This isn't a debate topic... just something that kind of blew my mind.

So I had a baby shower on Sunday, and of course there were tons of relatives there, chatting about this and that. One of them, my aunt Joan, was talking to my boyfriend's mother about her children (she has 7 stressed ) and how her last one was a bit of a "surprise."

I think she was 49 when she found out she was pregnant again, and her oldest child at the time was 24... anyways, the doctors she saw suggested that she have an abortion because of her age, there could be a lot more medical complications. She declined, and whatever, her choice right?

But what I didn't understand was this... the doctors suggested that she do much more testing than in a typical pregnancy because of the increased risk, so that if the child needed extra care, they would know ahead of time and be able to prepare for it.

She declined. She also refused to have any ultrasounds, even a standard first trimester one.

This really didn't make too much sense to me, but I really really didn't want to ask about it. I've known for a long time that she's pro-life... but shouldn't the quality of life matter? I mean, she didn't even want to know if the fetus (AND her) would survive the pregnancy.

...just another example of people I'll never understand, I guess.

That kind of seems "anti-life" really, she obvious, or more so it at least appears, that she cares little for the life of her child as well as what effect it could have on her. Not to sound selfish, but I'm sure her child would prefer to not be the living cause of her mother's death...though maybe her blant refusal is just that she doesn't care if it's not "normal" it's her child and she's going to have it regardless. Seems just stupid to not at least be prepared, especially if the child has special needs whatever those needs are.

The kid was fine and perfectly health, btw, and I'm thankful for it.

It just seems really foolish to not know if your kid will even live to term... and then even MORE foolish to not be even slightly prepared to HELP it if something is wrong.

Doesn't seem very pro-life. stare

It seemed more like she wanted the "all natural pregnancy" experience, rather than having any actual opinions about abortion.

There's no reason to avoid proper medical care when pregnant and when you intend to give birth.

It does seem terribly foolish, but one needs to only google for "homeopathic medicine" to see how many people believe that modern doctors are worthless and that "all natural" is somehow best.

Sounds to me like she was probably scared. If she had testsand found something wrong, she'd know. However not having tests and going on like everything is fine probably madeher feel better. I guess it's like those who are scared to get tested for a disease. They'd rather put it off than go get tested and risk being told they have something.

I'm not saying this is a good thing, it's just that it seems normal for someone with an increased risk to do.

Or they're paranoid, or they like feeling like they have the ULTIMATE CONTROL.

Except Moniquill rules them, biatches.

I'm gonna agree with Mipsy and go with she was afriad.

But it does sound very odd to not even have a ultra sound...

Lots of younger people don't have ultrasounds after a certain point or don't have them at all. Some because they want the gender to be a "surprise", some for more personal reasons. Refusing an ultrasound isn't uncommon, but in that case it was kind of silly. If being pregnant could kill you, your baby, or both of you, wouldn't you want to make sure nothing went wrong and you didn't leave your six other kids with no mommy?

I suppose... I'd personally be much more afraid if every doctor I saw told me that I had an incresed risk of pretty much every possible complication. It just blows my mind that she was also refusing to be aware of medical problems even though knowing about them would have probably made them much easier to deal with.
