This is a poll asking how you prefer to have sound effects in manga.

I like mine left untouched with small translations next to them or in the back of the book it the if the translations will overlap apart of the manga.

Me, I like them translated like everything else. I've noticed that Viz does a good job of making the English sound effects look like they fit in with the rest of the page.

A little "caption" will work in a snap, but I just find it strange to have all these foreign characters right alongside all my English.

I like sound effects untouched with a tiny caption next to it. I can't stand sound effect glossaries.

I agree, sound effect glossaries SUCK. It's like, you have to go to the index to find whether the hit was like "BAM!" or like "MINT!"

I like them translated myself.

To tell the truth, I never really paid much attention to which version it is, as long as it's not the back glossary. That's just kind of annoying.

I find translating things ruins it alot.

Same here. I don't mind translated sound effects, either.

Then how do you understand the sound cues they are giving?

Whether the door shuts quietly, clicks shut ominously, or slams shut makes a huge amount of difference in the story.

To me, it doesn't really matter. If it's crucial to the art of the page (ie. Blade of the Immortal), I say leave it be and put a little caption next to it. If it's in an inconspicous spot that doesn't ruin the look or feel of the panel, I say translate it. And I'm with everyone else on the soundfx translations at the back of the book. Horribly annoying. I do like the liner/translation notes at the back. It helps with understanding Japanese culture and humor a bit better. 3nodding

Untouched, translations in the back. Or if its not translated, I don't mind.

Personally, I'd be fine with completely untouched. I don't read a lot of translated manga, so I've never even seen the 'glossary in the back' thing, but that actually sounds like it would be fine with me as well. For the poll, I went with "untouched with translations next to them," because that seems like the easiest option that would be good for the most people.

I suspect an entire translation of the sound effect wouldn't bother me either, but as often as the sound effects are integrated into the overall illustration, it seems like it would require more effort than it's worth to remove and replace the sound effects.

Sound effects should be original...just like how the creator wants it to be 3nodding

Admittedly, I don't read as many different many titles as I could, but the only one I've seen with a sound effects glossary in the back is Saiyuki.

I'd like the sound effects translated, but that can sometimes mess up the page. So untouched with a little caption next to them probably works the best.
