"Japan Fertility Rate Revised Up, Still Low"

Japan's fertility rate for 2005 has been revised slightly upward but remains at a record low, the government said yesterday, reinforcing worries about a shrinking population.
Japan, which has the world's highest proportion of old people and the lowest proportion of young people, has seen its population shrink since peaking in 2004, according to the final censs figures for 2005.
The fertility rate was revised upward to 1.26 from 1.25 based on the census figures, the Health Ministry said.
