The cream and violet stained wolf trotted through the underbrush of the surrounding woods. Her cream form was painted black and white as it drifed in and out of the shadows of the forest. The moon was full and poured its milky light on to everything in its wake. Ravii much preferred the full moon to the new, as she could actually see what lay before her.

A beautiful night, really, despite its eerie appearance. A mist was brewing off the surrounding lake and river, and the gentle fog was entangling the woods in a tender embrace. Only Ravii's movement disturbed the drifting mist, the fine particles pressing aside as she passed like a drawn curtain.

Her senses were alert as she traveled - one never knew whom they might run in to during the dead of night. But a tickle in her throat and a craving for water had sent her on such a journey. Thankfully, the river and lake weren't a long trot from where she'd been resting.

Occam wandered the night alone, something he had done every day and night for months now. It was a blessing to be alone. To be away . . .

Roughly shaking his head, he angled towards the smell of water, though he didn't need the scent to find it; these woods were his domain. He knew every nook and cranny, and how to get to all of them deaf, nose blind, and sightless.

Through a break in the trees, he could see the lake stretching out before him, the opposite shore lost beneath the bright, silvery gaze of the full moon shining off of the glass smooth water. It was breathtaking and beautiful, to most creatures. To him, it was hell.

Squinting his ice blue eyes at the blinding glare, he trotted casually down to the water's edge, dipping his head to lap at the freezing water. The rest of the lake was frozen fast, but here a small lick of water remained unfrozen, warmed by an underground spring.

When his thirst was quenched, he shook himself, than lay in a bare patch of sand, slightly sunken into the ground.

Curling his tail over his face, he became all but invisible just as the sound of another wolf reached his ears.

Ravii drifted like a phantom as she broke through the evenings mist and appeared at the lakeside. The wolf paused for a moment, glancing this way and that as she investigated her surroundings. Despite the eerie beauty of the evening, the mist that rolled off the lake could be used as much as beauty as a hiding place. Sniffing the air, she untangled and read the scents that should could before cautiously approaching.

Cream form stained white from the moonbeams, Ravii was about two hundred feet from were Occam lay. The way her body language was written, she knew that others had been there before, if they weren't in the area. But without a breeze, the wind all but dead, she was left on sight and sound. Violet ears pricked forward, the she-wolf made it to the lakes edge before lowering her head to drink.

Her eyes, of course, focused on the world around her, as her ears swiveled this way and that. She'd been alone long enough to be cautious anywhere she went. One never knew who could be hiding where, and not every wolf one stumbeled upon was friendly or kind. Yes, Ravii had heard whispers of manipulative sorts, of those cruel enough to abandon their young or murder others without due cause.

Finishing her drink, Ravii paused, looking through the mist. Instinct (or perhaps paranoia?) told her that she wasn't necessarily alone. Still as stone, she waited, nose sniffing the air, trying to decide whether or not it was safe to move. It was just so hard to see with the growing mist and fog.

Occam suppressed a growl, watching her beneath lowered lids. Well, this was turning out to be a wonderful night. First, he was blinded by the moon, and now there was another wolf pretty much stepping in the foot prints he'd left on the sand.

Though she was a pretty wolf, she also looked like the sister to the female that had tortured him for months.

Rage started bubbling in his chest, a growl building in his throat. He knew he should run before he accidentally hurt her, but he couldn't get his legs to obey him. It was if they suddenly had a mind of their own, and they had decided to move him towards her, silent as a phantom through the mists.

Whatever had caused Ravii to pause, her ears pricked forward at the sound. Though Occam might be silent, Ravii's instincts and senses began to warn her. Her ears pricked at two sounds - the very gentle crunching of sand beneath weight, as well as what sounded like a very faint snarl. * Also, the fog and mist that had coated the lakefront and sand dunes had begun to brush to the side, as if something - or someone - were moving it. Occam.

Uncertain whether she run or stay, Ravii chose the former. She kept her tail raised, and stood her ground with confidence, though every now and then her ears did flick back with uncertainty. The fur around her neck raised ever so slightly - a defensive action - as she prepared for what might come.

"Hello? Who's there?" She asked softly, eyes focusing on the source of the drifting mist. Eyes searching through the fog, Occam's dark fur didn't blend well with the shine of night and the pale mist of clouds. A dark form seemed to be approaching. . . .

But be it friend or foe, she knew not. A better half of Ravii warned her that tonight caution was best put forward, there was something in the air that seemed . . . tense and out of sorts. But for whatever reason - perhaps being home and meeting so many kind wolves had skewed her judgements - the female stayed.

Part of Ravii was tired of being pushed around all her life. Where she stood was neutral ground and she had every right to get a drink in peace.

*ignore that if he isn't really growling - I wasn't sure if you meant a growl had begun and was building in volume in his throat, or if a growl was merely being prepared to begin. *laughs and hopes that makes sense* Sorry, I confuse easily.

((No problem. He was growling, so it's all good XD))

Something snapped. He froze, staring blankly ahead. What was he doing? Hating the blackouts that plagued him whenever his anger took over, he shook his head vigorously, clearing the mist from his thoughts, and stirring it even more around him, so that he saw her again.

