Ouran High School Host Club (桜蘭高校ホスト部, Ōran Kōkō Hosuto Kurabu?) is the title of a Japanese fiction series created by Japanese author Bisco Hatori centering around a group of high school friends all in the same club - the Host Club.

The series started as a manga serialized in LaLa magazine on August 5, 2003. The manga is unfinished with ten complete volumes released in Japan. The manga has been licensed by United States based company Viz Media with seven volumes released in English. Ouran was adapted into a 26-episode anime television series produced by Bones, which premiered on April 5, 2006 in Japan.

The North American English-language edition uses the title Ouran High School Host Club, while the Singapore English-language edition excludes the word school from the title. As for the Japanese title itself, although the kanji "部" (pronounced as bu in most cases) is used, it has been stipulated that it be read as kurabu (the Japanese transliteration for "club"). However, "部" ("bu") is also a typical contraction for "部活動" ("bukatsudou") within Japanese schools. In the drama CDs and the anime adaptation, it was pronounced as "bu" by the cast.

Plot

Ouran High School Host Club is a story that takes place primarily at Ouran High School. The school is an exclusive institution reserved only for students from incredibly wealthy and affluent families. One exception, is scholarship student Haruhi Fujioka, a young girl from a lower-middle class family who has a 'low threshold for gender identity'. Because of this (and the superfluous cost of the school uniform), Haruhi resorts to wearing long slacks, polo shirts and a vest that resembles the male student's uniform. Therefore, upon entering school, she was at first taken as a male student.

One day, she begins to search through the vast campus for a quiet place to study since all the libraries are filled with gossiping students. Her search takes her to the technically unused Third Music Room where she stumbles upon the Host Club - a group of six attractive male students who spend their time charming and entertaining the school's girls for profit. During their first meeting, Haruhi is shocked at their behavior which causes her to accidentally knock over a very expensive vase valued at ¥8,000,000 ($80,000 US in the English manga). This causes Haruhi to contract a massive debt with the Host Club. In order to pay off the large sum, she is employed as the club's "dog" and is constantly ordered to do menial tasks for the members, such as serving food or cleaning up.

Once the club president, Tamaki Suou, sees "him" without "his" glasses, Haruhi is promoted to be one of the hosts of the club as a way to pay off "his" huge debt. The other club members soon discover that Haruhi is a female, but since she is already accepted by the club's customers and became one of the main attractions of the club, Haruhi is allowed, and continues to be forced to stay until she has accumulated a total of 100 (which later grows to 1,000) customers, at which time her debt would be considered paid in full.

Setting

Ouran Private Academy

The bulk of the story takes place at Ouran Private Academy, which is a school encompassing all the grades from kindergarten to high school. The vast majority of students are from very rich families and have connections with family businesses going back several generations. Some of the students aren't as financially well-off as others, but are able to attend the school due to a special scholarship, though the ones who are able to obtain this rare offer must be very intelligent. Haruhi Fujioka is one such student. It is implied that this scholarship is offered to only one student per level, as Haruhi had to take a make-up test when her ranking fell to no. 3 from the top spot. According to Kyouya, if she had done poorly in that test again, she will be demoted to Class D, or even forced to leave Ouran.

Host Club members

Haruhi Fujioka (藤岡 ハルヒ, Fujioka Haruhi)?, (Seiyū - Maaya Sakamoto, Drama CD seiyū - Aya Hisakawa)

Birthday: February 4th
Age: 16
Zodiac Sign: Aquarius
Height: 155cm (5'1")
Blood Type: O
Strong subjects: Classical Japanese, English
Favourite Foods: Sushi, ramen, strawberries, ootoro, many high-class foods
Disliked Food: Sweet things in general
Type: Natural Rookie
Mid-term Exam Ranking: 1st Year, 3rd Place
Fear: Thunder
Sentai color (volume 5): White

Haruhi is the main heroine of the story, a lower-middle class first-year student who is able to attend Ouran High School through an academic scholarship and because her grades in school are so high. Shortly after arriving at Ouran, Haruhi accidentally breaks a vase worth ¥8,000,000 ($80,000 in the manga's North American English version) while in the Host Club clubroom and since then has been forced to work for them to pay for it. Mistaking her for a boy, the club initially has her running trivial errands for them, but they make her a host once they discover that, beneath her glasses and rumpled clothing, she is actually good-looking. Her natural sincerity and consideration makes her a hit with the club's customers, and it is only after she has been accepted as a host that the club learns the truth about her gender.

