Cubbish laughter echoed, breaking through what was an otherwise peaceful day under the prideland sun, a pleasant day cooled by a gentle breeze. Peaceful that is to anyone but the black and white cub and anyone who happened to be nearby.
He was crouched among the short grass, lost in a cloud of dust, tail flicking happily held above his hind end. From a distance one may have wondered what he was up to, but on closer inspection it became clear that he was digging, clawing through the earth, pausing every few moments to sniff at the ground as if searching for something. Whatever he was hunting was a mystery to all but himself and the small pup nearby.
Another echo of laughter.
"Totoro! Watch where your throwing that!"-------------------------- A few steps away, barely visible amid the dust and flying earth, a small maned wolf dug along side his friend, tail wagging furiously. His nose buried in the earth, excited barks muffled, he dug fervently, determined to unearth whatever he and the cub had found.
So engrossed in his task, the small wolf hadn't been paying attention to the direction he was digging. In the excited energy of a puppy, he had managed to turn himself away from Shin, flinging the earth he dug at the dark cub.
Realizing his mistake, Totoro barked and wagged his tail at his friend before returning to his dig. Whatever he was after must have been very interesting.

Sheshe'kani never thought she'd be jealous that someone was stealing her brother's time until Totoro came into the picture.
It wasn't that she disliked the canine, she thought he was cute and she was sure that if not for her brother's influence he would be a very nice, friendly addition to the family (not that he wasn't), but because he -was- with Shin'jougen it usually spelled trouble for her.
Still, the time he spent with his friend could have maybe been spent with her, maybe bridging the gap they seemed to have since they were born. As much as they bickered, she would have preferred if they got along, much more. He didn't even have to change, Kani just wished that he wouldn't insist on playing pranks on her, and likewise she was trying harder not to make grief for him. Especially now that he had backup. :/
The tan and black bundle of fur quitely approached her brothers, tenatively.
"Hey guys.... what're you lookin' for?" She asked, blinking curiously.

The dark cub snorted at the earth, sneezing a muzzle full of dirt, sand, and grass. His black pelt was tarnished, earth ground into his fur, making him look almost brown in color. His front end had all but disappeared, hidden by the ditch he had dug and the pile of dirt left in his wake.
A familiar voice was enough to pause his digging for, ears flicking, his head lifted enough to peer over his shoulder and spot his sister's form. He looked at her a moment, then toward Totoro, then over his other shoulder. Assured that neither parent had accompanied her, Shin returned to his digging, flinging a bit of dirt in her general direction; perhaps enough to startle her, but not meant to hit her.
"None of your business. What do you want, Kani?"
He would have stuck his tongue out at her, but he had already learned the follies of doing such while in the middle of a pile of dirt.------------------------- Being a canine, Totoro was a far more accomplished digger than his cubbish friend, consumed by his mountain of dirt and gaping trench. The only indication he was there at all was the flying dirt, a wagging tail, and the occasional yip. He seemed quite content, and if left alone it was possible he may have continued to dig all day.
But a young voice his ears, and the young pup immediately stopped, leaping from his hole and bounding to Kani with a happy bag and a wagging tail. Excitedly, he circled the tan cub several times before he pounced her, licking her happily, a friendly puppy greeting his family.

Her ears rocked downward to her skull for a moment in general disappointment, but she wouldn't be deterred.
As a bit of dirt flew her way she did in fact startle with a squeak of surprise, jumping back in fear that it would get in her eyes. Oh she'd had strange things get in her eye before, it stung something awful, she didn't want to think about what having dirt in her eyes would feel like, and imagined it would be quite impossible to get rid of it if it did.
"Well... I just wanted to see if you guys might... play with me." She replied, very audibly uncertain and doubtful that he'd accept the invitation. She pawed at the ground nervously while she waited. Shin didn't tend to like the games she did, but if he'd accept then she'd be willing to try something different that he liked. When Totoro pounced on her, however, Sheshe's gaze quickly shifted and head swiveled to see the incoming, mud-gray and brown bundle flying her way. She gave a startled squeak again and fell over sideways, but instead of protesting as she usually did (when Shin coerced the puppy to slobber all over her, or tear up her few little posessions), she squealed with delight and laughter, happy to be greeted in such a friendly manner.
Her light hearted giggles interrupted the sound of digging as she squirmed under the pup's greeting.
"Totoro! I already had a bath today!" She laughed, grinning widely, but did return the greeting with a purr, bumping her head against his shoulder. "At least someone's happy to see me." She smiled.

