His parents, delighted by his capability to take things seriously, felt they were doing the right things in raising him. However, as the boy spent most of his time watching his sisters, he hardly had any time to be social with peers which was very important in business matters. Personality: Roka is pretty much a passive, distant boy who prefers listening to his music than to the chatter of his fellow classmates. Though quite intelligent, he doesn't have too much of a personal ambition to take over his father's company; but as the only son of the Toshiro family, he is constantly weighed down by the pressure of his relations.
To escape this, he does what any ordinary teenager would do and takes out his headphones to start listening to his music - never mind if it's considered an ordinary commoner's habit. Sometimes he wishes he were a commoner, though so much as hinting such a dreadful thought upsets his over-bearing mother. Her main argument against him is that he was born the only son of a rich family and that if he isn't grateful enough to accept the responsibility as heir to his father's position, then he doesn't deserve to be part of their family. Of course she could never understand how much her son would have liked not to be.
Though he pretends to be indifferent to others, Roka is actually pretty observant when he wants to be. Commoners, rare though they are in his society and everyday life, fascinate him immensely. If such an occasion were to occur, he decided that he would drop everything, even his headphones, to listen to what the commoner had to say about their normal life. After all, isn't it important to understand what commoners think if the upper class businesses depend on their customers' likes and dislikes? If he hadn't had so much pressure weighing down on his shoulders, Roka would be the type of boy who would probably enjoy running his father's business and perhaps even be successful with it. The more his parents try to push him to show what he can do, however, the more he seems to want to rebel. His grades are just barely A's and B's, but they know he can do better.

History: As the second oldest and only son of a family of six, Roka finds it hard living life as the middle child. Even though he has one older sister who helps him care for his two younger ones, most responsibilities fall on him, and because of this he has developed the coldest and most mature attitude of the four children over the years.
His parents, delighted by his capability to take things seriously, felt they were doing the right things in raising him. While their son was a handsome enough boy, he was not skilled in making friends or good communication. In order to be successful, he had to be well-liked, and to guide him along this path, they sent him to Ouran High School, where they were certain he would be able to get close with the right people and possibly learn how to be more gregarious.
Prompt Number Chosen: Class 1A Prompt 1 Prompt Reply:
It was already half-way through the first period class and Roka hadn’t even looked up from his position outside the class door. The truth was that the teacher hadn’t even realized he was there. She had marked him absent that morning, just as he had hoped she would, even though he had been at school hours earlier. He couldn’t have his parents thinking he was their ‘perfect little boy’. He, like any other human being, could make mistakes.
Only the majority of mistakes Roka made were done on purpose to discourage the thought he might be a successful business owner one day. The more his mother and father fed on the idea, the harder they would push their only son. What Roka feared was that in their pushing, they would rid him of all the genuine passion he had of his family’s line of business. They had already succeeded in suppressing it through their demanding, strict manipulation of his life such as enrolling him in Ouran High School.
It wasn’t the course of action itself that infuriated Roka – it was the reason behind it. His parents’ idea of a logical explanation for signing him up was that he wasn’t social enough, and without social skills, he wouldn’t be able to get far in life no matter how successful a business owner he was. After all, most people in the upper classes got there through connections and knowing the right people. The only people Roka kept close to were his sisters.
In order to change this, their parents separated the close siblings. They told him it wasn’t good to be around so many girls and he’d never get the influence he needed to be manly and firm. In saying this, they sent their three daughters to an all-girls school – Lobedia.
Of course Roka didn’t respond too well to this news. He found it difficult to open up to his classmates; most of whom he knew just wanted to get to know him in hopes of making family connections. In an act of defiance, he resolved to remain as secluded as he could throughout the school year. That way, he thought, no one can get the better of me.
Just then, the classroom door Toshiro Roka had been leaning on slid open, causing him to fall sideways from his seat onto the floor, where he had been listening to his music. Due to his headphones, he had not heard a student’s voice request to go to the bathroom and therefore had not the wit to move aside in time. The student, unaware of the toppled Roka, proceeded in walking, but tripped over his body and fell on top of him instead.
“Oof! Unh…”
“Oww!” He yelped, more in surprise than anything. Fortunately, whoever had fallen on him wasn’t too heavy. Grasping his headphones, he ripped them off his head and attempted to crane his neck over his shoulder to see who it was. Her voice didn’t seem familiar. Possibly a new student? It was difficult to get a glimpse with her on top of him, and eventually he gave up trying.
