I was talking about this at dinner tonight. There are those books that we have to read for school, or start and can't bear to put down an unfinished book. I have to say that The Mayor of Casterbridge has to be one of the worst books I've ever read. I had to read it for my English class in 12th grade. Unfortunetly I had to do journal entries everyday about what I had read. There were many days that there were some really vague entries..lol.. My brother says that he can beat me with Chesapeake, by Michener. I haven't had the horror of reading that one though. xd
So, what books have you read that you wish you hadn't? Why did you read them?

I enjoyed that one, but I read it in English in 11th grade. I think I read it again after high school. I can understand why you wouldn't like it. It was very slow and tedious to read. ninja

I didn't like that one either. I know it was full of symbols and things, but I just didn't like it. I thought of another one. The Lord of The Flies.... couldn't wait to be done with that one. Unfortunetly the year after I read in school, I had to reread it again for another English class. Talk about torture.

Any book that we had to read at school. Cause I'm a picky reader and anything a teacher had us read in school would bore me so I would be found dooling most of the time while everyone else was reading sweatdrop

I know how you feel. I think that there were only a handful books that I enjoyed reading that were school assignments. I have to say though, that of that handful, they are among my favorite books to this day. So I guess its a wide range. Its either love or hate for me..lol. xd

I really shouldn't be saying that I don't like the book, but Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I didn't really read the whole thing, even though I'm supposed to for my English class right now. I think it's very slow and dry, what I did read, anyway. Plus, I don't really see what the book's purpose is.... I mean I know it has a theme and everything ... it just seems so .... jumpy ... I guess. I don't know. Maybe I will like it if I ever get around to reading it... sweatdrop

I'm not a fan of Dickens either. Its not really all that interesting. Everything sortof comes together in the end, but its one of those things, where you just put your head to the side and say "what was the point?"...lol xd

I found it really interesting, I read it back in high school. I have many friends that love that book and we have discussions about it all the time. I had a teacher who explained it sooo well though that I couldn't help but love it. He made it seem so mysterious with all the characters being linked to one another.

So the worst book I ever read...Snow Bound. I don't know if any of you have ever read it but omg...it was sooo boring. And it just dragged on and on. I fell asleep everytime I read it. I could never read it for more than 10 minutes without falling asleep.

I have never read Snow Bound. As for the Classics that most people don't like, I'm a classics collector. I love the Classics, but some of them are definetly something you have to love to read. I can fully understand when people say that they don't like anything thats considered a "classic". I think that you have to want to read any book to truly enjoy it. You can have books that you weren't expecting to like, that you end up liking but usually when you're "forced" to read it, you're not going to love it. when you have to read something for school you have to pick apart the book and you can't enjoy it. i reread almost every book that I had to read in school for my own enjoyment, even if i didn't like it when i read it for school. I knew that if i wasn't forced to choose the theme, find the hidden meanings, and fill a useless journal page, I would most likely enjoy the book. I found this to be pretty much true.