Paws stilled, orange eyes narrowed as he looked over his shoulder, snorting a muttered 'traitor' in the direction of the canine.
"Why would we wanna play with a girl?"
It wasn't that Shin didn't like his sister, truth was he actually cared deeply for her. Despite the teasing, arguing, and the general torment they inflicted on each other and their parents; the cubs were first and foremost siblings, and though he would never admit it, Shin'Jougen did love his sister.
But they were so different, polar opposites in almost every way it seemed, and she annoyed him so. Well okay, maybe she didn't annoy him -that- much, but she did like to butt in when he wanted to be left alone, or ruin his games by jumping in when things were just fine without her. And to make things worse, she was a girl...bleh. -------------------------------
Totoro, however, was not nearly so discriminating as his friend. To the young canine, Shin and Kani were his family, and being the puppy that he was, loved them both. And while Shin would always be his best friend, he loved his 'sister' as well and was more than happy to play with them both.
Tail ever wagging, he turned for a moment to stick his tongue out at Shin, then bounded around Kani again, licking her again despite her objections. He liked this game, barking excitedly and play bowing at the tan cub before bounding at her again.

"You play with momma!" She accused, pouting at his refusal. Well! If he was really gonna be -that- way about it maybe she'd just... go on an adventure without him!
It was sad, but at times Kani became so frustrated with her brother that even she tended to forget that they were bonded by blood, and often felt like he truely disliked her just for being a sister instead of a brother.
"I thought maybe we could try to have our own adventure like mom and dad always talk about. Mom says there's all kinds of stuff around here that we could get into..."
Like the termite mounds, though the very thought of those creepy, disgusting insects made her skin crawl under her fur. Grossness at it's worst.
It was hard for her to remain pouting when Totoro being so happy. She grinned once again and fell into a circle with him, only pausing to paw at his nose, trying to tag him when he got close enough but seeming to miss each time. It was indeed becoming a game, however sudden.

And here she was again, ruining his game and distracting -his- friend. They had been enjoying themselves just fine, hunting for the treasures buried beneath the pridelands and she had to butt in and ruin everything, stupid girl.
"Totoro! Stop it, we're supposed to be treasure hunting."
But Totoro seemed insistent on playing with Kani too, and while he thought of running her off with a flying dirt bomb, he was sure she'd tattle to their parents and then he'd be the one in trouble. Sighing, he gave in, turning from his trench and finally settling on his haunches to face the tan cub.
"Fine, what do you want to do?"
He'd better get something good for this.
------------------------------------
Enthralled with his new game, it was not until Shin's voice reaches his ears that the pup stopped, tail stilling for a brief moment, ears lowered before perking again. Why couldn't they all play together? That would make him happy, and he barked sharply at his friend to voice his opinion on the matter.
Ah, that was more like it, all three of them could play a game together. The thought filled the young pup with boundless energy, and he ran around both cubs, barking, and wagging his tail in his excitement.

"Really?? I mean..."
Kani cleared her throat, shifting to stand with a little more respectable poise, looking to one of the many little piles of dirt Shin had upturned.
"Well.... mom was telling me about the termite mounds, I thought maybe we could explore there! She said there are all kinds of tunnels underneath...?"
Her tail twitched nervously behind her, pale moon-colored eyes gazing into her brother's sun-kissed ones, waiting for the boys' answer.