Rubbing her head, the girl groaned. It took her a moment to realize what exactly she had tripped on. “Oh! I-I’m sorry! I didn’t see you there!” She sounded rather embarrassed. An eruption of laughter issued forth from the room, confirming that the open door allowed the class a perfect view of what had happened.
“Don’t worry about it,” Roka murmured, realizing how awkward they must have looked with her on top of him. She made no motion to get up, however, and he began to wonder if she was paralyzed by her humiliation. No girl he knew who was attending Ouran this year reacted to embarrassment like that. They were all too proud. Sure, there were the overly-dramatic ones – laughing, crying, running off in tears…but never quiet. “Hey, um…would you…mind getting off of me?” he invoked gently, hoping to get her to come to her senses without upsetting her. Perhaps it was just taking a while for her to think of some dramatic reaction; anything he said might set her off.
However, all she did was apologize quietly, “Oops, sorry…I guess I’m a little absent-minded this morning…I’m kind of a klutz.” Her voice was almost inaudible beneath the storm of whistles and jeers, but this time Roka was certain he had never heard it before. Immediately, the girl stood, brushed herself off, and walked briskly down the hallway – in the opposite direction of the bathrooms.
“The bathroom’s the other way…” He said, but she was already too far away to hear, and he didn’t feel like shouting. Either she was too distracted to know she was going the wrong way, or she was a new student. Pushing himself up off the floor, Roka adjusted his headphones around his neck and turned just in time to see the girl’s back. His jaw dropped open. The ‘girl’ from behind appeared to be wearing a rather shabby-looking outfit – and what’s more, it was a guy’s. Had he been wrong in assuming the new student was female? And what was with those clothes?!
“Toshiro-san? Toshiro-san!”
Startled, Roka looked up. “Hmm?”
The teacher regarded him sternly. “It’s wonderful that you could join us, Toshiro-san. You have a lot of catching up to do. Tardiness is not tolerated at this school, but since it’s the first day, I’ll over look the situation. Please take your seat, and we will resume the lesson.”
Nodding solemnly, the boy picked up his books and took up an empty seat beside a student who waved to him with annoying enthusiasm. Roka recognized his classmate, as they had been in the same classes since they had been children, but he had never bothered to learn the young man’s name. That didn’t seem to matter to the young man, however, who called Roka by name as if they were the best of friends.
“Hey, hey Roka-kun!” the boy whispered excitedly as Toshiro took his seat and winced at the informal reference to his first name. Only his sisters called him Roka-kun. “That was great! I mean, I didn’t think you had it in you, but that was hilarious! Tripping the new girl like that! I mean me and some of the other guys were thinking of getting together and coming up with some kind of prank, but that really took the cake!”
“I didn’t do it on purpose,” Roka insisted, busy rummaging through his bag for a pencil and his notebook, pretending not to care too much. “Who is that? Are you sure it’s a girl?”
“Yeah, she’s a commoner. No idea how she got into our class. Guess she couldn’t afford the school uniform,” the boy snickered mockingly. “So your sisters aren’t going to attend Ouran? That’s too bad. They’re pretty cute.”
Roka raised a brow and shot a questioning glance at the boy from out of the corner of his eye.
Immediately, the boy dropped the subject, realizing he had said something he shouldn’t have. “Uh…so, you seem to like the new girl. What, are you interested in her or something?”
“What?” It wasn’t that obvious, was it? He had been careful to avoid any suspicious questions, like where she had come from or what her name was. Perhaps the boy was jut fishing for something to talk about. “Don’t be stupid. I thought she was a guy.”
“Oh, really?” The boy grinned, somehow realizing he had struck home. “Then what was with that goofy look you had when you watched her walk away?”
The conversation was getting obnoxious. It reminded Roka why he didn’t like talking. “I was wondering why she was going the wrong way.” He spoke the comment with a finality that made it very clear he didn’t want to be bothered any longer. Replacing his headphones over his ears, he opened up his text book and began to copy the notes of the chapter that were highlighted on the board.
