Are unicorns real or fake?
In my opinion I don't see why they couldn't be real. If merfolk and alians are real why not unicorns. Though I would think they would be easy pray for animals to hunt down since they would be easy to spot.

It is possible that they exist/existed, but as time goes on with no sign of them, it is more and more unlikely that any are alive. Maybe at some point there were unicorns. The Dark Ages probably wiped them out though.

Yeah. If they are or were real they would have stood out. And most beings back in the day were kinda anti different even though they tried to say other wise

Dark Ages are the perfect example of that. Anyone or thing different had a very short or suffering filled life expectancy.

I'm sorry to say that unicorns are the one creatures I've never been able to see as really existing.
I think they would have stood out too much, they would have been too easy to be picked off as prey. Even if they had the speed of a horse stories and legends alway having them living in forests. This would have made it near enough impossible for they to get at top speed while making they way around trees and stuff. Meaning that they wouldn't have had a chance of out running a hunter or other animal.

Theoretically, it's possible, but considering that unicorns were supposedly corporeal creatures with limited magical capability, there would be fossil evidence left behind.

personaly I think unicorns where a cousin to the deer and other hourned animals but that they did indeed die out due to poachers and the dark ages so that is why we dont have any now see think of a caribou they look like huge deer yet oddly it was an animal mentioned in the Bible, Deut. 33:17: now believed by some to be a description of a wild ox or rhinoceros of cours how you would confuse a horse with a rhino or oxen I dont know

American Heritage New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third Edition - Cite This Source unicorn
A mythical animal resembling a small horse but with a long, straight horn growing out of its forehead. Often it was described as having the legs of a deer and the tail of a lion. Some sources claim it was visible only to virgins.
[Chapter:] Mythology and Folklore
well now define small cause now it seems like a freackishly deformed goat

This is a strange subject for me. And very hard to explain.
I had some very traumatic, very abusive things happen to me in my childhood, and there was a unicorn that used to come to me in my dreams and comfort me...
So I believe, at least in the spirit. They are healers and protectors, so it fits with my own experiences 3nodding heart

This would have made it near enough impossible for they to get at top speed while making they way around trees and stuff. Meaning that they wouldn't have had a chance of out running a hunter or other animal. Look at it this way: 1. Unicorns are said to be the guardians of nature and the forests. 2. Forest animals, including predators, would have recognized this creature and known to let it alone, simply because of its magical power, and the fact that they could never catch it 3. If you knew your way around forests instinctually, you'd be surprised at how fast you could move through it (try it some time, it's actually quite fun) 4. The only things that would have ever hunted unicorns, really, were evil creatures (those who seek to destroy life, such as demons) and humans 5. You wouldn't really hunt and kill the being or creature that was protecting you from evil outsiders

IrishHavanaWhitewolf Yeah. If they are or were real they would have stood out. And most beings back in the day were kinda anti different even though they tried to say other wise Unicorns are like faeries. They only appeared to whom they wanted, or were seen by those who had magical eyes to see them with. Yes they stood out, but only if you managed to see one on your own (which was only possible if you had the pure heart of a child or some magical means), or if they wanted to make themselves known to you.

Perhaps they used to be real, but not in the sense we usually think of them. I think James had the right idea; they probably looked something like a goat with only one horn.

Can't say I believe in them but there are people in history who claim they have witnessed such a creature... like Marco Polo though his description suggests he saw a rhino..."scarcely smaller than elephants. They have the hair of a buffalo and feet like an elephant's. They have a single large black horn in the middle of the forehead... They have a head like a wild boar's… They spend their time by preference wallowing in mud and slime. They are very ugly brutes to look at. They are not at all such as we describe them when we relate that they let themselves be captured by virgins, but clean contrary to our notions."
Unicorns probably came about when Europeans first encountered rhinos since it's the only known one horned creature. There are some animals which from the side may look like they only have one horn too, like a goat or an oryx, which may have also helped spread the unicorn fairytales all over.
Well, anyway, "the rhino mistaken for a unicorn" theory is the most widely known reason for unicorns in myths just as manatees were thought to be merfolk.
There was once a German fossil in 1663 found in Einhornhöhle thought to be that of a supposed unicorn but the theory was disproven. The skeleton had only two legs and one horn.
Moreover, P.T. Barnum once put up a unicorn's skeleton for an exhibit but it was revealed to be a hoax anyway.
Unicorns seem fascinating in myths (my favorite mythological creature) but I doubt its actual existence.