One white paw dragged across the dirt, orange eyes focused on his sister as if debating her words, or maybe he was just trying to resist a 'facepaw' reaction. Dumb girl, yes really, he wouldn't have agreed if he hadn't meant really.
"We've already been there, can't you think of anything less boring to do?"
Not to mention that he had already spent the day digging holes. Really if he wanted to play in the dirt and tunnels he would have stayed where he was. Not that it was easy to think here with a noisy, excited puppy running around in circles.
"Totoro, settle down. You're making me dizzy and your gonna wear yourself out."------------------------------ It didn't seem like such an energetic canine could ever wear out, bounding around happily, paws never touching the ground for a moment before springing again. Excited barking piercing the air, certainly rousing any nearby creature from whatever nap may have in progress.
But excited as he was, he headed Shin's warning, or at least tried to. Such was doomed to familiar as he caught a glimpse of his feverishly wagging tail, something he had to catch and was soon hoping in circles in an attempt to grasp the furry appendage.

She felt a little depressed that her idea was rejected, but was determined to suceed that day now that she actually had Shin's agreement. Where else could they go, though? Where?
Her eyes roamed the lands but could find nothing of intrest. Pride Rock, the hills, the grasslands, the gorge... oh...
"Well..." Her gaze was focused elsewhere as she spoke, sounding as if she had been debating sharing this idea at all. "There's the graveyard...?"

Paws that had been shuffling in the dirt as if the dark cub just couldn't sit still suddenly fell silent, orange gaze settled fully on his sister. The graveyard? Was she serious? Of all the vast pridelands, the graveyard was the one place he had never ventured. That wasn't to say he'd never thought of it, in fact he had several times. But they had always been told not to cross the border and well, even he didn't want to tread there alone.
But should they really go there? What if they were caught? Or worse, all the stories turned out to be true? Still, it wouldn't be boring, and the idea pricked at his adventurous nature. Besides, he couldn't let his sister, a girl, think he was a coward could he.
"Alright, if you want to go to the graveyard we can go there. So long as you don't go running away like a chicken."--------------------------------- Shin was not the only one startled by Kani's suggestion, the young pup suddenly falling silent and still in his tracks. The graveyard? They couldn't go to the graveyard! No, it was dangerous there! The adults had always told them to stay away from that place and he was certain there was a good reason why.
Then he was on his paws again, barking loudly at the cubs. He didn't like this idea at all, and he couldn't let his friends, his family, go to such a dangerous place. Lacking the ability to form words they could understand, Totoro voiced his disapproval in urgent barks and yelps. He could only hope they'd listen, and if they didn't, well he'd do what he'd have to stop them.

"I won't! I'm no chicken!" Kani defended, though really, secretly she'd been hoping he might say he'd already been, and that was too dull. She was sure she could've lived without her brother's approval, now, but couldn't go back on her word anymore than he could allow her to think him a coward, even if she wouldn't call him any such thing for having the good sense to stay away from that place. Still-- he'd accepted like it was perfectly normal, which led her to believe he knew full well what they were getting into.
She disregarded poor Shin's barks, turning to head towards the shadows in the distance almost stubbornly, chin sticking out and tail lifting like a flag. She was no chicken! She'd -proove- it!

So she was serious, she really wanted to go to the graveyard, and if she didn't there was no turning back now. Well alright then, now was as good a time as any to visit the graveyard and finally settle his curiosity.
"You'd better not, or I'll never do anything with you again."
With that final warning, the young cub smirked, his gait set at a brisk trot, taking the lead from his sister, though only by a few steps. This was going to be a great adventure, even if it was with his sister, though that wasn't so bad now that he thought about it. If only Totoro would stop barking so much. What was he trying to do, wake the whole pride? --------------------------------
This was a bad idea, a very bad idea. What if they went to the graveyard and were attacked by hyenas, or worse? Bad, bad, bad!
He barked at them ferociously, circling around them until he was in their path, barking until they passed then circling them again. But they paid him no heed, why wouldn't they listen? They couldn't go in there! And if they weren't going to listen to him, then he'd go get someone they would -have- to listen to, even if it got them into trouble. That was it, he'd go get their parents, then they'd have to turn back.