She is a very sensible, honest, and forthright individual, and her down-to-earth practicality has charmed both the Host Club's members and its customers. However, her lack of hesitation in expressing her opinions can sometimes lead her to say, without any intended malice, things which others find hurtful. Her stubborn independence can also sometimes get her into trouble, as it typically doesn't occur to her to ask others for help even when she is in over her head, and has trouble understanding why people like her father and Tamaki worry about her. She is often bemused and sometimes irritated by the antics of the Host Club, but in spite of that, she has developed increasingly strong friendships with her fellow club members. She seems to be a bit dense where it comes to interpreting the subtler signals from people around her, especially when it concerns romantic interest, but is perceptive enough to tell the twins apart.
It appears that Haruhi has chosen to attend Ouran with the intention of following in her late mother's footsteps and becoming a lawyer. She has stated on more than one occasion that she is at Ouran in order to pursue her dream, and wants to see how far it can take her.

Haruhi admits that she has a low threshold for gender awareness; she was not actually trying to pass as male, but didn't feel the need to correct the others' assumptions. Her lack of differentiation between male and female gender roles was probably influenced by her father, who was originally bisexual and, saying that he could never love another woman, took up cross-dressing after the death of his wife. Whatever the reason, she is a fairly androgynous person who does not care much about the clothing she wears and seems to have little interest in romance. She enjoys taking care of household chores, particularly cooking, and is not easily frightened by things like bugs or ghost stories; her only weakness is a paralyzing fear of thunderstorms.

She has a soft spot for expensive food, which she is usually unable to partake in, such as ōtoro (a type of tuna sushi), otherwise referred to as "Giant Tuna"; to her, they are a luxury. She likes tasty food in general, but gets especially excited over seafood. In some cases, the promise of such food can be used to bribe Haruhi into going along with the less sound plans of the host club.

Tamaki Suoh (須王 環, Suō Tamaki)?, (Seiyū - Mamoru Miyano, Drama CD seiyū - Hikaru Midorikawa)

Birthday: April 8th
Age: 17
Zodiac Sign: Aries
Height: 183cm (6'0")
Blood Type: A
Strong subjects: English, French, World History
Favourite Foods: Commoner's ramen, commoner's candy (Baby Star)
Type: Prince
Mid-term Exam Ranking: 2nd Year, 2nd Place
Sentai color (volume 5): Red

Tamaki is a half-Japanese, half-French Ouran High School second-year student and the president of the Host Club, the founding of which was his idea. He is sometimes referred to as the "King" of the Host Club and is by far the most popular host, with a 70% request rate. The usual instigator of all of the Host Club's antics, Tamaki is prone to dramatics and often acts without thinking or overreacts to trivial things; the other members of the club, particularly Hikaru and Kaoru, often take amusement at his expense. However, they also almost always follow his lead, and staunchly support him when it's needed.

Despite his foolish behavior, Tamaki is very generous and easily moved by the distress of others, even strangers. Once aware of others peoples' problems, he will do all he can to help them and "ascertain justice". He often makes elaborate plans or "strategies" to fix many solutions. His family is involved mostly with the business market, but also handles the school administration. In fact, Tamaki is the son of the superintendent so in effect his family is financially supporting Haruhi as a scholarship student.

Tamaki's grandmother, the true head and decision-maker of the Suoh family, bears a grudge against him over the fact that his father had an affair with Tamaki's mother and divorced his legal wife when Tamaki was born. Because there is no other heir to the Suoh family, his grandmother acknowledges Tamaki as a Suoh, but refuses to allow him to live in the family's main residence and forbids him any contact with his mother in France (In the manga, his mother ran away from home after his return to Japan, although Kyoya commented that given his father's influence, he (the father) should know where she is.) In spite of this, Tamaki appears to hold no hard feelings against his grandmother, and retains an almost excessively positive outlook on life.

