today, i went to see phantom performed at a small local theater. my mom bought the tickets, and she assumed it would be alw. of course, it wasn't. there were some odd plot twists and combined characters. raoul was called phillipe instead, the opera's previous owner was combined with the persian who, oddly enough, was erik's father as well eek . and they sugar-coated his childhood to the max. all they could talk about was how his mother loved him so much and could see nothing at all wrong with him. i thought that was sweet, but highly unrealistic. this version was not familiar to me at all until one line caught my attention. it was during a scene where erik is about to kill carlotta, and he says something like: "madame, i have never heard a voice quite like yours... not even in a barnyard" i know that line has been mentioned in a thread around here somewhere, so i'm wondering if they stole it or if it's from the same version.
is any of this sounding familiar to anyone???

Sporky, the musical you saw was Phantom: The Musical by, as everyone has said, Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit. It actually pre-dates the ALW version by several years. It's the one the 1991 miniseries was based off of.
You're really lucky for having seen it, actually. It's closed off-broadway and it's almost never performed, except in the odd local production.

And then there was the TV movie version, with Charles Dance, albeit sans the music.

I think she's referring to the fact that Sporky had expected to go to the ALW musical.
I have to strongly disagree. She is quite lucky to have seen it, considering the rarity of the performance.

I would've squealed if I found out I was seeing The Y/K version. Hey, if it involves PotO, I'm game. XD
