From Style to Style most have a system of ranking the practioner. however i realize that the system varies from one style to the next. I just wanted to get a general idea of how advanced some people here actually are so please explain the ranking system of the Martial Art you take.

Heres mine (I am currently a Brown Belt):
Lv1: White
Lv1.5: White Yellow stripe (I say 1.5 because the stripe means you basically know about half of what you need to know to get to the next belt)
lv2:Yellow
Lv2.5:Yellow Blue stripe
Lv3: Blue
Lv3.5: Blue Red Stripe
Lv4: Red
Lv4.5: Red Brown Stripe
lv5: Brown
lv6: Brown Black
(after Brown Belt 10 black stripes are needed to reach black belt, after 3 black stripes it is a brown/black belt which IS in fact a different belt)
There are 10 degrees of Black belt and they are
0: Black belt holder
1: Instructor in training
2: Assistant instructor
3: Deputy Instructor
4: Instructor
5-8: Master
9:Chiefmaster
10:Grand Master (there is only 1)

That is quite a respectable time it would take to achieve black belt, you must have to work for it and earn it. I like that! biggrin

im a green belt and the ranking system is that if you come to class for a day they fill out the days youve came to the class and you need to come to class 10 days to and if they think you progressed enough you get 1 strip and you need 4 strip to get the next belt level but you gotta wait till the graduation ceromony where they test you out on combos, moves, and how well you do it and how well you remember your forms and combos.

My Wing Chun schools system.

White (Siu Lim Tao form)

Light Blue (In our school adults skip to Blue this just gives kids more time to train)

Blue

Brown (Begining Chum Kiu form)

2ed Brown

Black (Biu Jee form)

2ed Black (Where I am after about 5 close to 6 years)

Green

Gold

Red (Master Level)

It takes about 6 months as someone said above but it mostly depends on if the instructor feels you are ready to test. We have a test once a year unless we have a bunch of older students who are ready to grade. I skipped a few test I should have tested for Green Sash last time but I went to tech school. I am currently out of class still but I hope to get back into it once I have the time and money.
