Yes, we've been silent, but I thought that was because we were all far to engrossed in the new translation and remastered sound to log on to Gaia.
Mmm, Setzer. I want your pixels. blaugh

I think its more than that. sad
But anyway. Yes indeed, the new translation is........... interesting. Call me old fashioned.
But it is good to have it with me wherever I go. No need to rush through it, its just a comfort knowing I can turn it on whenever I want.

Maybe it's just me, but I think the new translation injects even more personality into the characters. Especially Cyan and Edgar.

I dont know, the more I play through the more agitated I get when the old version of a line pops in my head and then it prints differently on screen.
I like the more detailed descriptions of each character, but they didnt just add, they changed and totaly took away some of the key characteristic decriptions from the original.
Maybe some of their lines add more depth but I guess its just old habbits for me to want it to appear a certain way. sweatdrop

And if you actually check, this translation is much closer to the original Japanese... I've got the Japanese strategy guide (IT'S HAWT) and I've been checking the little things as I go along. Current loaction--World of Ruin, just got the Falcon, going after Gogo... if I'm strong enough. If not, I'm heading for Relm, then going on an Esper run.

Character descriptions that have been utterly changed from "Product of genetic engineering, battle hardened magitek knight with a spirit as pure as snow" to something completely different and drawn out. I garuntee you it wasnt the same, for any of the characters. Now I dont mind addition but completely changing the original ENGLISH version of the game that the fans and I fell in love with back in 1994 is a little bit agrivating.
When Im expecting lines like "He may be my friend were he not my enemy" and "You good dancer" and they just dont happen for me it feels a little unfulfilling.
My current location is Im about to head on down to Jidoor to sneak my way into the Opera House... Im almost afraid as to what they've changed about that monumental gaming moment.... confused
I guess Im just a purist.
(And I do have the Japanesse guides. And every English guide thats come out too.)

And every English guide thats come out too.) I can understand your point perfectly, and I'll admit that being unable to sing along with the opera like I usually can in a little disconcerting, but at the same time... I can see points I like about both translations. For example, I don't mind Fire/Fira/Firaga. I kind of mind Atma being changed to Ultima, much as it makes sense. Meltdown makes more sense than Merton, but either one is fine. I don't get why "Presenter" got renamed, considering that Presenter was its original name... overall, I'd say that the new translation is a wee bit more accurate, and certainly more poetic. However, the old translation has great nostalgia value and a TON of good lines. "Ymir! Get them!" doesn't carry the same punch as "Whelk! Get them!" What's bothered me the most so far is the rescuing Celes scene... why cut the beating and the being chained to the wall? Seriously, Squeenix. You leave in the attempted suicide. You leave in little Relm hitting on Edgar. You add Cyan nearly swearing. And you cut punches? Allow me to ask--WTF's up with that? Keep an open mind with the opera, please; it's synched much better, but the lyrics are radically different. I... kinda like them.

I agree about the spells, I prefere Fire, fire2, fire3 etc, just because its second nature for me for that game. Any other FF I would auto expect fira and firaga, but..ugh... Originals..
And I think you just broke my heart... I havent gotten to the opera scene yet... but youre telling me they changed it... yeah... Im pretty much over the rerelease...

Some of the new dialogue changes bother me, but as you pointed out, some of it was changed for the better.
However, some of the new esper names are just rediculous. They changed names like "Tritoch" to some long-winded name that I can't even pronounce. It certainly makes things a bit more difficult. I don't like some of the new relic names either. "Celestriad"? "Soul of Thamasa"? Bah, just give me my econimizers. lol

I don't like some of the new relic names either. "Celestriad"? "Soul of Thamasa"? Bah, just give me my econimizers. lol Quick to leap to the game's defense, it's NEKO!!! As for changing Tritoch, they actually put it back to the orignal Japanese. They did that with most of the changed Espers. I say "most" and not "all" because of the renamed Terrato, which should be Midgar Zolom. I'm checking these things as I run into them. It's great fun. I wouldn't call myself a "purist" because I'm not sure what I should be pure to. The original translation, much as I love it and am accustomed to it, was heavily flawed. There were things that are really only clicking now that I've read a retranslated version. However, some of the new stuff doesn't make sense to me, first to mind is the Presenter thing. And Reraise. That's just dumb. Accurate, but dumb. But should I be pure to the flawed original translation? Or to the original Japanese? Or to the slightly more accurate but newer translation? I really can't tell. Therefore, I've resolved to keep an open mind, and let it slide that Illumina is called Lightbringer. And Soul of Thamasa makes sense, dammit. It cropped up in XII and I was ecstatic. It follows that they'd reuse it here. Also, what with Thamasa being a village populated entirely by descendants of the Magi... it just doesn't bother me. What's bothering me the most are the boss names--I just finished Cyan's dream, and the Dream Stooges... aiyaa. Also! Did anyone else take Gogo to Cyan's dream? Because in the old version, if you took Gogo and Mog, Gogo's color scheme whould turn white and pink--she'd steal Mog's palette. And I didn't take Mog... but Gogo's outfit still turned funny colors. Anyone else run into that? Current location: WoR, heading to Ebot's Rock and/or Fanatic's Tower. Afters, getting the Merit Award and Gilgamesh. I've gotten everybody together. Optimal Party: Gogo, Setzer, Locke, and a placeholder. Probably Sabin. Gogo's current build: Mimic, Magic, Blitz, Item (replaced with Tools for the Coliseum)

Ooooooooooooooooooooooookaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay....
I just played through the opera..
I take my inhibitions back.
I actually smiled a little.
Whatever translation, I still couldnt get the old out of my head, but the new lyrics were still very beautiful and fitting. The sound is ever better I think on the gba then it ever was on the snes when it comes to the singing.
They are really hamming up the Locke Celes relationship and I love it. Its much more apparent. Though I was really expecting "That ribbon suits you".. stressed Oh well, close enough.
Me being a purist just = me being so accustomed to the version that I learned and fell in love with. Im open to all the translations, but it will never be the same or mean more to me then the original (being the original that i first played). Tis all.
Please dont spoil anything for me with later scenes and dialog! I wanna be surprised!
Im currently making my way to Vector, taking my sweet time.
