The sea sighed gently up and down the beach, covering and uncovering sand, stones, shells and a set of black hooves. The horned Nequus walked slowly along the waterline, his bright blue eyes on the horizon and the sunset that he walked slowly towards.
There was no particular purpose to his walk, a fact that he took great satisfaction in. He was here now, after all the travelling and the fear he'd reached the ocean.
It still felt almost unreal.
The long-limbed creature paused briefly to study a tiny crab that was scuttling about by his hooves, scavenging for particles of food brought in by the shushing water. As a retreating wave tugged at the sand under him, the Ichsa stallion set off once more making sure he stepped over the industrious little crustacean rather than on it.
This, the tendril-winged creature felt, was going to be another good day.

The tread of hoofbeats was muffled by the soft grass as the gold-coated Reya walked slowly across the cliff. She suddenly turned and began walking in the other direction, pacing back and forth. With a sigh she stopped, turning her head to gaze out at the ocean, calm for the moment. I should head back soon.. But... She sighed again, an ear flicking in agitation, and began to pace again. Her tree called to her, but the ocean's call was just as strong, if not stronger. To leave, or to stay? This was the quandary that presented itself to the mare, which irritated her greatly. She wasn't used to thinking on a problem like this for more than a few moments.
She suddenly paused in her pacing, her pale green eyes catching sight of a dark blue spot on the beach headed away from her. "Hmm.." Her eyes ran over its slender body, its delicate tendril wings, and the singular horn that spiraled from its forehead. An Ichsa. Hmm.. She fluttered her wings slightly and snorted, watching it progress slowly across the beach. Haven't seen one of those in quite some time.. But, I suppose they're not all the same as he. With an equine shrug, she carefully unfolded her wings and started at a slow canter towards the edge of the cliff. At the very edge, she carefully placed her hooves where she wouldn't slip, and propelled herself off, veering to the side. She glided along fairly straight before angling her wings downward, silently making her way towards this blue Ichsa, whose gender remained unknown to her. She floated along a few more moments before extending her front hooves, planting them firmly in the soft sand and taking a few steps forward to complete her landing, then fluttered her wings a bit before folding them at her sides once more. "Well hello, friend. What brings you to the beach on this beautiful winter day?"

The stallion started slightly at the voice and turned around to see what it had come from. "Hi," he said with a slight smile, dipping his muzzle in greeting as his eyes came to rest on the gold and white Reya. The curving-horned female had little braids in her mane; they were really quite pretty.
"I live here," he informed the mare, his smile getting a little stronger as his gaze wandered around to take in his surroundings once more. "I came from up north, arrived 'ere a few weeks ago, I think. I ain't really been keepin' track of the days t' be honest."
Returning his gaze to the other Nequus, the Ichsa stallion smiled again. "Name's Maurice, nice t' meet y'."
Surprisingly enough, it actually was. Even though she'd startled him with her soundless arrival and even though she possessed a brutal weapon on her brow she wasn't a frightening figure. Something had changed in him for the better, the equine creature felt.

She dipped her muzzle in a polite greeting, a smile present on it, her pale green eyes studying him carefully. "Well, if you live here, then I suppose I'll be seeing a lot more of you in times to come. I came from up north too," she explained, flicking an ear. "My name is Cressida, and it's a pleasure to meet you, Maurice." She bowed her head slightly to be polite, then raised it again. She studied their surroundings now; the ocean, the sand, the small stones, the...crab? She blinked several times, peering down curiously at the small crustacean as it scuttled sideways across the sand. She snorted a bit, then focused on the blue stallion again. She flicked an ear idly, her head tilted slightly. He doesn't seem that bad, rather amiable. "So Maurice, I take it you hadn't seen the ocean before you came here a few weeks ago?"

