Rain slapped the coins onto the counter, swiping up the package she had bought. She strode from the store quickly, her head held in a confident position. Her small brown gryphon hopped along on her heels, chirping happily. Rain put her hand down, scratching him under the ear. She turned out of the store, scooping up the small gryphon in her arms before jogging down the road. The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden-pink glow across the sky. Being caught out on the streets at night was something she didn't intend to do.
Asriel was knawing on a large deer leg was Aleraya strode into the clearing. She seemed very upset, all with her fussing and clucking. Asriel grumbled loudly, returning to his leg. Aleraya swatted him over the head with her wing angrilly, clacking her beak together. Asriel gave in, rising to his feet to see what was the matter. Aleraya pointed her wing to the setting sun, then in the direction of the city. Asriel swished his tail, knowing full well that Rain was late. But she would be fine, she was a strong human. Asriel growled an answer, laying back down to finish his meat.

Liu was completely lost. This city was nothing at all like her small, impoverished village. There were actual buildings and markets and so many people all in one place! The girl wasn't sure if she liked Xuen or not, this being her first visit. It was getting late, and sun was fast beginning to set.
Great.
The money from the goods she delivered were safely in the pouch at her waist. But, from the looks of things, she might very well be stuck in town over night. Liu wasn't sure she liked that idea. It would be much safer for her to be OUT of the bustling streets and out in the woods.
Thankfully, though, she wasn't entirely alone. Irysin was currently circling above, keeping a close eye and ear out for Liu. The rainbow striped female remembered what the village was like, and this place was certainly not the village! The scents were all unfamiliar, and the shops were set up differently. The open spaces that Irysin remembered were not at all like this place.
There was too much movement, too much activity, and even though things were beginning to slow with the threat of night . . . something in Irysin's gut told her that it would be better if they were away. Nothing but a shadow as dusk drew new, Irysin continued her concerned circling overhead.
All Liu had to do was whistle.
This was useless. She'd been walking in circles, and the entire town looked so different at night. When sunshine wasn't pouring from the sky to show the full view of the town, everything seemed to look the same. The buildings, the streets, the markets. Liu had trouble recognizing one form another!
But she was desperate.
Glancing around, she didn't want to announce the fact that she was lost. But she did want to ask someone where the nearest exit was. . . But who?
A woman passed by, holding a fuzzy child in her arms. No, wait - that wasn't a baby, that was, "A griffin!"
Well, she'd had nothing but good luck from fellow griffin owners. The few she'd met had been nothing but amiable, and so the girl took it as a good sign. Thank be the gods! "Excuse me, miss," she called out, scurrying after. Oh, please let her know which was out. "Do you - Do you know which way is out?"
It sounded ridiculous, but it seemed every way she travelled, the town just kept going. Her sense of scale and direction were completely turned upside down, but maybe her luck was about to change.

Rain turned, her long twisting braid swinging to the side. "Its just along this road. Actually, I was just heading towards the gate myself. You're welcome to come with me," she said. The sun was setting. She checked her shadow, estimating the time. She bit her lip, wondering if they would get there before the gate closed. Torak peeped nervously, squirming out of her arms, leaping down to the ground. His eyes followed the large black gryphon in the sky, chirping his wonder. He was not yet able to fly, but he sure wished he could.
Aleraya screeched her anger at Asriel, whacking him with a flick of her tail. Asriel growled lowly, ignoring the gesture. Aleraya hurred angrilly, unfolding her great wings. She leapt into the air, and with a powerful thrust of her wings, was airborne. She pumped her legs, soaring higher and higher, until she was content to glide towards the city. She flew over the gate, fluffing up her breast feathers proudly. She spotted her little mistress quickly, diving down to say hello.
Asriel yawned loudly, sitting alone in his clearing. All that was left of his meat was a large bone, which was covered in deep scratches from his fierce knawing. He swished his tail, looking in the direction Aleraya had flown off to. He lay his head on his claws, waiting patiently.