~*~*~*~
The rest of the week remained, for the most part, uneventful. Day after day, Roka would come late to class, in spite of his early arrival at the school itself. Despite his teacher’s previous threats, he knew she never had any real intentions of carrying out any punishments more severe than a strict talking-to and a lowering of grades. The teachers at Ouran never really disciplined their students in fear that their rich, powerful parents would object. This was why the students had more freedom and free time than ordinary high schools, allowing more time to socialize and mingle.
Though he noticed the commoner girl around the school every now and then, he didn’t dare go up to her. He suspected she must have hated him for humiliating her that first day, since everyone else was so sure he had tripped her on purpose. On top of that, though Roka made a show of not caring about what anyone else thought, he’d never live it down if he was caught associating himself with the new student. Especially since he had a reputation of being cold and detached from everyone else. What would they think if he had avoided everyone for most of his life, only to befriend a commoner now? Roka was careful to keep his distance from the girl - even to avoid eye contact. Once he thought she might have tried to speak with him in the hallway, but he purposely pretended he didn’t notice; he had simply turned his music up louder.
Then, on Friday morning, it happened.
As he arrived at school, early as usual, Roka realized he left his headphones at home. He couldn’t imagine how he could possibly get through the day without them; they were his most efficient method of ignoring everyone. When he called the manor, his mother announced that a day without his precious music wouldn’t kill him, and that it might do him some good. When she began to ramble on about how he needed to start talking to people, Roka came to the conclusion that his mother wasn’t going to send him his headphones and hung up.
He sighed and sunk to the floor, imagining himself with his hands clasped tight over his ears, trapped amidst a crowd of chit-chattering students. The image of boy in his first period class babbling on and on to him was particularly distressing. What was he going to do?! Just as he was considering skipping school altogether, a sudden thought struck him. He wasn’t the only student who listened to music in class. One of the other desks was bound to have headphones in them! He could use a set and return it after school before anyone even realized it was gone.
Sliding open the classroom door a crack, he scanned the area quickly. No students or teachers in sight. Unsure why he was taking so much precaution, Roka urged himself on and strode toward the nearest desk. It wasn’t as if he was stealing or anything…he just needed it for a day. Finally, he convinced himself his uneasy paranoia was due to the fear someone would discover that he was actually early to class and his reputation would be ruined. A small price to pay for headphones.
Nearly half the desks in the room had been searched when a voice resounding from behind the teacher’s desk spoke up. “Err…excuse me…”
Roka almost fell over in shock. The desk top he had just lifted slammed down, and in an effort to stifle the sound, instinctively stuck his hand in between. When it jammed, he had to bite his lip in order to keep from cursing from the pain, which he knew would have been more conspicuous than any sound the desk could have made. Swerving to locate the voice, he removed his hand from under the desk top and rubbed it tenderly.
“Oops! Are you alright?” The commoner girl’s head poked out from behind the teacher’s desk. She had been sitting there on the floor the whole time, sorting out papers to pass out for the day. However, hidden behind the desk, Roka realized he must have missed her. His complexion, crimson from his anger at jamming his own hand, paled.
“I uh…I was just looking for something…” he managed to utter, his gaze dropping at his feet while his scratched the back of his head nervously. It was so strange without the familiar weight of his headphones.
“It’s you!” She exclaimed, suddenly recognizing the boy’s face. “You’re the guy who tripped me that first day!”
“It was an accident!” Roka argued, flinging his hands up in exasperation. Normally he wouldn’t have been so dramatic, but the shame at being caught looking into people’s desks, and by a commoner, was overwhelming him. “I never meant to trip you! Why can’t anyone understand?!”
To his surprise, the girl laughed. “I was only joking, silly. I know it wasn’t your fault. After all, I was the one who almost stepped on you, remember?” She got up off the floor and sat up on the teacher’s chair.
“I didn’t – wait, what?“ Prepared to defend himself, Roka was taken completely by surprise when she accepted the blame as her own. Also, she had addressed him in a way no one else had ever dared, not even his family – had she really just called him ‘silly’? Did she even know who he was? And yet, it didn’t seem to matter in the situation. “Uh…yeah…I knew that…” Watching her take a seat, he felt strangely uneasy standing, so he too decided to take a seat at the nearest desk, which happened to be the very one he had jammed his hand in.
