for the billionth time.
“Who is she!” The professor threw is hands in the air. “She is the essence of all evil. She is the very person who shouldn’t have the Jewel. The very person who I hope you will never have to face!”
“That still doesn’t explain much. Look, uncle,” The boy leaned against the door frame in a cool, casual way, “You want me to assassinate her, yes? Then tell me what the bloody hell she looks like!”
“Ater...come here.” The professor gestured to his nephew to follow him into his lab. The old man walked behind his mahogany desk, opened a draw, and pulled out a picture. “This,” he said while placing the picture on the desk, “is her.”
Ater leaned over and stared at the picture. “A girl in a black trench coat, how hard should that be? Not many people were trench coats now-a-days.” He slowly picked up the picture. Something had caught his attention. As he looked closer at the girls eyes, he realized one was rose red and the other was raven black. “Uncle?” Ater whispered
“Yes, my dear boy?” The professor was examining one of his test tubes filled with green, puffy slime.
“She has the eyes of the Forgotten.”
“Hmm? Oh, yes. I forgot to mention she’s a Forgotten.”
“You expect me to kill a Forgotten!?”
“Yes.”
Ater looked down at the ground in hatred. “I will do what you command.”

Chapter Two
A Failed Attempt

Lumen sat on the roof of a gray rundown shack. At first glance, it looked like nothing of importance. But, actually, the small abode was covering the entrance to her layer. She looked up when a raindrop fell onto her head. The sky was thick with dreary, gray rain clouds that were ready to weep at any moment. Her left hand shifted in its place as she felt the presences of someone near her. If they are one of my enemies, she thought, I can’t let them get the Jewel.
She jumped down and ran into the shack. It was pitch black, but she could faintly see the outline of a pole in the corner. As she slid down it, she could have sworn she heard faint footsteps. They seemed to be searching for the entrance into the layer. Yes, they are an enemy. They are looking for me.
“Lumen! Thank goodness. I feared the worse.” A man of about 21 was waiting for her at the bottom. He was tall with a tan complexion, shaggy auburn hair, and the deepest looking chocolate eyes that were filled with intelligence beyond that of normal human years.
“Amor, you worry too much.” Lumen gave him a warm smile.
“Did you get it?”
“Of course I did.”
“Can I see it?”
“Not just yet. I sense an intruder.”
“An intruder! Princess Lumen, you must hide.”
Lumen sighed.
“Princess I–“
”Shut up! I can take care of the intruder myself.”
“But–“
”No buts!”
Amor’s eyes were shining with determination. He would not leave her side, but he slowly gave in and disappeared into the surrounding shadows. Lumen watched as he did incase the intruder attacked him first. Then, she went to a silver door off to the side for she could hear footsteps emitting from behind it. Slowly, steadily, she opened the door and jumped back. “Come out and play.” She said into the dark abyss that the door was holding.
A black shadow rushed out of the door at her. Lumen ducked, barely avoiding it. It turned around and darted here and there as to confuse her. The intruder moves with such speed. She thought. This should prove to be fun.
Her left hand emerged from her pocket holding a black Colt revolver with silver detailing. Just as she was about to shoot at the thing, she felt a knife in her left shoulder. Her arm got warm as the blood trickled down the inside of her coat. The shadow took her distraction to its advantage and pinned her against the wall. “My name is Triple A, and I am the one who will send you to your Maker.” It whispered in her ear. Now that it was in the light, Lumen could see that her attacker was a boy of about 16 with black hair and intriguing emerald eyes.
“Well, if you are going to introduce me to my maker, why haven’t you done it already?” Lumen got a devious smirk on her face.
“Don’t question me.” The boy spat back.
“If you were a true assassin, I would be dead already.”
“Why you–“ Triple A held up his dueling sword and swung down only to stop within mere centimeters of her neck. “I. . .can’t.” He dropped his weapon and let go of Lumen.
“Fool.” Raising her gun, she knocked out Triple A with the butt of it. She winced as the pain of her wound finally reached her senses and feel to her knees next to Triple A.
“Princess!” Amor came running out from the shadows. “Let me tend to your wound.”
“I’ll do it myself.” Lumen said through gritted teeth.
“Princess, it is my duty to tend to your–“
”I said I’ll do it myself!” She barked as she fell back against Amor.
“Please Princess. It is my duty.”
“Whatever.”
Amor carefully took off her coat and put it aside for cleaning later. Then, he pulled out some bandages, scissors, needle, and thread. He carefully cut off Lumen’s sleeve, then threaded the needle. “This will only hurt for a bit.” Then, with the skills of a professional surgeon, he stitched her wound back together. Finally, he cut off about four feet of bandage and wrapped her shoulder up with perfect grace. “See Princess, that wasn’t so bad.”
“I guess not. I still could have done it myself.” She scolded.
Amor smiled while shaking his head. “So, who is this young man?”
“Ater Atra Atrum. He’s Professor Atrum’s nephew and was sent to assassinate me.”
“Then he must be killed.”
“No.”
“Princess, he is to be killed. We do not want him to try again. Next time, he could succeed. He is the first one to actually harm you.”
“He cannot be killed.”
“Are you trying to commit suicide! What is your reason for not killing him?!”
“He is to become the next Forgotten.” Lumen whispered.
“Please forgive me for yelling, Princess.” Amor bowed down before her.
“Amor, how many times do I have to tell you that you do not have to bow down before me? I do not consider you in that way. You are as much as a prince as I am a princess.”
“Lumen...” He whispered.
“Never mind. I said too much.” Lumen looked away, blushing. “Thank you. I don’t know what I’d do without you Amor.”