For all his immaturity and silliness, Tamaki proves to be a naturally excellent student, routinely placing second in his class (behind Kyoya) without making any particularly great effort towards studying. He is a talented piano player, and unlike the other members of the Host Club (such as Kyoya and the Hitachiin brothers) there is surprisingly little artifice in his treatment of the club's customers. In his profile at the end of volume 1 of the manga, Hatori notes that despite his apparent glibness with the girls, he genuinely means what he says. Haruhi, however, finds his behavior more troublesome than charming - much to Tamaki's chagrin, as he quickly developed a romantic infatuation with her which she has yet to show any signs of reciprocating. He himself seems oblivious to his infatuation with Haruhi, confusing it with fatherly feelings. In fact, he fell ill after he thought that his attempt to kiss Haruhi made him a "pervert"; he "solved" the problem by kissing the girl on her forehead.

Kyoya Ootori (鳳 鏡夜, Ōtori Kyōya)?, (Seiyū - Masaya Matsukaze, Drama CD seiyū - Junichi Suwabe)

Birthday: November 22nd
Age: 17
Zodiac Sign: Scorpio (his profile in volume 1 of the manga states that he is a Cancer)
Height: 181cm (5'11")
Blood Type: AB
Strong Subjects: English, German, Physics
Favourite Foods: Spicy things
Disliked Food: Sweet things
Type: Cool
Mid-term Exam Ranking: 2nd Year, 1st Place
Sentai color (volume 5): Black

Kyoya is a second-year student at Ouran High School, and vice-president of the host club. The "cool type" of the club, he is extremely intelligent and quite calculating, capable of manipulating events to serve any number of purposes. His family is primarily involved in hospital management and the medical industry with various other business interests as well, and supplies the school's medical staff and security (via its 100-member private police force). As the third son, Kyoya is unlikely to inherit leadership of the family's business unless he can surpass his older brothers' achievements to his father's satisfaction. This puts a lot of pressure on Kyoya, but he claims that he cannot think of a more interesting challenge. His family and the Suoh family are rivals, so Kyoya initially befriended Tamaki because his father ordered him to for business reasons. However, as time passed, their friendship became genuine. Also, in the manga, he's shown to be sympathetic to his elder sister, Fuyumi, who was married; when their father saw her back in the house, he commented that married women shouldn't return home so readily.

Although Tamaki is the official leader of the club, Kyoya can easily influence Tamaki when he wants, and in a conflict between the two the other members of the club follow Kyoya's lead, causing Haruhi to refer to him privately as the "Shadow King." He was the only Host Club member to realize immediately that Haruhi was a girl, but kept the knowledge to himself in order to see what would happen; he often goes along with the Host Club's more eccentric antics, or even encourages them further, on the grounds that the results could be "interesting." Kyoya keeps track of various information about the students at Ouran Academy and is even in contact with Haruhi's father, who turns out to be the source from which Kyoya obtained Haruhi's photographs and information about her middle school popularity. He does not hesitate to turn a profit from the Host Club's popularity, even to the point of auctioning off items like Haruhi's pencil, and he keeps Haruhi in debt to the Host Club by finding various ways to add to it.

He claims to do nothing which does not profit him, and tells Haruhi that this is the only reason he is friends with Tamaki and involved with the Host Club, saying that there is "not one millimeter of similarity" between himself and Tamaki. This, however, appears to be a lie. Kyoya is altruistic in his own way, and often seems to act on Tamaki's behalf, most notably during the school festival in volume six of the manga. In his profile, Bisco Hatori notes that despite what he says, he and Tamaki are good friends.
Kyoya has low blood pressure and wakes up with a bad temper, earning him the nickname of "Low Blood Pressure Demon Lord". As such, he tends to sleep in until noon.

