Hey everyone, Names Alicia, 18 years old (next month), I just found out about a week ago I'm pregnant biggrin

At this point I'm 6 weeks along, and I found out about a week before I found out I was pregnant that I have diabeties type 2.....

so heres my question

Any of you have diabeties during pregnancy as well??? Everything go fine?

They have me peeing on ketostix, they have me poking myself 4 times a day, they have me eating EXACTLY what they tell me, and eating 6 times a day (which is hard for me to want to eat that much) and just a ton of precautions to make sure the pregnancy is going well... they also said I'll have TONS of ultrasounds and stuff.. so they make it seem really scary....

I'm going to do anything I can to help this baby be healthy, but I'm worried maybe there could be problems they arent telling me about???

So yeah, anyone go through this?? or know someone who has??
I'd like to know how the pregnancies went.

Thanks smile

First off - congratulations heart

I don't know whether I can be of any help but, I had Gestational Diabetes with both my pregnancies. Gestational is when diabetes are diagnosed early pregnancy and it lasts until the baby is born. With my first I was put on insulin and had to inject myself 3 times a day and my second I was able to diet control.

During my pregnancies I had to test my own blood glucose levels so often my fingertips looked like rough sandpaper, had tons of blood tests and ultrasounds to keep an eye on things, it seemed I was always at my Doctors.

There were no major problems, both my daughters were born by ceasarian 3 weeks premature but both weighed in at around 9lbs. With diabetes you tend to have larger babies, but neither of them suffered from any adverse health problems.

I have recently been diagnosed with diabetes type 2 and that is being kept under control so far with diet and exercise. Hope this is of some help.

I have not had this experience, so I'm not too much help. But I would ask my doctor for any books he could recommend, pamphlets, videos....any sort of resource they had to get you informed.

Google, or some sort of search, about this situation. You will find tons of information and maybe even some email groups of other women with the same situation while pregnant.

I'm sorry I cant be of any help.

Congratulations!! smile

thanks everyone

@mystic - yeah they told me that my baby could be bigger than a normal one but right now they've got the blood sugar levels and whatnot under control *prays they stay that way* .. they caught it so early that it might not be a problem, at least I hope, but I just wanted to know about others who have had it... thanks biggrin

Being overweight I'm pretty much on GD "watch" They took my blood draw glucose I took a glucose tolerance test early and will take another when I'm 20-22 weeks just to make sure something doesn't crop up.

Everything I've read says as long as you are monitored and follow your regimen in eating and glucose testing and insulin injections you should be fine.

The major problem is that a pregnant body has all kinds of different hormones that cause insulin resistance even in women who don't present with GD or regular Diabetes. So if you're diabetic AND pregnant you have even higher insulin resistance which probably leads to more need for insulin injection.

You're at "risk" for a larger baby because your baby will probably recieve more sugar than usual and his body will process those sugars into fats. He won't be overweight but just bigger. Generally toward the end they'll keep an eye on you to either make sure he's not getting to big or to schedule a C-section.

Here is a good article on it all:

I had Gestational Diabetes with my two children. I followed the Doctor's advise, and everything went very well. Both were full term healthy babies. Keeping to the diet is a real key. The issue is keeping your blood sugar under control so the baby doesn't get too big. But, I'm sure you know that. Don't hestiate to PM me if you have questions.

Good luck, and I wish you a happy healthy baby!

thank you thank you...

I went in for a check up to see how I was doing on my bloodsugar and they said its going great.. but the morning fasting levels are a bit high (like 92-95, should be 90) .. they are talking about possibly putting me on pills or insulin.. and its only a few over! Is that really that big of a deal?? If they put me on pills or insulin I'll have to be on it forever right?? Won't my body get used to it and become kind of dependant?? Anyways, its scary for me... I try not to think about it, because I think it'll be ok.. but its bothering..

Also, anyone have to do ketostix??? if so, did you EVER get your results back to negative??? I always get trace like everyday, and everything I do to fix it just doesnt seem to work.... anyone have any ideas? or is it dangerous to stay at trace??

Greetings!

I can probably help answer some of your questions. I too am Diabetic (type 1) and have been for almost twenty years. I now have two childern, both boys who are healthy and happy.

My first son, Kieran came as a surprise to us, and at the time I was horribly out of control. But with the right OB/GYN and a doctor who specialized in diabetes and pregnancy, I managed to get back on track and have a good pregnancy.

My second son as well came as a surprise (He was a IUD baby) and again I was terribly out of control. I had a little more difficulty in this pregnancy, when Xandyr was born, his blood sugars were 20, he had to be put into infant ICU for a week before he was okay.

My suggestion is work as closely as you can with your doctors. Pay special attention to your diet, but don't let it control you. And be sure you take your vitamins.

Congratulations and if you ever feel like chatting or just want to talk, please PM me. I'm always happy to chat. smile

First Congrats!

While I was pregnant I developed gestational diabeties also; but I was only on a strict diet. Both my son and I are at risk for diabeties type 2. While I was pregnant my doctor would always schedule me for monthly ultrasounds to monitor the babies growth. Due to the diabeties he was always larger than normal. Luckly I delivered early, if I had went full term he would have been huge.

My doctor always told me to watch my eating and stay away from sugars. I had to watch my weight and eat every three hours. Other than that everythig was fine. Sometimes I would get light headed or have really bad headaches when I ate something with sugar.
