Production I.G. Enters Negotiations for Live-Action Ghost In The Shell
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Production I.G. meeting with movie studios in Hollywood to develop live-action film.

Animation company Production I.G has received permission from Kodansha to act as an agent to develop a live-action film with a Hollywood studio based on Ghost in the Shell.

Negotiations with American entertainment companies have not been a strong point for Japanese Anime and Film studios in the past. However, hopes are high that a project involving Ghost in the Shell would be more successful due to the significant number of people in the American film business who are fans of the series. The size of the North American fanbase for Ghost in the Shell is also a factor.

As the producers of the original Ghost in the Shell manga by Shirow Masamune, Kodansha still retains rights to the series. Production I.G. produced the feature length anime films Ghost in the Shell and Innocence: Ghost in the Shell, as well as the Stand Alone Complex TV Series. According to the new contract with Kodansha, Production I.G. will represent the creators of the original work and other involved parties in negotiations for distribution of the Live-Action Ghost in the Shell and all other activities involved with production of the film.

Production I.G. is already accustomed to working with major film and TV companies in North America. The studio negotiated directly with major film company DreamWorks for distribution of Innocence and is producing the series IGPX with Cartoon Network. Since the popularity of Ghost in the Shell in North America was a result of the anime produced by Production I.G., many are hopeful that a live-action film supported by the company will experience a similar level of success.

"Now, a brief summary of what the articles say, bolded keywords to catch your attention:
Production IG has permission from Kodansha to act as an agent to develop a Live Action film with a Hollywood Studio based on GITS. The rest are some PR statements.

Heh, yeah, I know what most of you are thinking. The "based on Ghost In The Shell" and "Hollywood" bits are making me uncomfortable too smile Anyway, these are early days, and even if this rumour is proved to be true it would take at least a year or two (or even more) so we have plenty of time to dissect the news, fantasize on our preferences, and generally just go to town with this subject.

My very very early hope if this materializes is that whoever is in charge will at least take some time to do their homework and listen to the fans. And cast a sexy motoko. wink "

Wow. Just wow. This is great news. eek

Who do you think the live characters should be?

Hey I am on board, although there is much room for error I won’t get to bent of shape till its confirmed that it is or isn’t being made, and hell if it does get made you know I am the first in line to see it and if by change it does end up being less than great, I’m still going to buy it when if an when it comes to DVD.

Depending on the studio... I wonder if they'll take the case like Millar's Sin City, adapting as demanded but keeping it as close to the comic as possible.

I wonder what they would do for GitS though. It brings to mind a question of stories... Would it be the original just redone using the modern GitS style for props and terminology, or will it be an all new interpretation of the world.

While the latter is useful for experimenting, it often times abuses the fans knowledge base while paying lip service to the creators.

I am actually intrigued to see how this will turn out...

Well, if your going to discuss props, maybe they should do the same thing they did with 300, and film the whole thing infront of a green screen. Which would actually be pretty cool because CGI graphics have come a long way, and the cities in GITS are so insanely large and detailed that CGI would be alot more visually pleasing than making actual props.

I love the idea. I'm not afraid they'll mess it up, but I'm afraid they wont gain the ability to make it. I heard they had to go through something in order to do it.

I think we have to be positive. After all, Production I.G. is behind this project and they're the ones who were behind the stand alone complex series.
I have hope and even if it turns out horrible, I'll see it anyway. C:

Now this sound isnteresting. Hopefully they won't 'botch it' I'd still love to see it though. I wonder who they'll cast for Motoko and Batou and the rest of Section 9, I would say Angelina Jolie for Motoko and maybe Vin Diesle for Batou (make him grow his hair for once lol) or Rob Van Dam(SP?)! xd