A few hours later, Ater woke up. He had been sleeping in a four-poster bed of red silk with black pillows as soft as a kitten’s fur. The curtains seemed to be made of spider webs for they were thin, delicate and had a shimmering silver color to them. Sitting up, he looked around at his surroundings. He seemed to be in a medieval bed chamber. The walls were made of gray stones and the lighting was that of torches. He squinted through the dusk like atmosphere and saw the outline of the girl he was suppose to have assassinated.
“It’s about time you woke up.” She said coolly.
“You’re the one who knocked me out.” He spat back.
“Sorry.”
“No you’re not.”
“It’s more of a maybe sorry really.”
Ater swung his legs to the side to realize he wasn’t wearing an clothes. He quickly swung his legs back onto the bed and held the covers up to his chin. “Where the bloody hell are my clothes!”
“Amor’s washing them.”
“Oh. Why did you spare my life?”
“Because.”
Ater could tell he probably wouldn’t get any further than ‘because’ with this girl. Sighing, he relaxed a bit and let the covers drop into his lap. Now, his bare chest was exposed and it looked like he had been through loads of training. Lumen couldn’t help but look for just a few seconds. Then, her eyes locked with his. Her almost demanding stare made Ater cringe.
“I’m–“
”Ater Atra Atrum.”
“How do you know that?”
“Lumen.”
“Lumen?”
“That’s my name.” She glanced at the door making it seem like she had better things to do and wanted to leave. Looking back at Ater, she nodded to him. Then, she proceeded out the door.
As Lumen walked down the hall, she pulled a package out of her right coat pocket. She pulled on one end of the string and watched it unwrap and let the string fall to the ground. In the middle of her palm siting placidly on the paper was an obsidian colored jewel. When the light hit it, it glowed a plethora of colors of all different tones and hues. “Amazing.” She whispered to herself. “All of the memories inside this small jewel.”
“Princess?” Amor was standing at the end of the hall with Ater’s clothes slung over his shoulder. He strolled up to Lumen.
“Isn’t it beautiful Amor?” She held the Jewel up to him.
He turned his face away. “It is a sight for only royalty to behold.”
“I already told you, I think you are as much as a prince–“
”Do not say such things.” Amor walked passed her and down the Ater’s room where he disappeared behind the door.

“Where is that damned boy!” Professor Atrum shouted to his domed ceiling. He was pacing in his lab thinking of what could have happened to his nephew.
“Maybe he was entranced by Lumen.” Said a silky sweet voice from the corner. The owner of the voice was that of a very attractive female. She was very curvy, had long black hair, and even though her eyes were two different colors, they could still seduce any man.
“You do not know my nephew, Solarous.” The Professor fixed her with an icy stare.
“If he’s anything like you,” Solarous stood up and wrapped her arms around him, “then I know him.”
“He is nothing like me, my dear. He would never fall in love with a Forgotten. I trained him.”
“I bet you did.” She gave him a melting smile and a light kiss on the lips, leaving him wanting more. “I must be off.”
“But–“
”I’m sorry. But, I have an old friend to check up on.” Solarous walked over to the bay window. It looked out upon the ocean that today was lackluster in color for the clouds wanted to weep again. Down in the black waters was a small boat awaiting her. She opened the window, turned around, blew the Professor a kiss, then jumped out the window onto the little boat.
“She always manages to slip out of my clutches.” The Professor said to himself. “I really do wonder what has happened to the hooligan nephew of mine.” Then, he went back to his favorite pass time: pacing.

Ater was staring at the silver door he had come through. When he opened it, all he could see was a black abyss. He closed it again, then re-opened it. This time, it was a view of an ocean splashing against seaweed covered rocks. A light wind carried the mist over to him. He closed it again. This time, he waited a few seconds before he opened it again. Now it opened up to a medieval country side with knights in shining armor galloping across it. He closed it again for the last time.
“Having fun?” Lumen asked from the shadows.
Ater turned around quickly, knife at the ready.
“There’s no need for that. You, Amor, and I are the only ones here.”
Ater nodded and put the knife away. “So, how do I get out of this bloody place?”
“You have to know where you want to go. Then, the door will open for you.”
“Huh?”
“Your heart has to know exactly were it wants to go.” Lumen walked off into the shadows again.
“My heart?” Ater whispered to himself. He put his fist on his chest right where one’s heart is.
