Brown-splattered paws carefully stalked through the grass. The prey was spotted, the objective clear. Tail low, pale blue eyes narrowed to watch the query. A pink tongue poked out between a tan upper lip and a white lower, indicating concentration. Wiggling just a bit, the young lioness lept forward, attacking her prey.
With a squeel, the mouse ran off, leaving Mut in the dust - quite literally. A peel of laughter escaped the juvenile. Hunting mice was fun! But she knew her life wouldn't be all fun forever. Eventually, she'd be like the other lionesses - She'd have cubs of her own, as well as a mate. Or at least, most lionesses had mates. Some didn't, or they left their mates.
Grooming a paw, Mut decided she'd never be like that. She'd have a mate, and stay with him always. A shake of her body sent dust flying off, lightening her body back to the peachy tan color it was. Looked time for a bath... Her paws soon carried her to the watering hole to bathe, which proved to be a good relief from the heat, as well. Seeing no others about, she assumed herself alone, enjoying the water by herself.

Ushu yawned as he lay stretched out at the edge of the wateringhole, just within the ring of golden grass that surrounded it. The day was a lazy one, making the young male drozy with it. He'd eaten recently, as shown by the soft bulge of his stomach. He was rather proud of that fact, and lounged even more to show off how well he'd fed. Hunting was still a new skill for him, and he failed more times than he suceeded. At least this time, he'd caught something substantial...
A bit of movement caught his eyes and he glanced over, round ears perking at the sight of a cub playing in the water. He smiled gently as he watched her, reliving his own younger days when he'd done the same thing. It wasn't all that long ago, but he over looked that little detail. In his own mind, he was an expirienced, skilled hunter, very-nearly an adult, even if his mane wasn't completely filled in.
A soft chuckle slipped from him as his tail flicked gently back and forth, the only real motion from him beyond his eyes tracking the pretty little cub.

Floating on her back, the juvenile let out a pleasant purr. The water felt so good... Tail flicking lightly, she watched the clouds drifting by. So lazy, so calm, it was just how she felt. Closing her eyes a moment, she rolled over and swam to shore. It was at that moment she noticed the other lion. He was larger, and had more of a real mane than her brothers had, but not as much as any of her adult brothers. Staring, she couldn't help being captivated by his red eyes. That was a color of eyes she'd never seen before - Her brothers and sisters all had either brown or blue eyes, and Big Brother had green. Who was this lion...? Brown-dipped tail twitching, she went over. "Hi! Who're you?"

Ushu grinned at the cub as he lowered his head, resting his chin on crossed paws. He remembered being that little, playing in the water like that and just enjoying the day. He still did it once in a while, though normally by himself so others didn't see how silly he was being. It was embarrassing to have other laugh at him for cub-like behavior.
He blinked gently at the cub as he smiled, noting the pretty shade of her own eyes. "I'm Ushukuru. What's your name?" He chose to leave out his normal long title, the one he liked to use to show off before other lions. This cub wasn't someone he had to impress. "I havn't seen you before, who are your parents?"

Perching on a rock, Mut smiled her big, warm smile at Ushukuru. "I'm Mut'salama." She motioned off to where the den she shared with her father, older sister, and litter mates was and said, "My father is Mahiri, my mother was Bakhti." Was because her mother was dead... But she didn't mention this. "I guess you haven't seen me often because I'm always following Big Brother." She paused, realising not everybody really knew of him like that. "His name's really Danzi, but I just call him Big Brother."

Ushu's head tilted as he watched the cub, nodding along with her little introduction.
"Well, its nice to meet you, Mut'salama. You can call me Ushu if you like." He smiled as his tail swished back and forth behind him in the dirt and grass. "I've never met any of those lions, but I've heard of Mahiri and Bahkti. I've heard of Danzi too. I think we're related, some how... I think he's my mother's cousin or something. Is he your brother, really? I didn't think he was related to Bahkti or Mahiri..."
It was a little confusing, all this buisness of who was related to whom, and who wasn't. It made his head spin sometimes, and it hurt if he thought about it too long.

The juvenile nodded, tail curling lightly. "Yup, he's my brother! But not by blood. Momma adopted him when he was smaller than I am now, and when he was as big as I am now, Daddy adopted him, too. So... He's our big brother." Stretching out, she alowed the sun to warm her fur. After getting wet, it was mildly chilly now. "I think Big Brother explained it once how he's related to the queen... His father was the late king's brother, which makes him the cousin of the current queen and her brothers and sisters... Ooh, you're the queen's nephew?" She paused. "One of her nephews." As she'd quickly learned, families in the Pridelands could be HUGE. If they weren't, it was a rarity.

Ushu chuckled as he smiled, stifling a yawn as the sun warmed his tan fur and made him a little sleepy.
"Yeah, just one of there. There are a lot more besides me. Its kinda cool how big my family, but it sometimes makes it hard to keep track of everyone. I don't think I've even met half of my relatives." His shoulders rose and fell in a shrug, his brown-tipped tail flicking. "Adopting another lion would make it even more confusing... you're not really related, but they're part of the family... So are you related to their children, or what? Very confusing." The tan adolescent shook his head and chuckled softly, turning his gaze on the juvenile to study her.
"So... did you come out here alone to play in the water?"