"Oh, thank you!" Liu breathed a sigh of relief. She'd had enough of the city for one day, that was for certain. She'd already been here long enough, and knew deep in her heart she wouldn't be making it back to her own village anytime soon. Perhaps if she had Irysin take her . . . but no, that wouldn't work.
Just because she'd heard of griffin-riders didn't mean she could become one over night. Or any day, anytime. She was a peasant girl with a pretty friend, that was all. But at least the griffin could keep her warm at night, and keep her safe.
Trotting after Rain, green eyes stole a quick glance at the griffin in her arm. "Adorable little guy," she admired, remembering when her own Irysin was that small. "They grow up so - - "
An indifferent - but very audible and quite familiar - screech was heard over head. Glancing up, she was surprised to see a red and black form diving down towards them.
Irysin had been content in her flight, diving and weaving above the cityscape. Most of the buildings weren't particularly high, but the ebony griffin managed to stay well enough that she wasn't too much of a distraction.
Life was good - until she caught sight of a red blurr diving down towards Liu! Her screech wasn't out of anger, but more surprise and concern. The female was protective of her guardian, and this red-diving griffin was a stranger. So she gave out her cry to warn her companion - and wasn't far behind the red.
Finding there little room to land, the rainbow-striped griffin took to hovering as best she could over Liu. Her violet eyes searched from the woman, the griffin chick in her arms, to the red.

((Actually, Aleraya ish blue. Pic~ Asriel's the red one. xd ))
Rain tickled Torak under the chin, smiling as she saw her great blue female diving down toward them. Torak chirped happily, spreading his wings, leaping from Rain's arms in his happy frenzy. "They really do...." murmured Rain. "Well, Aleraya can catch up. The gates are going to close soon, and being caught out in the streets after dark is suicidal...." said Rain quickly, setting off down the road in quick strides.
Aleraya glanced at the gryphon behind her, screeching loudly, landing a few feet away from Rain, dust blowing up in a large cloud around her. Aleraya sneezed loudly, shaking her head as she trotted over to Rain's side. It was easy for the large blue to keep up. Sometimes she wondered about the reason for human's small size.

((Oops! Sorry! Your Asriel-sig confused me . . obviously! *grins* My due apologies to Aleraya!))
Not one but two! Liu couldn't believe her good luck and fortune. Lately, it seemed that having one griffin wasn't enough - two was all the craze! (Or so Liu thought.) Not, of course, that she was jealous or filled with envy - no griffin could ever replace her loveable Irysin. But sometimes Liu wondered if her darling was . . . lonely.
The girl couldn't spend all her time with the she-griffin, and sometimes went a day or two without a visit. Whatever did her love do out in the woods alone? Did she make friends? Did she hunt? Did she ever get lonely. . .?
If only they lived closer to town. Maybe then her Irysin could find friends, or at least be around fellow Kin.
"Come on, you," Liu called out over her shoulder, beckoning Irysin to follow.
The black and rainbow-striped female was assured that the large blue female meant her companion no harm. Churring softly, she followed Aleraya and the others outside of the city gates.
Finding there to be much more space outside the city than in, Irysin made a lazy loop in the sky, circling all three before landing not far from the group. She stretched out her wings, shaking out her feathers, before bridging the distance between Liu and herself. Ducking her head, she rubbed it affectionately against Liu, violet eyes bright.
Liu gave a little laugh, taking a moment to offer her great beast of a friend some love. Her fingers ran through the ebony fur and feathers, and she offered Irysin a little kiss on her downy and fuzzy cheek. "See? You don't have to worry about me," she reassured, though goodness knew Liu felt much more secure with a griffin on her side.
Looking over at the stranger with the chick and the blue, Liu gave a grin. "Two griffins? And here I thought I had handful with one!"

"Actually three. One's still back at our little campsite. But yes, they can get to be quiet a handful. But its worth it," murmured Rain, stroking Aleraya's neck, her fingers running through the thick fur. Aleraya purred, swishing her tail as she walked. Outside the gate was so calm and quiet, and there was just so much space. Rain breathed in the countryside air, exhaling slowly. "So you're out of the city. Where are you planing on going next?" questioned Rain. The sun fell behind a far mountain, casting the road into shadow. Rain shivered, pulling a coat from her bag, pulling it over her bare shoulders.
Asriel yawned loudly, stretching himself out on his blanket. His belly was up in the air, his feet in the air. He snapped his jaws in his sleep, as if eating some large hunk of meat in a good dream. His tail twitched lazily, his ears perking every other moment. He really was a deep sleeper.
