Alright well this has been bugging me for quite some time. Where did the name Bowie come from? I am pretty sure he gave himself that name, so he wouldn't be mixed up with Davey Jones, but does anyone know where he got the last name? I mainly ask because I am related to a David Bowie, not the cool one, but a historic hunter dude in Texas history, and there is Jim Bowie, James Bowie, ect. So yeah... Anyone know...?

From Wikipedia
"Bowie's work has involved the creation of characters or personae to present to the world. The aspiring rock star needed to use a different stage name to avoid confusion with Davy Jones of The Monkees, so he chose the last name Bowie after the Alamo hero Jim Bowie and his famous Bowie knife. He pronounces Bowie to rhyme with Joey"

Guess he didn't like it that much though... He changed how its said. From booy, to bowy.

An uncle of mine, a dedicated Bowie fan, once read an interesting explanation for the reason behind the "Bowie" surname. Apparently, the reason that David chose the Bowie knife as his namesake was that he wanted the truth expressed in his music to "cut" like a Bowie knife. It makes sense when you consider the nature of his early work, especially in tracks like "Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed"--really raw, lyrically speaking, and sometimes even what one might call "brutally honest."
Of course, I have no solid evidence for whether or not this is true, but it struck me as pretty interesting. Another explanation I heard is that he chose it because "bowie" translates as "blond", and he has naturally blond hair. (Not as undeniably cool as the "truth cutting like a Bowie knife" explanation, but it's still a possibility. biggrin )
Or maybe it was a combo of several factors that caused Bowie to choose the name? It wouldn't surprise me if the "blond" translation was a partial reason for it...
