It was yet another dreary, rainy day in the suburbs of London. The light filtered in dirty stained-glass windows, casting something like an ethereal glow in the dust that clogged the air. Tall, imposing shelves stood, rows upon rows of intimidating guards. A musty old sign criss-crossed the door, proclaiming the old corner library closed.

And yet, here they stood, two young-looking men, sitting on a table in the back, away from the windows. In fact, the pale, skinnier one was the librarian. He had a viable reason to be in the library at that particular time. The other, however, was just a passerby, it seemed.

In reality, Alastair and Lirak's relationship went back thousands of years, dur to unfortunate job placements and obligations. Just as the pale one glanced up, two feathery white wings shimmered out of thin air, a few stray plumes fluttering down in a vaguely heart shaped pattern. The other's eyes barely flicked up to the door as his own parchment-textured wings spread behind him in a much less glamorous fashion.

And there they sat, an angel and a demon, together. The demon had an old book in his hand, so covered in dust that the title was barely legible. Something in a foreign language, with a flowing goldenrod lettering.

Then, without a word, the book flared up in a slightly-too-red fire, ashes drifting to join the dust on the ground. The angel flinched back from the fire, but said nothing. He and Reese had made an agreement a few centuries ago, though Alastair was never quite sure what Lirak's half of the deal had been. After arguing with the demon over the contract, he'd felt quite befuddled. Alastair pushed this thought away and his eyes were drawn again to the flickering of yet another book. The demon across the table grinned, his slightly-too-perfect lips curling in a slightly-too-evil way. The self-made pyre flamed up again and Lirak's much-too-perfect smile softened as he watched the reflected embers in Alastair's golden eyes.

The ashes drifted to the floor, dusting the faintly glittering feathers.
