The beginning
Yesterday a scientist handed me a bright orange feather.
It's supposed to grow into a child... Well, I've seen so many strange things I'm not surprised anymore.
The name of the children (or Hououza) is Carlos, but I'll call him Carl.
The feather is warm to the tough and soft. I'm keeping it on my desk for now and staring at it while I write.
I've read a bit about Hououzas, apparently they're influenced by the moon or something like that.
Luckily I like midnight strolls.

Party time
I found out the place where the Hououzas live and went to have a look.
So far I haven't seen any other child, but I'll stick around and see if I can see one... after all, I want to see what I'm going to get.
Apparently these children have wings. If it's true, I'm going to really envy Carl. Imagine, soaring high in the sky with the wing on your face, above clouds and everything...
The feather now is tied to a string around my neck. I wouldn't want to lose it in the crowd.
There's a July party starting today or tomorrow.
I'm not American so I don't care much about the holiday, but I'm not going to miss the fireworks and the fun!
Besides, this could be just the right time to meet another Hououza.

Fireworks
The July party is really good.
I didn't have idea there were so many Hououzas... they're beautiful, with soft wings they use to flutter around.
I've seen the Lussier woman who runs the place and organized everything, although I haven't spoken with her yet because she was very busy with the party.
Apparently more Hououzas are going to arrive soon.
She also said she'd give out free sparklers to all the children, and this worries me a bit because feathers are highly inflammable. I think I'll keep it somewhere safe until Carl is old enough.
Speaking of Carl, he's probably going to transform at the next full moon, which is in a couple of weeks. It's a pity he'll miss most of the party...

Today I've spoken for the first time with a Hououza.
I was wandering around the park, looking at the people and envying those with a grown child. They looked so happy together, and I had only a feather to talk to.
I was thinking about Carl, and how he'll become, and if I'm the right person to take care of him.
Then I realized there was someone else who was standing alone, watching the brilliant blue sky.
I walked nearer, and saw it was a child, a girl, with brilliant red hair and a light green dress. She was twirling a strand of hair with a hand, and seemes lost in her thought.
I approached her, but she didn't notice me, so I cleared my throat nervously and said, "Hi."
She turned slowly and replied, "Oh, hi!"
She was looking at me with curious brown eyes.
"Nice party, isn't it?" I blurted out.
"Yeah, suppose so. They gave me a sparkler too."
"Nice," I repeated again, as she showed it to me.
I felt a bit uncomfortable, as always when talking with strangers, and didn't know what to say.
"So, uh, who's your guardian?" I asked.
She looked at me for a few seconds, then replied "I haven't got any. I'm alone."
"Oh, sorry," I said. I felt stupid.
"You know, Carl was alone too, until I arrived." I showed the feather to the girl, who ran a finger delicately along it.
She looked weird, not sad, but as if she was lost in a world of her own.
"Do you want to come with me?" I asked quietly.
She looked me straight in the eyes, then smiled and nodded.
"My name is Gwena."

A trip
I had hoped, in a silly way, that Carl would transform into a child before I had to leave for my trip. I don't know how long I'll be away, and where exactly I'll go, it's going to be an adventure.
So I've packet my bags, added some extra child clothing and crossed my fingers. Hopefully everything will go well.
My friends asked me if I was sure I wanted to go, but I've made up my mind.
I just hope Carl is of adventurous kind and doesn't mind being dragged across half a continent for the remaining of the summer.
I've asked Gwena if she wanted to come with me, but she doesn't want to leave the city she lives in.
We'll be keeping in contact though, I've promised to write at least once a week to tell her how things are going, and I hope I can get her a nice souvenir.

Dear Gwena,
Just two words to let you know that everything is fine. I think Carl is ok too, but it's hard to tell with him, isn't it?
Here the weather is cold and it's raining a lot, but the place was definitely worth a visit.
It's full of ruins and all castles, I'm taking a lot of photos!
Most of these places are supposedly haunted, I've heard some pretty interesting ghost stories.
I miss you, and I wish you were here.

Dear Aiko,
Thank you for your letter and photo.
You said I could have the spare bedroom, so I've started decorating it. I've put some flowers around and cleared a wall, so I can tape my drawings there (I've put your photo for a start)
I wanted to take a photo of the park, it's really beautiful with all the lamps and people around, but I don't have a camera. So I decided to paint it.
I took the colours and brushes from a drawer in your study room, hope you don't mind it...
I like the result, but the painting is too big to fit in the envelope so I'll show you when you're back.
The July party is still going on, and guess what? I got a sparkler too!
I miss you too, but I don't want to leave this city because I've always lived here and I couldn't imagine waking up and not seeing the top of the trees from the window, not even for a day.

On holiday
When I woke up, the first thing I did was looking out of the window.
It was cloudy, and the wind was blowing fast through the trees outside, but luckily it wasn't raining...
I put on my jacket and walked out of the hotel without having breakfast. We were going to leave the city in the afternoon, so there wasn't much time left for shopping, but I absolutely wanted to get a present for Gwena and maybe something for Carl too.
I had a suspicion that Carl wasn't going to like shopping, so it was just as well that he was a feather at the present.
I bought a couple of cute plushies and some clothes for me, and I was about to go back to the hotel and have lunch when it started raining again.
Quickly, I ran into the nearest shop, hoping it was just a brief spell.
"Good afternoon, young lady," said the shopkeeper. "How may I help you?"
I looked at him and jumped. He was a pale, old man, cloaked in black.
"Good afternoon..." I mumbled. "I was... looking for a present for a boy."
Only then I looked around the shop. There were lots of dark, wooden shelves, covered with strange items. Most of them were carvings, but there were a few jewelley items and paintings. I approached the nearest brooch. It was silvery, with a large red stone in the middle. Bloody red, I would have said.
"A boy?" asked the shopkeeper. "I might have just the thing..." He fumbled behind the counter a bit, then produced a small doll.
It was a vampire.
I shivered.
"It's nice... Yes..." I croaked. The place was getting on my nerves. "I'll buy it."
The shopkeeper wrapped it in black paper and handed it to me.
"Here you are," he said with a strange smile.
I hurried out of the shop, ignoring the rain that was still falling around me, glad to be out of that shop. Then I laughed suddendly, feeling silly. Of course, vampires didn't exist... I had just been captured by the eerie atmosphere of the place.

Midnight chat
I dialled the number and drummed my fingers on the table absent-mindedly.
"Mh. Hallo?" Her voice sounded far away and sleepy.
"Gwena? This is Aiko."
"Aiko! Hi! I didn't expect you to call..." Sound of stifled yawns.
"Is it night there?"
"Ye-ees..."
"Sorry... I didn't have time to write this week, so I thought I'd call. Everything ok?"
"Mh-h..."
Sounded like a yes to me.
"Good... good... We're seeing a lot of stuff here, and of course full moon is next week..."
Silence.
"Well, good night..."
"'night Aiko"
Feeling a bit stupid, I put down the phone.
