It was a hot day, the midday sun baking down on harsh earth, scalding the sparse grass that grew through the sands at the edge of the desert. The sun was cruel, burning through a cloudless sky, granting no mercy to the hapless traveler.
He traveled the skies about, sunlight beating down on white plumage, feathered form lost in the bright, endless sky. He had been following a trail, green eyes finding the dark patches on the earth below where the blood of a familiar form had seeped into the earth.
He was near, he could feel it, the object of an unfortunate bond that neither party cared for. But despite this, the feathered creature was drawn to the fallen beast, to a place they had once shared before, a place that neither had wished to visit again.

Harsh and scalding, but even this land was not without it's beauties or it's treasures. The pools of water fed by the seasonal rains, sustained by the stubborn trees that dared to defy the sands, the oasis was a welcome retreat to the weary traveler.
It was here that he had paused, resting under the shade of trees, quenching his thirst in the water, staving his hunger with the fish that dwelled in the pool. It had been a difficult trek, far more so than it should have been, his large form hindered by injuries, betrayed by his tattered hide and the red trail he'd left in his wake.
But he would not give up, he had a task he could not fail. He had to find her, his only daughter, snatched from his paws by his the blue monster who called himself war.
However, even the god of conflict was not foolish, knowing that he could not trek through the land of the firekin injured as he was. So it was here that he had chosen to rest, allowing his wounds to heal before charging after the demon again.

Green eyes searching the sands below, his gaze fell on the familiar white pelt, tattered and marred with the vicious battle. How that great beast had managed to stay on his feet long enough to reach this oasis he would never know, but then it wasn't the first time the white god had surprised him with his ability to survive.
Sighing quietly, and perhaps steeling himself for the exchange that would surely follow, Shiki descended from his flight, drifting to flutter about the ground near the fallen god.
"It seems history repeats itself."

Stirred from a light sleep, the lion's jaw clenched, a menacing growl rumbling in his throat. He knew that voice, that annoying little rat with wings was the last creature he wanted to see or hear.
"It figures you would show up here, what the hell do you want?"
His words were harsh, angry, accented by the snarl on his maw as he lifted his head, dark talons flexing in irritation. It was a threat, that was certain, proclaiming clearly that if the feathered nuisance dared come within range, the white god would rip it to shreds.

The bird snorted, feathers ruffling as he settled just out of Tanaka's reach, wings folding back irritably. In the time that he had know the white god, Shiki had grown wise to his moods, he knew better than to step within range of those claws.
"Well I'm not exactly happy to see you either fuzzy. It's not my fault you got yourself maimed like an idiot."

Of all the things he could have said, Shiki had chosen the worst, perhaps the feathered annoyance did not know the white god so well as he thought he did, or maybe he just had a death wish.
The lion's reaction was instant, vicious, driven by an infernal rage. Hid body surged forward, paws lunging at the bird, talons slicing through feathers, searching for vulnerable flesh beneath. He moved with surprising speed, a terrifying snarl ripping from his jaws to echo across the sands.
"Then why are you here?!"
His voice was thunderous, a demand rather than a question. He was not in the mood for games and would not have hesitated to rend the creature's head from its body if only his talons could catch him.

The bird let out a sharp squawk, fluttering back in a flurry of feathers, narrowly avoiding the talons that threatened to rend him asunder. It appeared the lion was in a much fouler mood than he had thought; Shiki would have to watch his step.
"My, my, aren't we in a temper today. No wonder you keep getting into trouble, always thinking with your rage instead of your head."
Shiki was pushing his luck and he knew it. That mocking tone of his was going to get him into trouble, but he never was one to turn down the chance to get a few good shots off on the fallen god.

Fangs bared, tail lashing like a venomous snake, the great lion rose to his paws taking a menacing step toward the irritating beast. Injured though he was, he was menacing, imposing, a terrifying figure, the image of a hellish demon who was not to be crossed.
"And you would know all about trouble wouldn't you."
His voice was smooth, a silken threat, each accent punctuated with a snap of his fangs. He took another step toward the bird before settling on his haunches, raising one forepaw to display sharp talons, his paw flexing as if imaging those talons grasping the creature by it's neck, sinking into fragile flesh.
"You never did know when to keep your beak shut did you, featherhead. Or did you want me to rip you half?"

"Now, now, there's no need to stoop to petty name calling and threats. Besides, we both know you couldn't even if you tried."
Wing spread, Shiki fluttered back from the menacing talons of the white demon, ever wary of the lion's movements. He had never seen the white lion look so dangerous as he did now, and he would have been foolish not to fear him. It seemed whatever fuse Tanaka had was now dramatically shortened, and the bird was all too aware that he had pushed further than was wise.
Then why did he keep persisting? Why did he insist on pushing his luck each time until the lion finally attacked and forced him to retreat. Perhaps he was simply a fool who enjoyed tempting fate. Or maybe he was pushing to see just how far the white god would go, to see if he would really follow through with his threats, to see if he could.

"Oh, you think so do you? Let's test that statement shall we."
There was no taunt in his tone, no threat, just a fact spoken through bared fangs as his talons sliced into the earth, muscles coiled, tail lashing behind him, an infernal fire burning in his green gaze. He was serious this time, an unmistakable intent to kill in his posture, his eye, in every twitch of of tail, every ripple of powerful muscles.
Jaws parted, vicious snarl echoing in his chest, the white lion stalked forward, circling his intended victim with blood-thirsty rage. He gave no further warning, lunging in a vicious pounce, jaws snapping at the feathered creature, intending to rend it's head from it's body, to silence that irritating voice once and for all.

Feathers ruffled, Shiki watched the lion warily, nervously. He was no match for those lion's jaws, and he had no desire to find out if the god really could bite him in half. This was to be a brief meeting, briefer than he'd expected, and the time had come to make his retreat before those fangs reached him.
With an ear-piercing squawk, the bird spread his wings and leapt for the skies, leaving the lion with a mouthful of feathers and a seething temper. That had been closer than he'd cared for, far too dangerous for comfort. He would have to remember to be that much more careful then next time they met, a time which would no doubt come too soon.