Hikaru (常陸院 光, Hitachiin Hikaru?) and Kaoru Hitachiin (常陸院 馨, Hitachiin Kaoru)?, (Seiyū - Kenichi Suzumura (Hikaru) and Yoshinori Fujita (Kaoru), Drama CD seiyū - Sōichirō Hoshi (Hikaru), Kenichi Suzumura (Kaoru))

Birthday: June 9th (Hikaru is the elder)
Age: 16
Zodiac Sign: Gemini
Height: 178cm (5'10")
Blood Type: B
Strong Subjects: Hikaru: Math, Physics, Chemistry, Art / Kaoru: English, Modern Japanese, Art
Type: Little Devil
Mid-term Exam Ranking: Hikaru: 1st Year, 5th Place / Kaoru: 1st Year, 4th Place
Sentai color (volume 5): Blue

Hikaru and Kaoru are first-year students in the same class as Haruhi. Identical twins, Hikaru (who parts his hair from his right side) and Kaoru (who parts his hair from his left side) tend to imply they have an incestuous relationship, making a show of it for the benefit of the "boys love" fans among the Host Club's customers. Unlike Tamaki, their interaction with the club's customers is entirely calculated; the "little devil" types of the club, they enjoy making a game of manipulating others for their own amusement, and are easily bored.

The two of them are extremely close and dependent upon one another, seeing the world primarily in terms of "us" and "those apart from us" and having little concern for anyone else. Prior to joining the Host Club, they had very little interaction with other people. It is only after Haruhi joins the Host Club that Hikaru and Kaoru's world really begins to expand. Haruhi proves to naturally distinguish between the two of them and sees them as two individuals rather than interchangeable; she can easily tell them apart even when they are intentionally posing as one another. This is something new for Hikaru and Kaoru, and the two of them grow very fond of her, sometimes to the point of being possessive. Since they also enjoy poking fun at Tamaki, they often rub their friendship with Haruhi in Tamaki's face and flirt with her just to provoke him. For a long time, they have been playing a game where people have to guess which twin is which; while this initially seems nothing more than a game, it is revealed that this is an important matter to the twins, who wish to be recognized as individuals. Of late, it seems that Hikaru is developing a romantic interest in Haruhi, although he may not be fully aware of this himself. Kaoru has noted that Hikaru is a bit 'slow' in this particular area.

Their mother specializes in clothing design, and they occasionally provide clothing of her design for the Host Club's events or in an effort to get Haruhi to dress more femininely. When their mother appears at the school festival, she proves to have a very strong personality, and it is clear that the twins take after her. They, too, have a mutual knack for fashion, and in the manga they are sometimes shown styling Haruhi's hair or doing her makeup. Of the two twins, while Hikaru is usually the leader, he also seems to be the more insecure one. Kaoru displays a somewhat larger measure of emotional maturity. Also, it's noted that their surname was their mother's, and that their father had married into the Hitachiin family.

In the manga, it was commented by one of the twins that the Hitachiins are primarily of a matriarchal lineage and female Hitachiins are more outstanding than the males. The twins are afraid that they might end up being weaklings like their father since they resemble him, but Haruhi noted that they resemble their mother more.

In the manga, both brothers had feelings for Haruhi. While Hikaru doesn't realise his love for the girl, Kaoru didn't want to hurt his brother. So far, only Hunny knows of Kaoru's crush on Haruhi.

Mitsukuni Haninozuka (埴之塚 光邦, Haninozuka Mitsukuni?, (Seiyū - Ayaka Saito, Drama CD seiyū - Ikue Ohtani)

Birthday: February 29th
Age: 18
Zodiac Sign: Pisces
Height: 148cm (4'10")
Blood Type: AB
Strong Subject: Math
Favourite Foods: Cake, strawberry, sweet things, spicy things
Disliked Food: Carrot
Type: Loli-shota
Mid-term Exam Ranking: 3rd Year, 1st Place
Sentai color (volume 5): Pink

