Let me tell you a little story. The scene: yesterday, at Longhorn, my sister's birthday dinner. I'm staying home while my parents go to my grandparent's house becuase I have two reports to write (yeah, I know, why am I here then? Tonight is lazy night, tommorow is work day.)
Dad: why can't you just go with us? Me: becuase I need the computer, and possibly the library, to do these reports. Dad -angry-: I'm calling your school. Me: Um...why? -thinking- becuase I have too much homework...um...what the Hell? Dad: Your teachers shouldn't let you do homework on the computer. Me -jawfloor- Dad, most teacher REQUIRE me to do homework on the computer. Dad: That's the problem! blahblahblahJessicadidn't quite listen to this rant. And why do you need the internet? Me: Research. Dad: What about the Library? Me: A, google is about a thousand times easier than the library, thus saving time, and B, there's about 3 million times more information on the internet then there ever will be at our library ((which, for those reading this, is the worst in probably a 100 mile radius)). Dad: all they teach you in school now is how to google things, you can't even use a library. Me: Dad, they taught me the Dewey decimal system in like 4th grade. I never learned to google things. You don't have to learn it. Thus my point that the internet is easier. Dad: -rantrant- I didn't quite listen to this either.
He infuriates me sometimes.
And today, he went off on me AGAIN about these reports. I'm sorry neither my english nr spanish teacher tell me anything that's going on and so I don't know until the last minute and on top of that I'm holding a job so that you don't have to buy me things anymore and still have my chores to do and other homework besides these two reports.

I know how you feel. PLEASE reiderate that to the retard IB kids at my school who are all, "Oh, we're getting a fancy piece of paper and you're not hahahahahahahahahahaha." What's more important, the documentation or what little useful information you walked away with in the course of earning that documentation? Idiots. stare It's not about the diploma or the school. *kills IB kids because they annoy me (most of them anyway)* They are SO not better than me, like they think. Those kids are going to be ******** later in life because the jobs they're aiming at do not have high demand. Plus they won't use half of the crap they learned. Stupid show-offs. I could be in IB if I wanted to but I'm above those prats and their fancy little diploma. Big freakin' deal. Not to mention EVERYTHING is centered around those selfish bastards. scream -rant-

We don't have IB, but I'm AP... and I agree, it's about enjoying life. The economy's screwed anyway, so why don't we just focus on life rich, wonderful lives rather than making tons and tons of money? And anyway, college is about learning, and bettering yourself because you want to learn. Fortunately, my mom understands all of this, so even though my dad still can't wrap his head around the fact that I don't want to go to Stanford, even though I'd probably get in, my mom just wants me to be happy. That's why Sonoma State is looking mighty good right now... Also, parents need to understand that in order to succeed in school, kids need to be happy in their environments, which means that not every kid is going to succeed in a huge Ivy League where the kids are so stressed that they forget to eat or whatever (true story, according to the friends I have in the Ivies). Also, studies show that companies are hiring less and less from the Ivies, because those students are not always the most capable, especially as many of them are legacy students, and thus have not had to work as hard to get what they want. This is not meant to be a total bash against the Ivies, because they've obviously turned out some incredible thinkers, such as the Harvard grads who designed the German political system after WWII. I just think that college should be an enjoyable, enriching experience, and that in order for it to be so, each student has to find his or her right match... Oy, I've been thinking about this for too long, sorry! sweatdrop

My dad yells about the school giving us homework on the compy, too. Yes, I used to have to ask to get on. There was a password.
Me: Can I get on the computer? I have to do my report for Monday. Him: Why should you have to get on the computer? Schools should not be able to make you use computers. What if you don't have one? What do you then? You can just do it by hand. Me: But it has to be typed. And I need to find information. Him: Too bad. The school can't make you do assignments on the computer. This is probably because you don't have the right last name... (I'm sure that came up at one point. It was always the fault of us not having the right family lineage.)
