Cerberus Cerberus picture
Description
According to Horace, Cerberus possessed one hundred heads. Hesiod wrote that he had fifty, yet most sources agree to only three. The centre head was in the shape of a lion, while the other two heads were dogs or wolves heads. He was so vicious that even the gods feared him.
Origin
It is generally thought that Cerberus’s mother was Echidne, half-women half serpent, his father was Typhon or also known as Thyphonious, the most fierce of all monsters in Greek Mythology.
Cerberus had three brothers. They are Orphus which is a monstrous dog with two heads, the hydra and the chimera. Cerberus’s Egyptian equivalent is Anubis. Anubis is a guardian of the underworld, in Egyptian mythology, the jackal that guarded the tombs and leads the dead souls on to the afterlife. Another similar dog is Garm, guarding the house of deaths in Norse mythology. These monster/gods are probably inspired by dogs that haunted the battle field or feed off the dead bodies out of the grave yards.
Symbol
The three heads of Cerberus relate to the three fold symbol of the baser forces of life. They represent the past, the present and the future. Dante described Cerberus as “il gran vermo inferno,” thus linking this monster to the legendary worms and orms.
Role
Cerberus is the watch dog of the underworld or also known as hell. He is often pictured with Hades, his master. He can be found on the banks on the river Styx, where he had the task of eating any mortals who attempt to enter and any spirits who try to escape.
Magic
As Cerberus vehemently resisted Heracles barking furiously, his saliva dripped on the ground thus giving birth to a poisonous plant called aconite; thus named because it flourishes on bare rocks. It is also known as ‘hecateis,’ because Hecate was the first to use it. Medea tried to poison Theseus with it and the Thessalian witches used it in preparing the ointment that enabled them to fly. The modern name for aconite is wolfsbane.
Ancient Greeks and Romans placed a coin and a small cake in the hands of their deceased. The coin was meant as payment to Cahron who ferried the souls across the river Styx, while the cake helped to pacify Cerberus. This custom gave rise to the expression ‘to give a sop to Cerberus,’ meaning to give him a bribe or to quite a troublesome customer.
Stories
Cerberus is best known for playing a part in Hercules’s final labor. Hercules had to go to the underworld and bring Cerberus back to the surface of earth without using his arrows, sword or his club. Hercules grabbed Cerberus by the throat and dragged him to Mycenae through a crack in the surface of the earth. Having accomplished this Hercules dispatched Cerberus to guard one of the secret groves of Demeter but the dog eventually made his way back to Hades where he still guards the entrance to the underworld.
In another legend, Orpheus makes the same journey to the underworld to bring back his love, Eurydice. He manages to soothe Cerberus with his lyre.
In the Aeneid, the Trojan hero, Aeneas descends to Tartarous to visit his father Anchies. He is escorted by the Bybil of Cumae and upon encountering ‘huge Cerberus barking from his triple jaws, stretched at his enormous length in a den that front the gate,’ she throws him a cake seasoned with honey and poppy seeds. Now Cerberus, “his bristling with horrid snakes, opening his three mouths in the mad rage of hunger, snatches the offered morsel and spreads on the ground, relaxes his enormous limbs lies now extended at the vast length over the cave. Aeneas, now that hell’s keeper is buried in sleep, seizes the passage and swiftly over-passes the bank of that flood whence there is no return.”
Movies and more…
You may have seen Cerberus in the Disney movie Hercules. He played the same role as in the myths, guardian of the underworld.
He is also featured in a ps2 game called Kingdom Hearts. In this game Cerberus was called on by Hades to kill Sora and his companions. But Cloud, also starred in final fantasy VIII, was ment to kill Sora and Hercules but he was beaten by Sora and was saved by Hercules and Sora.
Fluffy out of Harry potter and the philosopher’s stone is not Cerberus. He is just a look alike but they both guard something of significance and fall asleep when music is played.

User Image Adam's Pondering Proverbs & Quotes

*note* This months quote, came as an idea from pwittygurl after she watched naruto episode...err 70 something or other....Anyway, ty!

"I wish i was a cloud, floating on a current to my destiny....But sometimes i wonder, is the cloud stuck on one air current, unable to change his destiny? or can it choose other paths? But maybe no matter what path he chooses, he will still end up going to the same destination."
~Shikamaru (Naruto ep. 70+?)

User Image pwittygurl's news journal

Dear readers,
and welcome to the February issue of the JellyNews. I know this month we all started a bit later then we thought in our preparations for the news, but life's been very busy (if not hectic) lately. So we've gone back to school, and all remembered one of two things, you A. hate school or B. you love it. Although i don't know how many takers we'd have on option B, it's still a possibility. Apart from all the homework, stupid teachers, stress that is caused, oral speeches and tests-- school probably isnt so bad. probably.

Anyways, a couple days ago was none other than Valentine's Day! I hope you all ate chocolate or got given something on the day! The admins gave us a present of their own with the opening of the Valentines event. But what's this??? only one event item? hmm.... it seems many users across the forums weren't too happy about that and the fact that the event item wasn't selling for much in the marketplace.