She stood tall, and without fear, but he smelled her unease on the breath of wind that stirred softly around them. Though she reminded him of painful memories, he could now see the differences between her and Kazila.

Even so, he turned and started walking in the other direction.

Ravii was still uncertain what to do. As the mist shook free, she had a better idea of who it was she'd stumbeled upon. Her blue eyes caught sight of ebony fur, as well as a few lighter markings. The pale moonlight and night washed away the exact hue. It looked . . . bright. Or at least brighter than the rest of him.

Ears flicking back a bit, still on edge about what to do, Ravii was faced with a choice. Did she break the silence of the night and speak? Or did she let him go? Confused, mostly, but the encounter - she'd been prepared for a fight - the amicable female didn't know how to take his retreat.

She took a cautious step forward, not necessarily after him, but away from the lake edge and more on the sandy beach. "I'm sorry if I disturbed you," she apologized, a little whine in her throat. The sweet natured female couldn't have him walk off without her at least expressing her wishes. It surely hadn't been her intention to piss off the locals.

"Have a good eve. . ." She all but whispered, tail dropping from its defensive stance to a more natural position.

Such a strange encounter, this night. Blue eyes watched the wolf disappear in the mist.

((Eek - such a sweet one! xP *can't wait to get another wolf with, perhaps, a bit of bite* Don't get her wrong thogh, she knows how to snarl when she has to. But she's always been sunshiney-good natured, even as a pup! ))

((She's sweet! I wanna snuggle her XD))

Occam's ears swiveled back, laying against his skull. He let out a deep sigh, unable to simply walk rudely away after she had spoken. Looking over his shoulder at her with one ice blue eye, he dipped his head.

"You did not disturb me, wolfess," he murmured, his voice rich and husky. "Simply ignore me; I am nothing but an old grouch wondering on his lonely way."

His tail gave a brief wag, and he wanted to keep walking, but something was holding him back. Why didn't he just want to vanish into the mists, like he'd done countless times before? Unable to answer that question, he sat on his haunches, staring back at her.

Finally, he asked, "What is your name?"

Ravii's grape-stained ears perked forward, and the light in her eyes that had dimmed upon his retreat brightened at his words. Her tail tip, which had begun to wag in an almost pup-like earnest fashion, paused as her mind comprehended what he asked of her.

"Ignore you?" She repeated, practically in shock. An old grouch. . .? "Oh no," she repeated, gentle words sincere, "I couldn't do that, I'm afraid, even . . . even at your request."

The female hesitated, before ducking her head in an almost coy fashion. She didn't want to upset Occam further, much less scare him off or cause him undue agression. "Even old grouches, I'm afraid, deserve a kind word . . . OR" she added hastily, giving him a small smile, "At the very least silent acknowledgement."

No, Ravii couldn't pretend that he was no one to notice. Her sweet nature just didn't allow for such thoughts, for such drear. Even the most miserable and loathesome of wolves deserved some sort of credit. . . . . for something or other.

Thusly, Occam was stuck with Ravii for a moment or two further. Ears falling back against her head, uncertainty still wavering upon her breath, she took another careful step forward. Again, not so much closer as just to get within a settled distance away from Occam. Enough so he didn't have to keep craning his neck over his shoulder to see her.

"I'm Ravii," the shewolf answered gently, eyes still burning in good light thanks to Occam's earlier reassurance. "And may I inquire the same?"

Some wolves were touchy - she wanted to be perfectly clear that she wouldn't be offended and wasn't demanding a response. Just a simple question, though her interest (as were all her words) were sincere.

One ear flicked back, and he seemed unsure of what to do. He had distanced himself from decent and kind-hearted wolves for a reason; he always managed to screw up their lives.

"Well . . . my name is . . . " He paused, still reluctant to tell her. It was best if he just turned around and walked away into the darkness, letting her go on her merry way. It would keep her safe. "Occam . . . " the dark furred wolf murmured at last, looking out over the lake. "You may call me Occam."

Always awkward in a situation such as this, his paws twitched, digging slightly into the snow. Even when he looked at her, he wasn't really looking at her. His blue eyes were always focused somewhere else. "What brings you out here at this time of night?"

Ravii could still sense the tension in the air, Occam's awkwardness and her own caution. It wrapped around the pair as delicately as the mist and moonlight, and Ravii was uncertain on what to do next. She didn't want the dark furred male to feel obligated by her presence, not in the least.

Had she done wrong by speaking to him?

Her violet ears seemed to fall further back on her head, though her azure gaze was still only on Occam. "Occam," she spoke his name, a little smile crossing her featureas she tested it out. "It is a pleasure," she greeted cordially, the tip of her tail wagging in confirmation. A new acquaintence, but one she felt she had to be extra delicate around. His earlier, aggressive display had starteled her enough to tip-toe lightly around him.

Ravii didn't want to further upset him.

The cream female was delighted, nonetheless, that he continued the conversation. The wolf could have ended with his name and continued on his way, but he hadn't! In fact, he asked her a question. The female felt a smidge more relief, and her gentle words became more natural, slowly losing the stain of shy uncertainty.