“I wanted to tell you I was sorry, but you were always listening to your headset. And I couldn’t catch you before school, because you always come late to class. Speaking of which – why are you so early today? It’s nearly an hour before school starts.” She smiled at him. Not one of those sickly-sweet smiles, or those flirtatious ones, but just a plain, friendly smile. Roka almost forgot she had been talking to him. When he didn’t reply, she commented, “Whatever you’re looking for must be pretty important, huh?”
“Important? Oh...yeah, sure…I guess…” Shrugging, Roka racked his brains for something to say that didn’t sound like he was a half-wit. Wasn’t he a class A student after all? He could talk if he wanted to. He just never had a reason to before. “It’s just my headphones,” he admitted. “I think I lost them somewhere.”
“And you think one of our classmates took them?” she inquired. It was genuine curiosity in her voice, not sarcasm, which puzzled the boy. Both she and he knew how rich the students were. Why would any of them have a reason to take his headphones if they could easily afford their own? Maybe it was different in commoner schools.
“Uh…I guess.” With how his voice trembled slightly, Roka couldn’t even convince himself he was telling the truth.
Commoner or not, it was no wonder the girl saw through it,. “No way! You were going through all those desks to steal a set of headphones? Why? Did yours break or something? Aren’t you rich enough to afford a new pair?” Her utter amazement that Roka would even attempt such a thing only worsened his guilt. However, he suspected it was mixed with some amusement as well.
“Look, I’m not some thief, okay? My name is Roka. Toshiro Roka. The reason I’m here early is because I’m here this early everyday. I just don’t like being on time to class. And the reason I’m here this morning is because I had forgotten my headphones at home and my mother refused to send them to me. So here I am, reduced to this; searching through desks in hopes of finding a set of headphones. But I swear I had every intention of returning them after school.”
With the commoner girl at the head of the classroom in the teacher’s raised chair, and with him sitting across from her in a desk at the center of the room, Roka felt the pressure of one pressed to tell the truth in a court of law. Having spilled the beans, he felt both relieved and strangely pleased with himself. At last, he had found the right words to communicate.
“Oh. Is that all? Why didn’t you say so?” the girl asked, smiling at him, her eyes shining with unvoiced laughter. “Still, taking someone’s property without their permission is pretty low. Especially for someone of your ranking, Toshiro-san.”
So. She had known who he was all along. Well…that was rather embarrassing. In an instant, the elated feeling Roka had discovered had inverted into a deep depression. Never had he experienced so many emotions at once. The stress was making him careless. Once again he felt his face get a little hot while his cheeks reddened. Feeling extremely uneasy, he tugged at his collar and avoided the girl’s gaze.
She giggled at him. “No need to be worried, Toshiro-san! I may be a commoner, but I know how to keep secrets. Don’t worry, I won’t tell.” If it were anyone but her, Roka was certain the secret would only have been kept while the person trusted with it feared his parents’ wrath if they told. And yet, for some reason, he was quite sure the girl had no fear in her mind at all at the moment. She just seemed to want to be friends. But how could they be? That was the last thing Roka needed right now – or so he tried to tell himself. “My name’s Kana. It’s a pleasure to meet you face to face finally, but I wish it was under better circumstances. You must think my clothes are a mess. I personally consider them atrocious, but since all my old school uniforms were too small for me, I had to wear my older brother’s hand-me-downs.”
Roka said nothing. He was afraid to open his mouth lest he say something stupid and offend the girl. But he couldn’t just stand there and pretend to ignore her this time. Not without his headphones. “I-it’s very good to meet you, Kana,” he stuttered quietly, his tongue stumbling over the words. He was too busy trying to get funny images out of his head that for some reason kept showing up, such as the image of Kana in an Ouran girl’s uniform. How could he have ever thought her to be a boy?
“Hey, what’s the matter? You’re still so gloomy. Is it your headphones?” She blinked at him, concerned. “What’s the big deal with those? I’d have gotten sick of my music by now if I had listened to them as much as you did.” Kana laughed a little, but then realized it might have been insulting if it really meant so much to Roka. “Why do you want them so badly?”
