So you Decided you wanted open a shop of your own but you can't get your head around how to make it work? well here I shall go through with you how I made, maintain and make my shop work. It really is quite simple and if you place enough effort in you do get many great results!

So here we are at Lesson one and starting with the basic building blocks we need to run a successful shop. First of all we need to ask ourselves some questions!

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. What Shall I sell?

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Why do I want this Shop?

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Do I have the time and energy to run this shop?

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. How will I lay it out?

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. and Last but not least, How will I get publicity?

There were these groovy pair of socks that I had wanted for some time but getting them seemed impossible as they continued to rise in price and I was not getting gold fast enough to keep up. So I thoguht to myself, I can do art and do it quite well so I'll sell it for gold and get those socks!

As I was on holidays and work wasn't that busy, I decided I had enough time to do some art. So I jumped on the Requests and Commissions forum and posted a topic there.

As I mozed about other shops I realised the ones I was more interested in looking at were the ones with cool banners and grpahics. I myself had never considered doing that but seeing how much of an impact it had on me I decided to try my hand out on photoshop.

As I continued on I found that business was getting increasingly slow. However we shall adressed this issue in Lesson 2

So the basics then?

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.well first of all you need to be able to sit down and think about why you want to open your shop. Is it because you are bored or you want more gold or items? This is the best way to of maintaining your shop as you know what you want!

Another thing is if you can maintain a level in which you complete art and to a standard you can put out everytime. These things are really critical when considering to open a shop. It isn't that hard if you are dedicated enough!

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Now that we have all the thinking bits out of the way however, let's move on to creating your shop.

The best way after thinking of a cool title that'll catch the gaian's attention is to so through and decided on a contents that way you know how many posts you'll need. then go through and reserve as many posts as you think you shall need to avoid any breaks from spammers and bumpers... this is important for a professional layout!

It's as simple as that!

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. now that you have done that we need to consider getting us some banners. These make for a nice layout making the over effect one of professionalism. The best way is to make one in photo shop. With a bit of bold colour and simple use of lines you can make really professional banners. Consider the one for this tutorial. Here's the break down.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. After making all this you need to place some examples into your shop. this is done with simple codings. Here are some examples of ways to show off images.

1) Simply place images

This is Where it gets difficult. There is much more to owning an art shop than just setting it up. You need to make sure it is running, the floors are swept and it is locked up for the night!

In this lesson I shall be going through all the fine points of making sure your business soesnt become flat.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Point 1: Sell Yourself~ Yes! This is almost essential! When you are getting none in, go looking for it! There is a chance you may be knocked back but don't take it to heart. There are many gaians out there litterally begging for art so go find them. One way is to just search through the Requests and Commissions forum. However, another way to find what you're looking for is to look for tagged forums. Just type "commissions" into the forum search bar and you'll come up with a whole stack.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Point 2: Tag Your Topic ~ Another important point. When you are editting old posts the tags you placed on your topic disappear! So mae sure when you finished updating a post that you go back and retag your topic!

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Point 3: Trade Art and Links ~ Find an artist you like and try and do an art trade with them. If not try and trade links offering to link them if they link you. IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not try to harass them for art or a trade. The best way to go about it is to send them a PM saying something like, "Hi there. I was looking through the "insert whatever forums here" and I saw your shop. I think its great and I would really like to put your link in my shop."

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Point 4: Post Your Art~ Best place to put your art is in the Picture Post Forum. People there are actually interested in seeing art and there's a good chance you'll pick up some business there! It is a great way to get noticed! Another thing is to send some artworks to Going Postal Your art is sure to noticed there particuarly if you become featured. So try your hand out and keep that side of Gaia running biggrin

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Point 5: Keep Active ~ Make sure your forum looks clean and isnt too cluttered. As well as this keep a record of all the art you have sold and make it available for viewing. This way customers have a chance to view everything you have done. If you have many different styles then they'll be able to see that! It also shows them how dedicated you are and that you do have experience particuarly if you start to get a heap up there!

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Point 6: Have Special Offers ~ if there is a season use it! Have maybe 10% off all couple during the month of feburary for couples or all Easter pictures get a free chibi lineart. Make some gimmicks and sales to keep the customers interested!

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Point 7: Don't give up. This is very important. If you are really interested in owning a successful artshop you need to make sure you keep it running. It does pay off!