The Ichsa stallion shook his head. "No, I hadn't. Came a damn long way t' find it but it'd worth every step. Beautiful place an'... hum... I dunno. Somehow better than other places I seen that are beautiful. Kinda welcoming I suppose, even when it's all rough an' stormy." Maurice smiled again and gave an equine shrug, eloquently expressing his lack of eloquence on the subject.
"Cressida's a nice name by the way, suits y'," the blue-bodied Nequus went on as seawater washed up over his hooves again. It might be nice to see this Reya again; pretty name, pretty voice, pretty mare and so far apparently amiable. Not half bad so far as neighbours went.

"I haven't seen it in quite some time," she added thoughtfully, gazing out at the waves before stepping closer, so she was able to feel the water as it rushed over her hooves, then back towards the sea. "Yes, the ocean is always a thing of beauty. Not living, although it very well seems to be, the way it moves and responds and changes due to weather and such. It can also seem alive in how one holds memories of it from long ago, and what it represents," she sighed as she gazed out at the rolling waves, thinking more about the past than the present.
"Thank you, Maurice. You've a nice name, as well. I don't think there'd be a better name to suit you," she said with a smile directed towards the stallion. He seemed very nice, much better than that jerk from her foalhood. She took a few steps closer towards the sea, studying the water at her feet. "So," her gaze was fixed on the water as she spoke, "even though you only recently arrived, this is your home?"

The blue stallion smiled and nodded to the Reya's sentiment. It did feel alive. The gentle sigh of the waves seemed like the breath of the world and the smell of it was at once more pure than anything else he had ever smelt and more intoxicating than any of the forbidden things he had eaten as a colt.
"Yea, this is 'ome," he said as the mare's question filtered through to him. If this wasn't then nowhere was and he didn't like that idea. Travelling and seeing new sights was fine but you had to have somewhere to come back to or what was the point?
"Nowhere else 'as ever felt quite... right but it does 'ere. I do 'ere," the blue-eyed Ichsa went on with a distant smile. A moment later, he gave a shake and his smile became crooked with wry amusement at himself. "Eh, an' if y' not careful I'll start t’ wax poetic or something stupid like that an' I've never tried before so it'll prob'ly suck."

She smiled at him, ear flicking. "Yes, I'll probably be seeing more of you around here, then. Which, I think, isn't a bad thing." She bobbed her head slightly in a nod. "No where really felt like home to me, either. But this does, and I think it's due to my mother more than anything else," she said rather distantly. But his last statement brought forth a chuckle from the gold-coated mare. "I'm not very talented at poetry myself, so between the two of us it'd be a very entertaining event if we both started to spout it," she said with a laugh, flicking the ends of her muscular tails.

Well, she seemed to have a good first impression of him too and that was always a good thing. Bad first impressions, the Ichsa had discovered on many occasions, were quite hard to shake. He didn’t want somebody he’d be seeing on a reasonably regular basis to have lingering false notions about him, anymore than he wished to have any of his own about her.
Still, things were going well and it didn’t seem as though they were going to start going downhill anytime soon.
He smiled in return to the Reya's chuckle. "Yea, I can imagine that. Prob'ly not somethin' I should try in the first place, yea? Can't imagine findin' decent rhymes an' similes an' that. Closest I'll ever come is rhymin' by accident in normal conversation I 'spect," the stallion concluded with a soft snort of amusement.

"Being able to talk more eloquantly would be neat, but until that miracle happens I'll veer steer of creating poetry," she said with another chuckle. "And yes, the closest I ever come to poetry is rhyming by accident, too."
She gazed out at the rolling waves, peculiarly calm for winter. She caught herself a few moments later absent-mindedly staring out across the ocean, thinking of the past, so she shook her head a bit to rid herself of the depressing thoughts. With the flick of an ear, she turned her head to gaze at her new blue companion, pale green eyes peering at him curiously. "Do you know of any others that live around here? I've been so alone for so long, I want to see as many others as possible. I feel like I've missed so much!" She said with a laugh, although the feeling wasn't very amusing. Maybe she missed her by staying away for so long..?