Mitsukuni is the Host Club's "Loli-shōta" host and always goes by the nickname "Hunny"; In the Japanese versions his nickname is romanized as "Honey" (ハニー Hanī). Despite the fact that he looks like a child and always carries a stuffed toy bunny named "Bun-Bun" ("Usa-chan" in Japanese) with him, Hunny is a third-year in Ouran High School and the club's oldest member. His customers love his "cute little boy" behavior. Indeed, he often calls everyone by affectionate nicknames like "Haru-chan" for Haruhi and "Tama-chan" for Tamaki. The only exception is Mori, who Hunny calls by his first name of "Takashi", and vice-versa. As cute and defenseless as Hunny looks, he comes from a prestigious martial artist family and is a national champion martial artist himself.

Before the founding of the Host Club, Hunny was the captain of the school's karate club, and did his best to seem strict and tough in order to please his father. However, when Tamaki approached him about starting the Host Club and expressed the opinion that being true to what makes a person happy shows more strength than living a lie, Hunny chose to leave the karate club and join the Host Club instead. His decision greatly dismayed his younger brother Yasuchika, who is disturbed by Hunny's childish cuteness to the point that he thinks Hunny might be an alien. Yasuchika, who succeeded Hunny as captain of the karate club, periodically challenges Hunny to sparring matches, which he uses as a means of learning from Hunny and improving on his techniques. Sadly, it becomes apparent that Hunny's love for sweets proves to overpower his love for his own brother.

In light of Hunny's martial arts prowess, some rumors have been spread about him amongst the members of the club. One such story involves an alleged international incident between Japan and the United States which occurred as a result of Hunny being woken up from his daily afternoon nap too early by a soldier on a training holiday, causing a "Bunny swell phenomenon" (A rabbit version of the "Seven Swell Phenomenon"; see Eureka Seven for more details), wiping out two United States Green Beret platoons instantly. Humorously, Haruhi dismissed this as rubbish only to be convinced when it's revealed that Hunny's bloodtype is AB, the same as Kyoya. He also wakes up in a bad mood due to low blood pressure, like Kyoya, though he tends to wake up early.

Hunny was once described by the author as "so cute that it's almost a crime".

Takashi "Mori" Morinozuka (銛之塚 崇(モリ), Morinozuka Takashi (Mori))?, (Seiyū - Daisuke Kirii, Drama CD seiyū - Kenjirō Tsuda)

Birthday: May 5th
Age: 18
Zodiac Sign: Taurus
Height: 192cm (6'4")
Blood Type: O
Strong Subjects: Geography, Japanese History
Favorite Food: Oriental (such as natto)
Type: Wild Card
Mid-term Exam Ranking: 3rd Year, 2nd Place
Sentai color (volume 5): Silver

Mori is also a third-year student of the school and is the tallest, most silent member of the club. Despite the fact that he rarely speaks or smiles, his tall, tanned, and handsome figure earns him many customers. According to Kyoya, "his taciturnity is his selling point," and many of his admirers are the more introverted and serious girls at Ouran. He's labeled the "wild type" host. Because Mori acts largely on his instincts, this label fits him rather well. Additionally, Mori is the Japanese national champion in kendo.

Additionally, Mori is Hunny's cousin. The Morinozuka family had protected the Haninozuka family for many generations. The two families were joined by marriage two generations ago, the families became related to each other, thus breaking the master-servant tradition. Nevertheless, Mori still faithfully protects Hunny and is always by his side, attending to his wishes and watching out for him. Also, in the manga, he has a younger brother, Satoshi, who is friends with Hunny's brother.

In contrast to Hunny, who is bad-tempered when he wakes up, Mori becomes uncharacteristically talkative and friendly when he is tired.

Supporting characters

Renge Houshakuji (宝積寺 れんげ, Hōshakuji Renge)?, (Seiyū - Kozue Yoshizumi, Drama CD seiyū - Sayaka Maeda)

The Host Club's (self-proclaimed) manageress who tends to be very loud and outspoken. She had lived in France for a short time before she came to attend Ouran. Renge first came across the Host Club by maintaining the belief she was Kyoya's fiancée despite never having met him in person.

