So I read the book Tend and Befriend by Shelly Taylor and it changed a lot about the way I looked at the world.

(Here's a google link for you, if you don't want to take the time to google it yourself. wink http://www.google.com/search?q="Tend+and+Befriend

She talks a lot about how differences in women's psychology and health have been pretty much ignored in the medical and psychology fields for many years. I figured I'd post a few things that she talks about and if people come across any other differences between the two sexes (BESIDES THE OBVIOUS SEXUAL ORGANS. >.> Smart aleck.) I would love to see them posted here. wink

One of the main premises of the book is the fact that female rats do not respond to stress in the way that males do. In fact, their reactions do not correlate with the typical fight or flight stress response. (OMG do not tell me that women react to adrenaline like men do, so Taylor is obviously wrong. There's more to hormones and biochemistry than that.)

Instead of fighting or running away, as a male rat typically does when placed in stressful situations, female rats appear to instead create social networks and GROOM one another.

And scientists ignored this for generations, using only male rats in their studies of stress behavior because female rats don't 'react the right way'.

Ho Cow, that's some crazy stuff to my mind. Here, lets just eliminate this entire gender from our studies because it doesn't do what it's supposed to. o.O

Another issue is heart attack studies. Turns out that the treatment that works best for men does not work very well at all in women. This is because while men tend to have blocks in main arteries, where they are easily removed by surgery, women tend to have many blockages in smaller veins, where the typical bypass surgery is not as effective. I haven't heard much more about this than that. If anyone has more information about it, I'd love to read about it, I'm just too lazy to search. XD

What the hell?!!
Rofl, so if a bunch of female rats sees a cat coming after them, they just start stroking eachother?!

Give the Scientists a break, dear - I mean, how the hell is that suppost to work in RL?

If you're on a train track with a 300 Tonne freight train hauling anvils coming at you at 200 miles an hour, would your first thought be to start grooming your friends?
That would be what they mean by "reacting the wrong way" - if you sit there and comb your friend's hair, you die and your Genes are removed from The Pool.

eek OK, that's interesting. *adds it to list of facts* Now I have 56 interesting facts!

That is seriously messed up, though. Why do the rats groom each other in the face of an oncoming train? lol

There is more to the 'Fight or Flight' reaction than the text book 'adrenaline' reaction. (Please note that all textbook definitions at this point in time, are in fact, MALE reactions to stress.) Note the 'fight' part of the 'fight or flight'. Please educate yourself before saying something silly.

Right...
So you suggest the subjects fight the incoming train?

lol, seriously, I'm confused; how can a Tend and Befriend reaction to stress be usefull for survival for the sorts of stress Animals are likely to get in the Environment?

Lacking imagination, they would very rarely be capable of forseeing a coming disaster, and so would only have minutes at most to make a descision reguarding what to do in the situation.

In which case, asside from keeping the young ones from getting panicked, there isn't much point, since it won't directly affect whether or not the survive the situation.

You mean "refrain from asking questions or expressing your lack of understanding until you understand everything you want to ask about"?

What's the point in that?

Learning is all about making bold statements and getting them wrong - nobody ever learns anything of value by sitting back and playing the "enlightened" person who won't agree or dissagree with anything (they'd call this "respecting other people's opinions").

How dare you make a Topic for the purposes of asking people about the subject matter and then tell them to go elsewhere until they know everything about the questions you put forth?

I am saying that I'm not interested in your negative comments. I am looking to explore this topic, not have a troll come in and tell me it is a stupid idea.

"Negative comments"?
lol, if you don't make a Hypothesis testable, it isn't Science.
Hence the controversy about Vacuum Energy and Hawking Radiation.

If you intended not to listen to anyone who addressed problems with what you're saying, then how can you possibly have a discussion about it?

Well, first off, I didn't say anything about supporting other people in times of stress being a stupid idea.
All I was doing was illustrating a point - Tend and Befriend isn't directly constructive in situations where a specific action is required in order to avoid danger.

The way you worded the Researchers' justifications for using only Male Rats to test for direct situations was as if they were being Sexist, when quite obviously they'd have used all Female if Male rats displayed this reaction.

((Also, erm... when you say you aren't interested in "negative comments", how comes you ignored all the contributions of my post except the single line when I lost my temper? sweatdrop ))