"Oh," Ravii replied with a small laugh, "a bit of dehydration mostly, though sleep seems to be beyond my reach this night." She crinkleed her nose in slightly annoyance, before shaking it off and offering Occam another radiant smile. "And what of you. . .? It's not often I find company this late." A moments pause, before she quickly added, "If it's not prying too much, that is."

Her smile made something inside of him quiver; he realized it was his heart a few moments later, and the feeling astounded him. Hadn't it been shattered? Ruined beyond any feeling and function aside from keeping him alive?

Dipping his head, he stared at the ground. This new feeling was slightly shocking, and he had to take a moment to catch his breath. Well, maybe it wasn't new, but it had been so long since he'd felt anything.

"I often avoid sleep. It is not my friend as of late." When he finally thought he had himself under control, he looked up again, finally meeting her gaze.

She had beautiful eyes; a blue so pure, it rivaled the depths of a mountain lake.

Before he knew it, he was drowning . . .

At the black furred wolf's words, the cream and violet splashed wolfess tilted her head ever so delicately. He . . . avoided sleep? Thoughts and wonders flipped through her mind like channels on a station; did he suffer nightmares or insomnia? Did stress and anxiety follow his pawprints like lurking shadows, or perhaps his mind merely worked overtime and didn't bother to settle?

Whatever the reason, Ravii gave a small shake of her head and a very soft whine in the back of her throat. "Well, may you find good company in those that are awake," she voiced, congenial nature apparant. "And may sleep and dreams learn better manners."

Shaking out her coat, she looked back upon her moonlit counterpart. Moment by moment, minute by minute she forgot about his earlier aggression. Ravii couldn't completely forget - if only because one had to execute caution - but she'd long since forgiven him for his actions.

It was dark out, and if she'd starteled him upon her approach that was no fault of his own.

A glance over at the misting lake, before her blue eyes brightened underneath the moon. "You know," she explained with a small laugh," by choice or not you picked one of the best places to be. I hear that water can sooth the soul and calm ones nerves - perhaps, with such magic, it may help ease your dreams."

She was too optimistic not to believe. Nothing in life left permanent scars - there were always cures for ailments, in one form or another. Some found her constant positivity an annoyance, but she couldn't just sit there and not hope for Occam. It was a shame sleep and he weren't getting along, but perhaps the water would help sow some pleasantries for the wolf.

"It is my favorite place to be." She added, looking fondly over her shoulder at the lake. Any source of water was a friend to the shewolf. It washed clean her wounds and soothed her heart and mind. Rainstorms energized her spirits, while the river entertained her with its stories.

Perhaps she was wrong to be so open and share her love with others. But at least Occam would know - even if he chose to ignore her words and ideas, then so be it. But it would then be his choice, and not one of Ravii's assumptions.

Fascinated by the wolfess before him, Occam could only watch her; the lithe way she moved, the way her eyes seemed to glow as she stared out over the glassy water . . .

"Perhaps . . . perhaps it might help. I am more than willing to try," he added softly, turning his own gaze to the lake. He was so exhausted; if there was a chance the water could ease his mind and allow him to rest in peace, than he would take that chance. But he didn't want to stay here alone.

Walking slowly, he sniffed along the water's edge, searching for the right spot. Finding a dry patch of moss very close to the water, he spun around in a circle before curling up with a smile sigh, one paw just barely touching the water. Its coolness seeped into him very quickly, but instead of chilling him, it relaxed him.

Maybe Ravii was right; maybe the water did hold magic.

Glancing over at her, he smiled softly. "It feels good." What he didn't voice was the request on the tip of his tongue.

Could you stay with me, for a little bit? After all, they had only just met, and not on the best of terms, thanks to him. Why would she waste her time with him any more than she had to?

Blue eyes watched as Occam agreed to test out the spirits of the water. Oh, how Ravii could only hope it might ease his worries and fears. No matter what haunted him, no matter what made war with his good dreams, the wolfess could only hope that the gentle river and lake would keep such things subdued.

It worked with her, but then again, every wolf was different. Just because she adored the water it didn't mean that Occam would as well. But at least he'd try.

Tail tip wagging, Ravii turned to face him, trotting after him but making sure she kept a respectable distance. Her smile grew as she watched him pick out a spot to curl up, though she held her breath as she waited to see the results.

Would he stay? Or might he run and disappear within the evenings mist?

Time slowed, almost stopped, until Occam gave his quiet voiced approval.

"It feels good."

A gentle laugh, and she herself edged closer to Occam and the waters edge. "I'm delighted!" And she genuinely meant it. "There is very little the water can't heal," Ravii explained, reaching over with her closest paw to dabble it lightly upon the cool surface. Her tail wagged slowly, but happily, as she turned her bright eyes back on the wolf.

"Give it a little time, and perhaps you too will be lulled in to sweet dreams." Setting herself down upon her haunches on the shore, not far from the heart-stained male, she curled her wagging tail politely about her paws.

Falling silent, allowing the natural sounds of the lake and river to overcome them, Ravii basked in the moonlight and stared happily over the misting lake. She wasn't going anywhere anytime soon. Not until Occam slept soundly, or asked her to be away.