We also had the Gaiaversary ball, where users could test their knowledge of gaia's history and in return--a fire cracker event item (red, blue or *shock horror* red and blue!)

The donation items (monthly collectibles) were also released : the Celestial Wrap, the Dark Star, and the Celebrity Date. If these months items are a sign of things to come, then we better buckle in for the trip!

Also this month, the annual school swimming carnival was held at the jellyfishnews' local school, and the usual sports teams competed. The overall winners of the swimming cup were Terra house, with Stella, Hydra and finally Ignis trailing behind. Good news though! The jellyfish from the guild featured on Hydra's team banner and I hope to post a special bulletin conatining a photo of the very special piece of art. Altogether, we spent about a week working on it. Great job everyone involved!!

Also, we have started an event of our own in celebration of reaching 30 members and 1000 posts. but what's this? we have reached 40 members already since the event started!! xd Slowly, we hope to unfold the mysterious and *cough* plotline of our event *cough* keep watching for more news!
Ciao, Pwittygurl.

User ImageLisa garnet carnation's Gaian News

Good afternoon,my fellow jelly fish. This is Lisa garnet carnation of jelly fish News, bringing you the latest updates from the Gaia admin team. It's been a while since we've had a newsletter, so there's a lot of ground to cover. Here are the admins with some important bulletins:

--------------------------------------------------------

February is the puniest runt of a month, and we owe it our pity. While other months have 30 or 31 days, February weighs in at a pathetic 28 (or 29, when it's lucky). It contains only the flimsiest of holidays-- Groundhog Day? Ha! Valentine's Day? Yuck! Presidents' Day? Who!?

But what does this mean for you, the common Gaian? It means you've only got a few days left to get February's Monthly Collectibles! "Ah, I'll just wait 'til the 31st," you might say; guess what, buster? There is no 31st, and there's never gonna be one! Time is running out!

In case the mind-melting excitement of the Gaia Anniversary has made you forget what this month's Collectibles are, allow us to refresh your memory:
Quote:

Do you ever stare up at that majestical roof fretted with golden fire and think "hey, I want one"? Well, now we offer the Celestial Wrap, a gorgeous set of items inspired by the limitless night sky.

The Dark Star shuriken is a fearsome instrument of combat when held in the right hands. In the wrong hands, however, it's a recipe for an extremely painful disaster.

Oh my goodness, you've won a date with one of Gaia's hottest celebrities! The Celebrity Date lets you spend a day (or a lifetime) with one of the stars of All My Gaians, the hottest soap opera on television.

Click here to grab one of these items while you still can.

Despite it's puny, scrawny, good-for-nothingness, February brought us TWO small Gaia events. First, we had a gleefully saucy Valentine's Day kissing event, where you could make your avatar swap some pixelated spit (eew?) with all your friends. Those who kissed generously received a V-day reward: the heart-shaped Labu Necklace. You can still find 'em in the marketplace if you missed the event.

Just this weekend, we celebrated Gaia's 4th anniversary! We had a heartfelt speech from Lanzer, a special anniversary event forum, and a brain-tickling quiz about Gaia's past plot and events. We hope you got to participate! If you didn't make it to this year's anniversary ball, we'd like to cordially invite you to next year's 5th Anniversary Ball, which is sure to be even more magnificent.

Stay tuned-- we're already putting together more events for the upcoming year, and we hope to make them bigger and more fun than ever before.

The GStore has had some big updates lately! Since we're always concerned with the safety of our members, we have released some attractive new long-sleeved options to prevent you from perishing of exposure on those long, frostbitten February nights (Argh... February, my old nemesis). We've also added two beanies to keep your noggin warm. Here's a lovely image featuring several of our new items, some attractive people, and kittens (what more could you want!?):

We've also created a special Gaia 4th Anniversary t-shirt, featuring tons of your favorite Gaia NPCs. We offer this shirt as a memento of yet another wonderful year of Gaia Online, and we hope you'll wear it proudly! It's limited-edition, so they won't be here for long.

Check out the GStore for these any many other Gaia accessories.

• Word Bump has been updated to version 1.0! It now gives out 2 to 3 times the amount of gold as before, and you'll score much better items on bonus levels. Whoo hoo! Go tickle your brain with some word-bumpin'. NOW!
• During our 4th Anniversary Event, we unveiled the brand-new Gaia Newsroom. Now you'll be able to see the entire Gaia storyline in one convenient place. You can read our plot manga archive, check out every Weekly Comic, and read recaps of every plot event, written by Gaia's own Cindy Donovinh.
• Purchasing Collectibles and GStore items with is now easier than ever: you can now make credit card purchases without a PayPal account! You can still make your purchases through PayPal if you have a PayPal account, but you're no longer required to start one in order to buy stuff with your credit card. How convenient!

That's it for this week's newsletter, Jellys! Happy 4th anniversary! Let's make this Gaia's greatest year yet!
