My friend asked me to post this, since her mother would go into shock if she looked at my friend's computer history and saw this.

Alright, my friend Mika is considering converting to Islam. She's studied it quite a bit, but there's only so much a textbook or website can tell her. Mika asked me to go on here to get actual muslim's point of view about the religion, since some information in text books can be false. She would especially like to learn about how women are treated or expected to act when following Islam.

I've tried helping her out on this, but every person I go to seem to give me a different response. So, muslims of the religious tolerance guild, please inform us.

I'm not a Muslim, and hopefully some Muslims in this guild will come and help you answer this. But I do know of some websites that may be of help:

http://islam.tc/ask-imam/index.php
This website allows anyone to ask questions to an expert in the religion. He will give you an answer based on what the religion says about it.

http://www.islam.tc/cgi-bin/askimam/cat.pl?c=Women
This is the section about Women in Islam. It might give an idea of how women are expected to behave.

On converting one's beliefs to Islam.

Hope this helps.

Wow, thank you. The second link will take a lot of time to go through, but, I'm sure most of her questions will be answered.

Personally, I would not join Islam because of some of their practices towards women. Keep in mind, I am a feminist so anything but equality isn't going to fly for me. In my opinion, Islam is centered around men. They may have some good teachings but on the whole, men get the better end of the stick. Women are very restricted. Women can't travel without their husband, they have to keep their heads covered at all times, except when they are alone, with only their husband, or only with other women. you basically become the property of your husband, with no real will or rights of your own. Everything has to be approved by your husband. I don't mind the religion or any religion so long as it doesn't infringe upon my rights to live and be happy in the way I choose. I don't know a whole lot about the teachings of Islam, it is simply some of the practices I don't like.

My mom knows Im an Atheist, but it would piss her off if she found out I was an atheistic Satanist. She could go onto my history before and see websites like churchofsatan.com on my history, shes already angry that Im studying it, its because of her that I won't have a copy of the Satanic Bible for a long time. So I feel for your friend, send her my best wishes in her studies. wink

(oh wow, I didn't know I can post here...I am not part of this guild yet but I did request to be accepted so hopefully soon I will be but I didn't know I could post yet LOL)

In theory I am supposed to be muslim but I stopped believing in that religion about 4-5 years ago for my own reasons. But yes, it seems to be an old fashioned religion where the husband is in charge he goes to work and makes the money while the wife stays home and and takes care of the children and cooks and what not. And it does seem that the wife has to ask permission from the husband before she does anything. (I don't know much about Islam, I wasn't raised up religiosly sweatdrop ) Anyways, I believe in indulgence. I want to live my life to the fullest and make the most out of it and I don't want anyone or anything to hold me back from my true potential so that is part of the reason why I disowned Islam. It is however, a very very peaceful religion. It's about peace and love and forgiveness. Anyways I hope you find the info you are looking for mrgreen

I've researched Islam myself for papers and such that I've done on religions and women are treated fair. A lot of Islamic ideas are just misunderstood due to bias ect. People think of Islamic as related to the Taliban because the when the Taliban took over they proclaimed what they did was part of their religion but it was a lie just to justify the horrible things that they did. So yeah I think she should go for it if she has looked into it enough and really believes in their ideas.