This is due to her love of visual novel-type video games to a point that she sometimes confuses them with real life. Her fascination with Kyoya originated from her obsession with one such dating game (Kyoya greatly resembled the lead character). Still, her experience with dating sims causes her to be more aware of character development and a thickening plot. Tamaki initially allowed Renge to become the host club's manager in hopes that she would be a female friend to Haruhi and inspire her to act and dress more feminine. He was harshly disappointed when Renge wound up developing a crush on Haruhi, believing she was a boy.

In the anime, she almost always enters using a rising platform powered by a high powered motor, even when the host club is off campus. At first she often complains how they're "not good enough" in various ways, but as she grows more satisfied with the hosts, she begins bringing in more customers with her fangirly ways. She also changes favorites every once in a while. Amusingly enough, Renge has proven an asset to the Host Club as a manageress on several occasions. She can accurately predict what will win the greatest approval of customers due to her wide range of knowledge on various subjects, most of them connected to the concept of "moe". Kyoya has complimented her on several occasions already.

Renge also has activities which allow her talents to flourish that do not directly concern the Host Club; in the anime, she is shown hosting a sentai show for school children and she apparently is involved in producing the Moé Moé Ouran Journal (萌え萌え桜蘭日記, Moe Moe Ōran Nikki?), a school magazine containing all things related to moé at Ouran High School.

In the manga, Renge largely disappears from view after her initial appearance in chapter 3 (although she makes cameo appearances in subsequent chapters). Hatori mentioned that Renge was going to be more of a recurring character, but it never happened. Her comment probably led to Renge's numerous appearances in the anime. Some of her parts were originally performed by Tamaki in the manga, e.g. the coaching of Shiro and Nekozawa. Interestingly, in volume 9, her appearances were significantly increased.

Umehito Nekozawa (猫澤梅人, Nekozawa Umehito)?, (Seiyū - Yuji Ueda)

A hooded figure holding a cat puppet named Beelzenef, Umehito Nekozawa (almost always referred to by only his last) hates bright light to the point that he calls anyone who drags him into the light as 'murderers'.

The Black Magic Club’s president, he tries to get people to join his club though is not too successful. However, anyone who joins gets a free "Beelzenef" doll. Nekozawa has one as a puppet, but it is also available as a wooden doll. Nekozawa claims that if you write the name of the person you hate on the back of the doll, the person will be showered with misfortunes. Tamaki, especially, is superstitious about Nekozawa's curses due to having experienced them firsthand, or so he believes.

Nekozawa is actually quite handsome under his hood, although he wears a black wig over his naturally blond hair. He has an adorable little sister named Kirimi, but she is afraid of the dark and as a result the two siblings were not able to be around one another until Tamaki and the Host Club got involved and prompted Nekozawa to adapt to light and display his more heroic and princely side. In the end, it is Nekozawa's love for and desire to protect his little sister that endears him to her, despite his photophobia; he braves daylight to save Kirimi. Although he collapses right afterwards from exposure to sunshine, Kirimi loves him all the more for his willingness to brave that which he loathes so much to protect her.

The Nekozawa family traces their lineage to the Tokarev Dynasty in Russia (or it could be Romanov).

Ritsu Kasanoda (笠野田律, Kasanoda Ritsu)?, (Seiyū - Wataru Hatano)

Ritsu Kasanoda is the successor to the third generation master of the Kasanoda-gumi, the most powerful yakuza group in Kanto, Japan. He was raised at a young age to be the next leader so in effect most people see him as a very intimidating person and he has few friends because of it.

Indeed, he's most well known for his long red hair and scary-looking face. Since Kasanoda's features have been intimidating since birth, his father claimed he had the right face to become the most frightening yakuza boss in history and actually trained him to appear tough and unapproachable. Kasanoda therefore initially doesn't talk much, though he can be angered easily. Despite his outward appearance and upbringing, he actually tends to be a kind person who enjoys helping others.