A little giggle escaped the tan and chocolate female as she stretched out, laying down in the sunlight. "I just wanted to cool off. It's rather warm, and the water's so very nice!" She stretched out her paws, flexing her chocolate toes with a little purr. "And the mud feels funny in a good way as it squishes between my toes!"

This time, it was a laugh that broke from Ushu, and he tossed his head as red eyes twinkled. She sure was a fun little female.
"Yeah, Know how that feels, and I like it too. I always thought it was more of a boy thing to like, but I suppose its neat for girls to like it too." Chuckling, he rose to stretch, his forelegs out before him as he arched his back and curled his tail behind him in the air.
In the distance, zebras peacefully, a pair of birds dancing in the air above them. Closer by, water splashed as something small jumped into it, sending ripples acrossed the expanse. And closer still, a tan lion felt an ease with a female that was new and strange to him. Females were very nearly a different species to him, and to find one that liked things he liked, well... it was completely out of his range of expiriences. "So, uh, Mut... is there anything else you like?"

The female pondered, tail curling lightly. "Well.. Bugs are fun to pounce on... And I like to climb up into the trees to greet the baby birds, though having my head pecked on kinda hurts.." She rolled over, paws tucking to her chest a bit. "And it's kinda fun to watch other lions chasing each other, and pouncing on my brother..." Mut's brow furrowed as she thought of other things she enjoyed doing. Nothing much more came to mind, really.
After a moment, she glanced towards the shadowy place known as the Elephant Graveyard. Big brother had told her that was where the hyenas lived. She didn't like that place... Or the hyenas. Even now, the two that had attacked her and Kabichi stood out clearly in her mind. "Do... Do the hyenas scare you at all...?" It was irrelevant to the current topic, but she was curious to know.

Ushu chuckled, nodding along. "Oh, I liked bugs too, as a cub, as well as climbing on rocks and trees. I was never much for baby birds... or anything that was for food." He tilted his head as his rounded ears caught every lilt of her voice, processing it in his mind.
"I tried pouncing my siblings a few times, but they didn't like it, so I stopped. I'm not really much for company, I guess, though I do get lonely once in a while. I get along better on my own, you know? No one else to worry about or argue with..."
He mused on the lonlieness he felt sometimes, so her question about hyena's took him by suprise, and he had to pause for a moment before answering. "Well, they used to when I was little... big scare creatures that could eat me... but not really so much anymore." The tan prince offered her a reassuring smile. "I'm too big for them now. I'd put up too much of a fight to make an easy meal, so I doubt they'd mess with me." He offered her a charming smile, his red eyes full of laughter.

"Really? You mean when I get bigger, they can't hurt me...?" Or... she hoped... Flicking a brown-splattered ear, Mut tilted her head just a bit. In the distance, she could hear the soft trilling of birds, as well as the sounds of prey beasts, other lions, other animals... A shiver ran down her spine as she heard the distant, far-off cackle of a hyena. Getting up on her paws, she stretched out, foretoes spreading. "Well... I'm gonna go now! Big Brother wanted to teach me to hunt somethin' small so I'll be ready when I'm older!" Smiling, she licked Ushu's snout. "It was nice meeting you, Ushukuru!" With a flick of her chocolate-brown tail, she turned and hurried off to find Danzi, a skip in her step after meeting somebody new.

The tan lion nodded in answer to her question, chuckling softly. "When you grow up, Mut, there will be little that will want to bother you. Lionesses are strong, and they have very sharp claws. Besides, you have the pride to take care of you if you need it. Nothing is more powerful than the pride when its together..." He mused as he spoke to her, his mind wandering to this pride he was born into it. It fel like home, but... he just didn't feel as attached to it as some of the other members did.
His next words pulled him from his revere, taking him rather by suprise. "Going?" Ushu blinked as he looked up, noting how far the sun had fallen already. "Geez... time went by so fast." He sighed and smiled gently as he rose. It was really too bad... he'd been enjoying talking to her. "Hey, Mut, wait!" He called out as he trotted to catch up, falling into a path beside her own. "Can I walk you there maybe? I don't really have anything else to do..."

The juvenile smiled, pausing in her walking. "It's okay, Big Brother sleeps in the little cave off Pride Rock, so it's not far." Her tail flicked gently as she gave him a big, warm smile. "Sleep well, Ushu!" Little paws scurried across dirt, grass, and rock as she mounted Pride Rock. In a moment of cubbish fun, though... She scampered up the prominade and peeked over the edge, wondering what it was like to look down from it as a king or queen. But that wasn't her place, and she knew it, so went back down to the base and headed for what she had come to call home. A pause, though, and she waved to Ushukuru one last time.
