its really annoying me all these little jrockers suddenly thinking they're japanese. being japanese actaully requires having some japanese blood, or least having been born in japan! you're not japanese because you listen to dir en grey and go around calling everbody "kawaii" or "-chan". you're not japanese because some how you got it stuck into your head that you're a "ninja" and wear those stupid naruto headbands.
its really ******** annoying me! and whats more its dicouraging a friend of mine who has ambitions to live in japan, and actually knows something about the japanese people, because she thinks she's going to be mistaken for one of those posers.

We all agree with what you say, although there is a thread about this "RANT ABOUT STUPIDNESS OF JAPANOPHILES"

I've never had that problem. And anyone who would think I that I think like that, I'll tell them: sure I listen to Japanese music, watch anime, read manga, and stuff, but I know I'm Scotch-Irish and happen to like it. rolleyes

And Mikagi's right, there was another thread, but I haven't really paid attention to that one either.

Sure, i swear up and down that i was Japanese in a past life, but couldn't be less true in this one. Granted, i listen to Japanese music, read manga, watch anime and the like, and i KNOW that I'm German American (by heritage, or course) and damn proud of it!

All I can say is that posers are dime a dozen. It's not easy to find genuine people that just enjoy being themselves.
I wouldn't consider it rude or disrespectful for a person that was not Japanese to consider themselves "J-rockers". J-Rock is a musical genre, it has no true biological inheritence other than the fact that bands who belong in that genre come from Japan. I know there are Japanese rock bands that doesn't entirely consist of Japanese people, would they be any less J-Rock than a purely Japanese band?
I do see your point though, it is annoying that other countries have a narrow perspective of Japanese culture... Sanrio, Naruto FMA Inuyasha ect., a handful of VERY popular Japanese musicians here and there, ect.
I wish for once that I can walk into an anime store that isn't covered wall to wall in Hello Kitty, Inuyasha and others, and mech models. *argh*

Oh but a reply!

I know I'm Italian-Irish (born in Canada) and I'm proud of that. Sure I'm learning Japanese, why not it's absolutely FUN! biggrin Sure I listen to J-pop, why? 'Cos it's got really cool beats and sounds/looks better than other music that are in different languages. Just like someone who only likes rap. And I do watch anime/read manga (although after RANT ABOUT STUPIDNESS OF JAPANOPHILES I haven't bought or done much anime related lately. I'm rereading my many books first, and rewatching all my DVDs before I buy more except for 2 dvd thing's I got for Christmas.

Only thing is I wish I was either Japanese or born/lived in Japan because then the language would been easier for me ( razz Having to be fluent in it) and I think the strict rules of Japanese schools sounds fun! biggrin In fact, I like to think that by now, if I lived in Japan, I'd be getting ready for entrance exams. smile

Other than that I am not like that!

Hmm yeah, I know what you mean. I kinda use to be like that... like when I was 12, but I grew up and started having a life. I still want go to Japan and live there for a while, but I'm not like totally obsessed with Japan and feel I have to show everyone that I know everything there is to know about Japan. Sheesh I barely know anything about Australia and I've lived here all my life.

Yeah, Japanophiles scare me. I'm 1/4 Japanese but like, 99% of people say I look Mexican because I don't have the "eyes"...and I don't run around calling people -chan and stuff either. I don't like every manga on earth, and yet somehow I'm classified as an anime geek. I find it ironic.

Well, is 1/4 enough to count?

If those girls had been biological children of my grandmother I would be part Thai.
But I'm all European in my heritage. Which is cool.

My guess is that these individuals are at an impressionable stage in their lives. I can see that they want to fit in a with a group, whether they are of that ethnic/racial background is not so much the issue. I'm sure they realize that they truly aren't Asian in decent, but they want to make themselves feel like that part of the culture. In a sense, it's sort of like a waking dream where their reality is a bit warped, but not to the full extent. Heck, I have dreams where I'm in Japan, speaking Japanese, *as* a Japanese person (I look Japanese). These can get rather amusing because the Japanese has to be limited because of my knowledge base. As individuals we have a right to choose our paths, some might be a bit more odd than others, but hey, if you choose that path, it's your own. If you don't like a certain individual because of how he/she acts, then just don't hang out with him/her. It's a pretty simple solution, don't you think?

What about the opposite case? I know I'm as Caucasian as they come, but my friends all insist (despite my avid refusal) that I am actually Japanese. This perhaps has something to do with my fascination with a wide variety of aspects of Japan besides the language, but still.

Back to the actual topic, the thing about posers is they usually grow out of it once they realize that they are not what they claim or wish they were. Often times this can be caused by a culture shock or just growing up and maturing. I typically just ignore these types or don't take them seriously. I find it best not to take a proactive position on it as often times these types are immature or unwilling to listen to someone who might actually know better.

I may not be Japanese by blood or appearance but ever since I was little even before I knew what was anime or manga but I took martial arts I felt a connection with the culture and thats what influences me in wanting to move to japan no matter what hardships I have to deal with . That is how I would describe my reasoning about myself.

But back to topic people who consider themselves japanese because of anime or music alone do annoy me. but people who just go around calling every one kun or chan and have no background in learning Japanese truely. Those kind of people are a cause of the stereotypes people from other countries [whether they are eastern andor western] have most of the time.
