I'm confused. I have faith in God, i believe that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, but i'm confused. I read Acts 2:38. Does that mean you need to be baptised to be saved? neutral

Reasons that show it's not necessary:
The thief on the cross wasn't baptised, I don't think any of the disciples were, and Mary wasn't baptised.
Baptism is a public sign to others of the decision you've made (which is why baptising babies is foolish). It doesn't mean you're supposed to be perfect. That's impossible. It just means that you want others to know that you seriously want to follow Christ. It can be a great testimony to someone new in the church!

No, you don't need to. However, it's a good thing. It's simply a public statement of faith.

Read the first part of Acts 15, Some people were telling to the Gentiles that unless you've been baptized, you will not be saved, but then you'll see Peter, Paul, and Silas Speaking about their travels and how they went among the Gentiles and the holy spirit decended on the Gentiles when Peter was at the house of Cornelius. Then a man among them stands up and declares that they should send a letter to the Gentiles telling them not to worry and giving them a couple of ideas how to stay clean.

(Whew, pulled that out of my head. Been studying Acts for a while now.)

So basically, you don't need to be baptized to be saved, it is a form of symbolism that you are commiting your life to Christ, but you don't need to be baptized in order to do so. 3nodding

Exactly!!

Baptism, while commanded by Jesus in the great commission, is not a REQUIREMENT for salvation, merely a public declaration of your recognition of Christ.

In Romans, it tells us what the symbolism of baptism is: That as Christ died and was buried (you being immersed in the water) and as he rose again to glory (you coming up out of the water) so are we new creations in Christ. As Jesus was glorified after the ressurection, so we should present an outward sign of the inward change that He has wrought in us.

I actually found that very interesting.
Acts 2:38
Peter replied, "Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will recieve the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Umm, from reading it right now, I think the answer is yes. It says "for the forgiveness of your sins" ... "and you will recieve the Holy Spirit.

I was baptised at the age of 7, so I really havn't thought about it. That was a good question!

But is he talking about physical or spiritual baptism? We pentecostals beleive in the baptism of the Holy Spirit, which would make more sense (in my view) in the context of this verse.

Somehow I don't think that God would condemn someone who has accepted his Son and lived their life for Him, but was not baptized in water. God's not like that.

Works of the flesh (baptism also) brings forth forgiveness of sins? Never!

Ephesians 2:8-9 (ESV)
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Romans 4:2-5 (ESV)
For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness...

No, in the bible it saids that if you believe that Jesus Christ has died for you u go to heaven. Baptism is something u do to represent that you have been saved. It is not necceasrry but its good to do.
