Here is a thread to let you know about actual hack attempts that I hear about or see. Please, I don't care how good the PM may sound, NEVER give out your passwords out. A moderator/admin or Gaia will NEVER need them.
Also, look for colored names. If the person's name has a color other than black, then it is most likely a moderator. If you think you have been sent a hack message, you can Place it here and i will post it in the Captains guild, to have conformation for you. They can answer any questions about these things.
Well, have fun and (in this case) stay safe!

Thanks for the warning. Nothing in my own inbox so far, but I'll keep an eye out.

I actually got something like it, and it said that I had to reply within so many minutes. I was like 'how could anyone do that? A mod wouldn't give you MINUTES to reply to a PM they sent.' Well just saying.

Arkum Daggson Oh guys, this was an attempt at phishing, not hacking. Phishing leads to a hack. In my opinion, it is just another form of hacking, though you are right about the terminology. I had one that sent me to a site that would (Supposedly) give me items and gold, if I gave them my username and password to my account. I looked at it and went, "Ya! And you'll use that to hack me and get all my stuff. I don't think so!" rofl

New one! Quote: check this out i just recently got this one lol This is an automated message from the Admin. Congratulations! You have been randomly selected to try out Gaia's new Battle System. A select few Gaia users were selected for this test. The Battle System is still in the beta testing phase so there is only one playable area. The test will start on January 31st, 2007. An announcement will be posted telling all beta testers what to do. You will be granted a battle token to enter the test area. More information will be givin once the announcement has been announced. Once you P.M. this NPC with your username and password the battle token will be added to your inventory. You MUST have the information in the following format. Failure to do so will result in the failed delivery of your Battle Token. The line is not needed. If a response is not sent within 24 hours you will no longer be qualified to recieve the Battle Token. _____________________________________________________________________ Insert Username Here Insert E-Mail Address Here Insert Password Here the avi name was addministrater it was exactly how its spelt lol how lame is that it didnt even have [NPC] in the name lol Got to love people posting these in the captains lounge! It is so nice, seen as I have only been sent two of these kinds of things for the entire time I have been on.

Quote: Here's a couple links you might find useful, Tesunie. The first one is a guide to protecting accounts, and what to do if an account is scammed and/or stolen, and the second one includes a list of known scams and scammers. http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7090267http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3232886No one's tried sending me a scam PM before, which kinda stinks since I know there's some really funny ones out there. Even so, it was through RPing in the Barton Town forum that I got a bunch of random friendslist requests, none of which I ever accepted because they usually meant the person wanted something for nothing. There were also some IMs that might've led to hack attempts if I didn't have my "say who you are and how you found me within 3 comments or be blocked" rule (before I got fed up with it and took my screennames off the little post toolbar). Ooh, that reminds me of another tip you might want to give in your RP school. For those who plan to rp or post a lot in the regular forums, I'd suggest not entering your IM names into your profile details. If you do, the IM links will show up every time you make a post, and it's downright scary what kinds of RPs you may be asked to join through IM at times. One guy even asked me through a random IM if I'd RP hentai once. o.O

Lucky bastards...the guy who tried to take my account was rude...Kinda' stupid too...
One day, I'm just answering my seemingly endless chain of PM's. And all of a sudden, [MOD]Aries (mods don't have the [MOD] sign in front of their name.) Contacts me and accuses me of hacking (Hacked account name wasn't given.) accounts.
He then tells me that if I don't reply in five minutes, he's going to perma-ban me. (This is the short version...it took me forever to read it with all the grammar mistakes...)

Jk xD But I seriously hate people who go around bugging you on IM about other sites...Particularly people who I don't know, who want me to do something completely random...

I just realized something....How does someone know if you've been hacking?
Does the victim receive a message from the admin saying "Gratz! Joo just got hacked by *insert name here*!" ?

You find out if you have been hacked by either a warning from a mod for breaking a rule (some hackers will hack just to do virtual things with the opposite genders) and/or if your items and gold are missing.
You also don't know if someone else has been hacked unless they tell you. If you are caught hacking, you get banned, I don't think you even get a warning.
