We all love POTO. That's why we're here, that's why the guild exists. But what I really wonder is this: Which of the mediums that POTO has been portrayed in do most people like best? The way I see it, the contest is between:

The book-The start of it all.

The original film-Lon Chaney's star making role, 1925.

The musical-Probably the most popular of all the works, made famous by Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in 1986.

The new movie-The movie adaptation of the stage show, 2004.

I've seen/read all of these, and I can say without a second thought that the stage show is EASILY my favorite.

I notice that almost everyone in the guild refers to the title character by his Leroux-given name 'Erik'. This leads me to believe that many of you prefer the book(but I'm just asking here to make sure). Personally, I have and will always refer to him simply as 'the Phantom'. This is because the stage show is the one I fell in love with, and 'Erik' is never mentioned within.

Also, I feel this is worth mentioning. I can't stand to watch Gerard Butler play the Phantom. My dream is to play the Phantom, and he just doesn't do the role justice for me. When I was 16, people were telling me I was better than Gerry Butler.

Personally, my favorite form of POTO would have to be the stage show, with Hugh Panaro playing the Phantom(cuz I kinda hero-worship him mrgreen ).

Please, tell us what your favorite form of the Phantom is, and why.

Also, if there is another medium that POTO has been portrayed in that I've forgotten, please tell me(please, no references to the God-awful 1990 TV series). sweatdrop

Gotta say Leroux. The musical is entertaining, but the book is the only one with actual depth to it.

*coughs* And I liked the miniseries. Teri Polo = heart

Hehe, sry about that. I barely even remember it to be honest. Guess I was too young to actually grasp it back then. Your sig is awesome, by the way.

While the musical holds a very special place in my heart, and I do love it very much....Ever since I've read the book, that was it. So, yes, I too will have to go with the Leroux version. 3nodding

Hm... I actually don't think I can say. I like the books (Leroux and Kay) and I like the musical and the movie (it's what pulled me in. Sorry). I haven't seen the Lon Chaney movie yet so I can offer no opinion on that.
I suppose if I had to choose it would be a tie between the books and the musical. I love the music. To me, without the music there wouldn't be the Phantom of the Opera we all love. Really, who could imagine life without the music of Phantom?

Well, the movie is what got me pulled in, but now that I look back on it, it wasn't really that great (and Emmy Rossum is so stuck up!). I LOVE the stage version, though! I just saw it a few weeks ago, and... wow. That's all I can say. Wow. I also love Susan Kay's book, but I don't really like Leroux. Sorry. sad

Um...anything except the '04 or '43 movie is fine with me. For now.

Well, I've read the book and i thought it was okay, but for some reason I didn't like it half as much as most people. I think maybe its just the way it was written.

The movie, dear god don't get me started. No really. Don't.

So i'm basically saying the stage version is my favorite. MY favorite phantom of all time will always be michael crawford and my favorite christine is Rebecca Caine. I don't really care for Sarah's singing, but I love her acting.

hum... i admit i've only seen the 2004 movie... so i'll vote for it
!!!BUT!!! no matter what, Gerard Butler remains THE best actor for the Phantom

unless of course, someone proves to me that there's someone in this world who is even better than Gerard (i would be fully surprised, though it will be EXTREMELY hard to convince me)

Oh, wow...that was hilarious. Roxx, I've got one actor and one actor only who is the ONLY one I can honestly say IS the Phantom...Michael Crawford.

If you're not only going for the play, I've got another one. What about Chaney?