Taking his time in answering, he took a gulp and a deep breath before speaking. “It’s not like that. If you have to know…well…it’s because I can’t stand the world. Sometimes I guess I just use my headphones as an escape. That way I don’t have to listen to anyone and everything can be like I want it to be in my head. I don’t have to worry about what others think of me, or if I’m good enough, or anything else.” He hesitated, avoiding her gaze. “It may sound kind of stupid…I don’t know what it’s like for commoners, but…sometimes I just can’t stand being myself.”
When Roka finally summoned the courage to look up at Kana for her reaction, she gave him such a sympathetic look that he instantly knew she understood exactly what he felt. It never occurred to him a commoner might share his same feelings. But then, weren’t commoners human beings too?
“It’s not stupid,” she told him seriously. “It’s true. You didn’t think you’re the only one who can’t stand being who they are, did you?” Kana tilted her head and smiled sadly. “I mean, compared to being a commoner, your life can’t be that terrible, can it?”
For the first time that school year, Roka grinned. “I wouldn’t say that, actually…care to trade places?”
Both students burst into fits of laughter. Roka offered to help Kana sort the teacher’s papers and they continued to talk and chat with each other about how school life was like compared to life at home. Before they knew it, it was almost time for school to begin.
“I think that’s the last of them,” Kana declared as she stood. “Thanks for all your help, Toshiro-san.”
“Roka-kun.”
“What?”
“Call me Roka-kun if you want. Toshiro-san is what people call my dad.”
Kana giggled. “Okay then, Roka-kun…you know that desk you were sitting at earlier? Yes, the one in the middle. That’s mine. Go ahead and open it. If you need to ‘escape’ so badly, go ahead and take mine.”
“Headphones? You had some all along?”
“Surprised?”
“Well…it’s just that I never see you wearing them.”
“I don’t. I just keep them there to remind me that I can use them if I want. But every time I don’t, I know I’ve become a little stronger at not caring what others think of me. Crazy, huh?”
“Even crazier than my theory,” Roka agreed, smiling. “It’s a shame to have them if you don’t use them. But it’s a good concept.” Carefully replacing the headphones back where he found it, he made sure close the lid more carefully this time.
“What’s the matter? They’re not good enough for you, rich boy?” Kana teased.
“No. I just decided I’m not going to use them today. I figured it’s worth a shot. I mean, at least I’m not some petty commoner, right?”
“Shut-up!”
He quickly slipped behind the sliding classroom door in order to narrowly evade the book Kana threw at him. In a moment, however, he had slid it open once again. “Kana?”
“What? Come to make some more fun of me?”
“No…just that I’m sorry for knocking you over that morning. I may not have done it on purpose, but I was in your way.” He winked. “Would have apologized sooner, but I just couldn’t be seen around with commoner, you know?”
Kana suddenly looked hurt.
“Not one that looked like a boy anyway…what would people think?! I’m straight, thank you very much!” He slammed the door shut again as a storm of books and various other items rained down. “Come to school tomorrow and we’ll get you a proper Ouran girl’s uniform.”
"Really?!" Her face lit up in a way that made Roka happy he had left his headphones at home.
He slid the door cloesed a final time. "Sure." Chuckling to himself, Toshiro Roka waited outside the classroom, waiting for the school bell to ring and preparing to be late as he always did. Only this time, he’d be able to hear and be ready to move if someone asked to go to the bathroom.

.: Coming Soon :.

Recived on Dec 25, 2007 by Mitsuko-chan & Kai, who asked the Ouran mule to pm it as a Secret Santa to Ty - Mitsuko-chan! gonk Ah-CHOO! You know better than to - ah-CHOO! - than to get me presents! How could you let Kai - ah-CHOO! Ah-CHOO! - do such a thing?! -_- Still...I have to admit...ah-choo! It's pretty awesome-looking, whatever it is... thanks. I...I think its colors are growing on me. Ah-CHOO! Then again... *sniffs*
Recived on Dec 11, 2007 by Agent (& Katsuo-kun?), pmed as a Secret Santa to me - Agent, how COULD you?! A candy cane? Are you trying to give me cavities? *sigh* Well, I appreciate the thought, but next time no spending on me! Now I owe you. *shakes head* Ah well...it's pretty enough with those green and red stripes, anyway...I just hope it doesn't turn into another of those furry things that makes me allergic... sweatdrop
Recived on October 20, 2007 by OHS Staff, pg 737 in the main thread - Thank you! Can't wait to see what they become!