There are several rumors associated with him too. For instance, if your eyes meet his, you'll suffer three months of nightmares. Also, if his shoulders bump into someone, he or she will be sent to the hospital. Finally, if someone tries to talk back to him, he or she goes straight to the graveyard. His classmates know him as the feared "human blizzard".

Kasanoda initially seeks to apprentice under Morinozuka, hoping to become as respected and admired as he, despite Morinozuka possessing - to paraphrase Kasanoda's own words - "a face as intimidating as that of the guard dogs of Hell." He suffers some humiliations at the hands of the Host Club members, who steadfastly refer to him as "Casanova-kun" or "Bossa Nova-kun", all out of a desire to learn how to make friends and be able to have fun with people. Later experiences concerning a member of his household named Tetsuya show him that there are already people at his home who know his good side - they just didn't mention it because they knew he is not only kindhearted, but also shy and easily embarrassed.

Due to Kasanoda walking into a room too quickly, he has become the first person at Ouran High outside the host club to discover that Haruhi is a girl. Upon learning so, he falls in love with Haruhi and attends the Host Club as a customer. However, when he tries to admit his feelings to Haruhi, he is rejected with no ill intent (mostly due to Haruhi's complete lack of being able to read people properly), who considers him an understanding friend (this due to Kasanoda saying he had come to see her so Haruhi could talk to someone who knew her secret, so she could be at ease). Since Kasanoda has been told by Kyoya that Haruhi must appear to be male for 'special reasons', he resolves to not cause her any trouble by publically stating they'll be friends forever, so she won't have to worry about being thought odd by associating romantically with him. Kasanoda, of course, does not realize that the 'special reasons' consist entirely of Haruhi's debt to the club.

Ever since that incident in the host club though, his desire to have friends is fulfiled when everyone in the host club (hosts and customers) agree to become his friends. In volume 9, he gave Haruhi a tomato plant as a gift. Also, an update on his situation indicates that he's joined the Gardening Society of the school. However, his characteristic fierce looks still meant that even animals were afraid of him.

Fujioka Family

Ryoji "Ranka" Fujioka (藤岡 涼二, Fujioka Ryōji?, 蘭花 Ranka), (Seiyū - Takehito Koyasu)

Haruhi's father works at an okama (cross dressing) bar. He says that he was originally bisexual, but turned to cross-dressing after his wife's death because he could never love another woman. In contrast to Haruhi's practicality and lack of interest in material things, he is rather bad with money, and buys girly clothing for Haruhi in the hopes of getting her to dress more cute. He even repacks her suitcase for an overnight trip in episode 8 of the anime, replacing the clothes she had packed with a dress.

Haruhi's stubborn self-reliance causes her father to worry about her a lot; he would like to be more involved in her life and do more things for her, but she rarely lets him. However, the two of them do have a clearly loving relationship. While her father would like to be able to take care of Haruhi, it seems that often Haruhi ends up taking care of him instead, as shown in a flashback in which a very young Haruhi refuses to allow him to go to parents' day at her school because she wants him to stay home and rest instead.

There is a marked similarity between Haruhi's father and Tamaki, upon which several other members of the Host Club have commented. Partly because of this, and partly as a result of Tamaki's evident romantic affection for Haruhi, Ryoji has stated that he considers Tamaki an enemy, and seems to take some amusement in picking on him.

Kotoko Fujioka (藤岡琴子, Fujioka Kotoko)?, (Seiyū - Mika Doi)

Kotoko Fujioka is Haruhi's mother, who died while her daughter was still very young (Haruhi remarked in the first episode that it has been ten years since her mother died, which puts her at around 6 years old at that time). It is known that she was an attorney at law and that Haruhi takes after her in some ways and that she remains Haruhi's great example. If the way Haruhi recalls her both in waking memory and in a dream is accurate, she was dedicated and a loving mother who wished the very best for her family. One would assume she was also somewhat open-minded in order to live with and love her husband, "Ranka", who has stated that Kotoko was both beautiful and intelligent, but also reveals that she was apparently a closet fan of the St. Lobelia's Zuka Club of her day.
