I think this was discussed awhile back in the intelligent convo thread. So Wufei and Meiran were married, right? Do you think they consummated it? Could she have been pregnant around the time of her death? I'm pretty sure the clan married her off to produce heirs. And wasn't Wufei around 14 at the time? Were they even mature enough to physically engage in sex? Mind you, let's keep this PG- 13 so no lurid stuff, ok?

IIRC, the creators said that Wu Fei and Mei Lan consumated their marriage before her death. So yes, it's possible that she was pregnant.

I haven't read this in a LONG time but didn't it Wufei say (in the manga of course) that she couldn't be pregnant? That they played cards during their honeymoon?

I recall seeing somewhere that the creators said Wu Fei and Mei Lan consumated their marriage.
Of course, the whole "playing cards" thing would make for an interesting story. ^_^

Still, its said that pregnancy is at its safest in the late teenage years, at least in regards to both physical fitness and genetics. Women who are pregnant older tend to be more likely to have kids with genetic defects, and women who take longer to get pregnant are statistically marginally more likely to acquire certain diseases. Of course, the benefits of teen pregnancy are cleanly outweighed by the downsides.

Colonel Lady Une I'm pretty sure the clan married her off to produce heirs. Yeah, it was an (obviously) arranged marriage for political reasons. From what I remember, the jist of it was that her clan was the more powerful one although they both needed to strengthen ties and et cetera. So her bearing a child (son) would have been something extrememly beneficial to all parties involved... except for Meilan and Wufei, of course. neutral

It's always defiantly a possibility. Everything is a possibility within the world of anime. *shrugs*
I myself susbcribe to the teory that Meiran was pregnant. Of course, we don't know anything for sure unless the creator has said something. Everything else is just fan speculation.

The problem with this is that neither one 'accepted' each other as husband and wife until after the battle with OZ... and Meiran died before she answered Wufei's acceptance of her with her own acceptance of him. If she was pregnant, than it was a "we have to" pregnancy, nothing else. Of course, if she was pregnant, would Wufei have agreed to give her that beat down in the rain over the philosophy of justice? Regardless of the Long Clan's warrior lifestyle, I sincerely doubt women who are known to be pregnant would fight in anyway, especially when an heir is needed. After all, it's dangerous to both mother and child, and I think they would have known that.
So, if she was pregnant, then I would think that they didn't know judging by the characters' actions towards each other and events. After all, the only reason Wufei gives against her taking that Leo Prototype out into the battle is that she's a woman, not that she's carrying the heir of the Clan.

I agree with Sailor 6. It seems highly unlikely that Wufei would accept her challenge if he knew that she was pregnant. However, they were married for such a short amount of time that, was consummation forced upon them, I don't know if either of them (or at least Wufei) would be aware if she was pregnant.
It's one of those things where it could easily go either way.
