oh my...
Yes, you can straighten hair, but I would NOT reccomend a straightening iron. As they mentioned above you can melt the fibers.
What you need to do is get the hair wet with realllllyyy hot water, hot water will help resolve the curls...
Let it dry and then comb and brush it.
My sister in law, katie bair is a MAD genious when it comes to wigs:

Any advice on type of hair, wig, price, stores, actually, any advice in general about wigs would be helpful...
Also, should I buy one premade or cut it myself?
http://www.amphigory.com/ Usually has very very NICE wigs, katie usually gets her wigs from this site.
You want to look for a fiber named Kanekalon or Toyokalon, *Though Kanekalon usually works best*
Do NOT be a cheapo when it comes to wigs, I know the 15 dollars one at the halloween store is a great bargain, but their wig caps are trash and people will be able to see your hair through the wig (Especially if your hair is a darker color)
http://www.pettingzoowigs.com/wigtutorial_wigcare.html <-- as she states here, for a good wig, do not be afraid to have to spend:
Expect to pay between $25-$35 for a good chin-length wig.
Expect to pay between $35-$50 for a good shoulder-length wig.
Expect to pay between $50-$60 for a good butt-length wig.
Watch out fot the Godiva wigs as well, you might have to pay 100+ on one, but not because of the quality, only because they're longer wigs.
Premade can be very expensive, I know katie's styling buissness can come to voer 100 dollars some times...
for an example, Katie did a chii wig :
http://www.pettingzoowigs.com/wig_chii.htmland the base price is 343 dollars.
So, if you're feeling adventurous, I would say style it yourself. Buy a long wig, treat it with CARE (this means pinning it to a model head and keeping it out of the way of little siblings, pets, etc) and style.
Remember, do NOT use heating iron products like straighteners! And be patient! There is nothing worse than having a beautiful cosplay and a crappy wig T-T;;
hope to see you at otakon!
