NAME Esen
MEANING Literally "the wind" in Turkish
GENDER Female
AGE 17
BIRTH PLACE Si Wong Desert, Earth Kingdom
OCCUPATION Sandbender. Earthbending student.
APPEARANCEEsen has no problem sticking out while walking the streets of Ba Sing Se. She is on the slender end of athletic, in terms of build, and of relatively average height for her age. Her skin is dark - darker than most complexions one may find in the capitol city of the Earth Kingdom - as are her features - save her eyes which are a lighter blue-gray.
Esen's chocolate brown hair is rather long and incredibly thick. It curls slightly at the ends and is, for the most part, left down, although the portions that frame her face are pulled back and held up and out of the way by any number of pins and ornaments.
Esen favors light clothing (both in color and in weight) and colorful jewelry.
PERSONALITYEsen is bullheaded. She's more than set in her ways and is obnoxiously opposed to accepting or even listening to opinions that differ from her own. In particular, she doesn't really "get" the culture of the Earth Kingdom capitol, and feels very much out of place. Despite the comforts that having money offers, Esen would, honestly, be more at home in the desert.
To add to the problem, Esen is naturally rather flaky. What Esen calls "telling the truth" seems, to others, to be speaking without thinking first. She is quite frank, and tends not to hold back when giving her opinion on a matter, and ends up coming off as very rude, if her opinions do not match yours. Despite her obvious lack of thought, Esen is a very talented speaker.
Not only that, but she's also very business-minded. It's not that she intends to be rude. In general, she’s a very outgoing person. She’s certainly playful, and enjoys playing pranks on her pals. However, she doesn't rank very high on the "niceness" scale.
BACKGROUNDEsen’s mother and father were joined in a marriage of love - something rather unusual for the commerce-driven Sandbending tribes of the Si Wong Desert. As a result, the couple suffered considerably, even by the standards of their people, and ended up only scraping by.
To make matters worse, Esen’s mother and father were blackballed by their people from the start. Obsessed with moving up in the world and getting out of the desert, Esen’s father followed up on even the most unlikely rumors of great riches to be found.
Thus, the majority of Esen’s childhood was spent trying to convince the rest of her tribe’s children that she simply was not as strange as her mother and father were. When she wasn’t doing that, she was getting involved with the tribe. Esen showed a real spark for leadership, garnering a large group of friends and heading them up and took a great interest in all aspects of tribal life, especially bending. Her parents, ever doting, took notice of this and encouraged her to pursue her talent further.
Esen’s life changed abruptly midway through her sixteenth year. Esen’s father’s dedication finally paid off, and he came home one day with a large grin on his face and an even bigger sack of gold. “There’s more where this came from.” He told his wife and daughter, and suddenly, family friends and long lost relatives began popping up all over the place. This sort of thing grew quickly aggravating, but didn’t pose a problem for very long – shortly after her seventeenth birthday, Esen’s mother and father had their things packed, and ready to move to Ba Sing Se. Esen was the opposite of thrilled at the news, but, after a great deal of arguing, was convinced that the move was for the best. Before leaving, she gathered a large amount of sand up into a jar, which she keeps in her room in Ba Sing Se.
Esen has not adapted well to life in the big city. She has had a difficult time making friends (mostly due to her own stubbornness) and is decidedly unhappy, despite her parent’s lavishing their money upon her. The problems are not just of a social nature, either, Esen's bending ability on solid earth is laughable - mostly because of her own lack of training on it - and so, her parents thought it best to set her up with a teacher, so that she might better learn how to work with solid earth.
