Yuumei Yukibiri: A Dark/Light Promise

Night had fallen, the darkness quickly seeping into the small bedroom, covering the hardwood floor, turning peach walls a dark gray, only to be pierced by a small lantern that emitted a soft reddish glow. It casted its light upon a small bedroll, containing a sleeping young girl of approximately twelve years. Kneeling beside her, almost like a guardian angel, was a young boy of the same age.
“Seiya-chan? Are you awake yet? Please be okay.” the young boy asked, tentatively prodding the area of blanket over the girl’s stomach. Though she didn’t move, a little giggle escaped her. Realizing what she did, the girl sat up on the bedroll, “Hee hee, quit it Taiyou-kun! Of course I’m okay. Why wouldn’t I be? Unless… Yami came and took over my body again…”
Taiyou’s face went blank.
“So it wasn’t a dream was it…” she whispered, making it sound more like a statement than a question.
“No. It wasn’t a dream.” He annunciated.
“NO! What did she do? Who did she kill? I thought I was stronger than this! Why me?” Seiya cried in distress.
“It’s not your fault that m-, that she possesses you Sei-chan! It’s all because of that horrible demon, Yami! You didn’t ask her to possess you! Don’t blame yourself!” Taiyou exclaimed, preparing to stop her from doing anything crazy.
Suddenly, Seiya’s eyes widened with fear, “My mother. Yami killed my mother. The way she threatened to.”
Taiyou simply looked away, unable to say anything.
“NOOOOOOOO!!!! Not Mother! Nooo!!!!” she wailed, sobs wracking her chest, “It’s my fault… It’s all… my fault…” she whispered, “I couldn’t hold her back… The blackness… it was too strong… She pushed me into it… Black tendrils of… nothing… so cold… icy…bitter… empty… it
wouldn’t end… torturing… Terrifying…” Instinctively, her body curled up into a fetal position, shuddering in fear.
Taiyou pulled her back into a sitting position, and wrapped his arm around her protectively. “I’ll stay by your side forever Seiya-chanchan. I promise, so the darkness will never take you again. Through rain or shine, good or bad, dark or light, I will be there for you.” He swore.
Seiya shook her head wildly, and seemed to retreat within herself, “No…. You can’t. What if Yami hurts you? What if she never goes away? No… If she kills you… I’ll never live with myself. You can’t do this Tai!”
Taiyou shook his head, “My choice. I’ll fight her for you. I’ll exorcize Yami from your body.” Without a second thought, he grabbed his trusted dagger that she had given him long ago, pricked the tip of his left thumb and traced his promise in the air. As if there was an invisible surface in front of him, the blood flowing from the wound seemed to float there, suspended in the air, defying gravity. Once again, he grabbed the dagger, but instead pricked his right pinky tip, and touched the wounds together so the blood mixed together. A bright flash of white light signaled the end of the ritual.
Taiyou grinned at Seiya, “No going back now Sei-chan.”