Maurice glanced about at his surroundings and gave a shrug. "I only seen one other 'ere abouts in flesh but I seen tracks from more than just 'er. Still; the one I met’s an Ichsa mare called... err... Chandara I think. Cool tail she got; kinda like a Rit's. She's... she's a bit odd but not a bad sort I guess."
Now there was an example of first impressions gone awry. Not that he really held anything against the mare, nor had it been her fault or even his really. Jus' got off on the wrong hoof... Ah well, doin' fine with Cressida an’ we were getting’ on alright in the end.
The curly-maned Nequus smiled at the Reya before him. "You a people person then?" Company, in Maurice's opinion was pleasant, but not something he wanted all the time. Being forever with other creatures would be difficult unless they too valued silence, not feeling the need to call it awkward and fill it every second of the day.

The gold-coated mare looked about as well, mostly at the sand this time instead of the water. "All right, that's good to know," she stated with a bob of her head. "I've never seen a nequus with an abnormal tail before, that sounds very interesting." Her muscular tails twitched as she pictured an ichsa mare with a rit tail.
"A people person?" She blinked, brought back to reality. "Well, I don't know. It's nice to meet others and see old friends, but I wouldn't want to be surrounded by others for too long a time, that would wear on my nerves, I think," she said with a bob of her head. "Being alone so long has gotten me accustomed to not being around others for long periods of time. If I suddenly went from solitude to being surrounded by others, it would be an awkward and irritating situation, I think."

The stallion smiled faintly at her words and nodded his head in agreement. "Yea, I agree there. I like people but I like t' be alone too. I like my peace an’ there's some things that are jus'... jus' things that are private I suppose. Silly things some of the time, I'll admit that, but there it is I guess. Sometimes... I guess y' don' know who y' really are unless there's nobody else there. Did that made any sense at all?"
The blue-bodied Ichsa was fairly sure that he had just been talking complete gibberish. Sometimes he wished that he could pass on the concepts that were so very clear in his mind until he muddled them by putting them into concrete thoughts and words.
Maurice bobbed his head and gave a faintly embarrassed smile. "Any time y' want me t' stop makin' a hash of bein' profound, jus' let me know and I'll shut it."

"Yes," she agreed with a chuckle, "I feel the same way, and it does make sense. There are certain things that are best to keep to ones' self than to share with others whom one may not know that well." With a toss of her mane, she flipped the irritating locks over to the other side of her neck. This ichsa was definately much nicer than the one she knew when she was just a foal. Not all horses, she decided, live up to the stereotypes for their breed.
"I don't mind if you try to be profound, I can usually decipher other's meanings," she said with a smile. "I know that I'm not much of a conversationalist myself, I can never think of anything to talk about." She laughed, then adjusted her leathery wings a bit and folded them back against her sides. Yes, this one seemed a good horse to know. "So, if you don't think I'm pestering and don't mind the question, do you have any family?"

Ah. Bugger. Well it had been inevitable that somebody would want to know at some point. Oh well, it couldn't be helped really, no point in trying to evade the question. "Na, I don' mind the askin'," the blue stallion said with a not-quite smile. "I do... sorta. I dunno where they are though an' I'd rather keep it that way. We... we didn' get on s' well."
The horned stallion gave an equine shrug. "Siblings didn' like me 'cos my father weren't the same stallion as theirs. Mother... I dunno," another shrug, "she liked me at first but... seemed t' go off me as I got older. Honestly I turned into a complete arse an' deserved whatever they or anyone else gave me,” and there were parts of that too herb blurred to remember. “I left the 'erd in the end," circumstances of that definitely didn't need to be revealed. If she knew what he'd... Well, she'd probably skewer him and rightly so.
Ah. He'd stopped talking. Where had he been? Oh yes, leaving. "So yea," the Ichsa went on awkwardly. "I left an' I haven' exactly looked back. I'm better off without them an' they're better off without what I was when they knew me."
That had probably been more information than the wonderfully adorned mare had been looking for come to think of it. She'd only asked if he had family, going on and on like that hadn't been necessary.
