(I was about to post this in the Books in the Workplace thread, but I thought I'd take a slightly different approach. wink )

I've recently started a job as the personal assistant of an English professor, and every time I'm around her I think "I have to post about this in the guild!" For, you see, she is a bibliophile in the truest sense.
Whenever she says something about her love of books, or how much time she spends reading, I feel like I know of some secret bond that connects us. Being much too intimidated by her book-knowledge (and never having an opportunity just to chat), I never say anything to her about my own abiding love for books. Even so, I know I've met a rare person with an everlasting love for books.

So, have you ever met a kindred spirit in bibliophilia? Do you sense the connection? Is there something exciting about meeting bibliophiles in real life?

I'm the type who always carries a book. In fact, when purse shopping I always make sure it's large enough to hold a hardback redface So I do tend to gravitate towards people that I see reading. I'll look around the breakroom here at work and see people sitting by themselves busily reading and I always want to ask them about the book they have. I've also turned into a weird recruiter for the site where I review books. If I see someone reading I'll try to sidle up next to them and get a conversation going to see if they'd be interested in becoming a reviewer. I told my editor that I feel like a recruiter for a funky cult. rofl

I have not yet but I would like to met Yomiko Readmen. whee (And yes I know that she is an anime character but she is my idol.) I often times carry a book in my purse too.

Through one of my friends, I met someone new and made a new friend who loves books as much as I do. Strangely enough, we struck it off immediately, before I even knew that she read all the time (it usually takes me awhile to feel comfortable around a new person). Now, we always look at whatever book the other's reading, and tend to have short discussions about the books...whenever we're not reading them. 3nodding

I'm also a part of this 'battle' that my library does, where we read a bunch of books and then have to compete to answer the most questions correctly later on. It's a ton of fun, and I'm only sad that I aged out of the younger competition, where we actually went and versed other libraries professionally...But, thanks to me and at least one other person, we convinced our librarian to hold a competition for the older kids (I'll age out of that next year, too...)! It was a ton of fun, and I made another new friend there.

You're all very lucky to have met such bibliophilic people in your life. 3nodding

I agree, it seems not enough people are able to appreciate books these days.

One of my co-workers is a bibliophile. I'm taking over the literature class and we are discussing what classics to incorporate into the cirriculum.

I think it's great to be able to meet bibliophiles in real life.

I've met a few, and we have bound together quite nicely (though we have issues when we don't want to return the books to eachother). As to the books in the purse, I typically carry paperbacks, because that way I can carry more (my record is six).

I love to ramble on about books, so when I meet someone who's a bibliophile like me I do a little inner-happy dance. It's odd, usually I'm very quiet-except around close friends who I'm comfortable with-but if you're a fellow book-lover (or even *gasp* hate them, but allow me to ramble) then I'll go on for ages. I also choose purses by whether I can fit books inside them. I was kind of surprised that people in this guild do this as well, but when I stop and think about it it makes sense.

I've never used a purse. I just use my messenger bag, which is big enough to hold many books, as well as everything else I'd need. 3nodding

Oh, I have one of those too, it's filled with some RP books (great reads for RPing and writing) and a few hardbacks as well as additional paperbacks, but I can only carry it to school. I have to rely on the purse books at work, since the purse will fit in the tiny locker.

Whenever I meet a fellow bibliophile I automatically start to talk about what I'm reading and then we'll start talking about every book we've ever read and want to read. I have a few friends who are just as obsessed as I am, and we all have bags or purses that are filled with books. Though my best friend who I've known for ever doesn't like to read that much, so she gets annoyed that I ramble about good ones I'm reading.

xDDD Whenever I meet a true bibliophile, not just someone who is unhealthily obsessed with Harry Potter or Twilight or Eragon, I go nuts. I won't shut up, since I hardly ever meet people who are as obsessed as I am. xd

My freshman english teacher was one, although he was more on about poetry than anything else so we had our battles of the stories all the time. Now that I'm not a freshman anymore I don't see him that often, sadly.

Luckly, though, I seem to be a bibliofile magnet because as soon as I turned sophmore I met another one who is just as stuck up on fiction reading as I am. We swap books all the time, and since we see eachother all the time theres no worries about lost books! blaugh

As for keeping books in purses, I don't own a purse so I just keep one handy like in the car or my book bag. My friend however has managed to stuff at least half a dosen books in his jacket pockets at one time! eek I don't know how he does it!
