Has anyone here every written guitar tab? If so, is there any certain method that you use, because my friend wanted me to make to tab one of our(the bands) songs for him, but it took me forever to type. Can you telll me if the following is understandable? And does anyone know the name of that last A chord? 'Cause I forgot it.

Add more little dash things on the bottem one.... I think they always look screwy like that anyway when posted in a forum or somthing. I just make some lines, put the numbers in then take out the excess line. gonk Not much help I do but tabbing is time consuming when done on a keyboard. Its easy as heck to tab with a ruler, paper, and pencil. 3nodding

They look screwy because the forums don't use fonts that are fixed-width, like say Notepad or TextEdit. You can download free programs that make it easier to write tabs, they should be pretty decent.
...and I'd suggest writing tabs when you need to specify fills and melody lines as opposed to chords; you can just describe the chords and then just write 'Em Am Em ...'

Thanks for the tips. Paper,pencil, ruler. DUH! Simpleness is key. And the bit about the chords makes sense. I'll probably save tab for solos and stuff.

I don't write my tab in standard form. I use the Power Tab Editor. It makes it alot easier, as it has tab lines that look similar to standard notation (it shows the tab in standard, too!). It's easy to edit, easy to set note lengths and style marks, and it plays the tab back to you. PowerTabs.net is where you need to go to get it.. they've also got just about any tab you can think of.

Indeed, PowerTab ******** rocks.
Problem is, I switched to the Mac...which doesn't have any decent free Tab-editing software at all. gonk

Only thing Macs are good for is Video and Sound editing.

Freedom! rofl rofl rofl Only noobs get pwned by viruses and hackers with windows. I am teh l33t haXx0rZ. Not a single virus, fatal error, or hijacking in all the years i've ked with computers. Havn't touched a mac in nearly 3 years. lol

Yeah, some programs like Power Tabs is great. You can hear what you are getting down. I'd definately recommend it if you're gonna tab online, especially if you're making an original song. When I write tablature on paper though, I use binder paper - you really don't need a ruler, haha. Just mark the 6 lines you're gonna use with a lil' bar to the left, and you can start putting in the numbers immediately. In any case, if you wrote it down in NotePad or Word or so, you can probably show it perfectly using the CODE feature of Gaia (it's next to the "QUOTE" button when you post). I still strongyl recommend PowerTab. I do however carry around some TAB paper with me (in the same binder i use for lyrics) incase i need to jot a riff or line down and im not near the guitar or a computer.

Havn't touched a mac in nearly 3 years. lol IRRELEVANT TO TOPIC* macs suck due to the fact that there are barely any programs that are compatible with it. all the programs have to be from apple. In other words, dont put all ur eggs in one basket. PCs have more options. I'd get a blank music notation book and write the actual music notation on the top line and on the set of lines below it just add another line to represent another E string and take it from there. Then it's easier to understand.
